Summary: Great wine, though not exactly a winery. More of a Jimmy Buffett style tasting room next to the beach. Location: located in the bottom floor of a building near the beach, this is not a winery. It is a tasting room. And the wine to its credit is very good. The setting though screams Jimmy Buffett more than wine. It's an odd pairing to say the least. Wine: As mentioned, the wine is very good. In fact, almost everything I tried was either very tasty or at least very unique. I left with several bottles and was very happy with the experience overall. We decided to try this wine tasting experience after speaking with the owner earlier in the day. He was such a friendly outgoing guy that it sounded like something we should try. Our wine tasting was led by Jerry, and he was attentive, knowledgeable and personable. Totally enjoyed the experience with him. As to the wines, for the most part, they were not my favorite. I tend to like a fuller bodied wine, however, we both really liked the Alapay Grand Cuvée and purchased 3 of those. We also bought a Tannat and a Petite Sirah. Overall it was a nice experience especially because of the live music on Wednesday night. We bought the charcuterie box for $15 and that was a good addition. Because one of the other reviewers had mentioned a "free" magnet, Jerry made sure we had one of those, too. read more

I had a five star experience at Alapay and felt like we were treated like VIP. My friend has a membership here, so we were lucky to try a tasting of the wines they offer. Scott was our server, and he just so happens to be the owner as well. He was very personable and attentive to our table. I appreciate Scott taking the time to explain each pour and making us feel welcome. I can honestly say that there wasn't one wine that I didn't like, and that's pretty rare! I'm not a wine snob, but I do like a good quality wine. We started with the Alapay Grand Cuvee bubbles. It was a dry, crisp and slightly tart brut style sparkling that I really enjoyed. My second favorite was the 2021 Chardonnay. I don't care for buttery chards, but this one had the perfect balance of acidity and a slight hint of silky butter notes. A very well balanced chardonnay overall. For reds, my favorite was the 2021 Bourbon Barrel Rebekah. It's made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This one has notes of smoke and ripe fruits; followed by soft tanins. The Bourbon Barrel aging of this wine makes this extra special. I really enjoyed this one! We also shared a charcuterie board, which was delicious! It was just enough to tie us over until lunch. The ambiance here is open, airy, and a few steps away from Avila Beach. It had an eclectic vibe and offered some really cute wall clocks, clothing for the wine lovers, cute Christmas decor and much more. Thank goodness Scott didn't try to sell us a time share, because we probably would have walked away with that as well. The tasting was amazing, leaving us with perhaps one or two of the wines that we could do without. This tasting room is a gem, with Scott the owner guiding our morning. His knowledge of the grapes, the pours, and how to sell all of it was perfection. Become a member and the price doesn't change, it remains the same for the life of your membership, with two shipments a year of 6 bottles. Each label has a story, each wine leaves a memory. I walked downstairs and the inside area is just so adorable with all of the wine things. It was REALLY hard fighting the urge to not buy all the things! The wine was actually pretty phenomenal. I'm more of a reds fan, and even though the regular tasting menu had a very large variety (bubbles, whites, reds, desserts), I asked if I can just taste all of the reds, and was easily accommodated. Best decision ever. the limited release reds were so good that I bought 3 bottles off that list! I also fell for the "buy 4 bottles and get 10% off" deal. Hook, line and sinker. Cinsault was delish! Horrible experience here. Was having a very nice day, went on a walk to Fat Cats (3 mile walk round trip), and walked back into town. Was planning to go here for wine tasting and was looking for a table to sit down. As we were looking for a table, this woman named Sandy came up to us and told us we would not be served. We were very confused and asked why and she said it was because we were "too drunk and stumbling around" despite not having anything to drink all day. She was very rude and asked us to leave. We had literally not done anything but walk in and look for a seat. We were in the place for maybe 1 minute when she came up to us. Very, very horrible experience. read more

Whenever I come on down to Avila Beach, my Eliza always takes me here at least one time on my visits to hangout and sip with my sister! The first one we tasted is The Grand Cuvée sparkling! it was light and will absolutely go with any snack or dinner you wish. 2019 Reserve Pinot Noir my next favorite, has a medium body and a nice smooth finish. I was in Avila for my 62 birthday and wanted to go wine tasting with my adult children (25 and 26). While I was in the bathroom, as they were looking for seats, they were asked to leave the winery. How much fun is it to go to a great winery where you get to meet the winemaker of so many remarkable wines is such a great setting of Avilla Beach California? I found this gem while visiting Avila Beach solo for the day while my husband was doing some business up there. I sat down ordered a glass of wine to enjoy the music. I paid the bill asap because I knew my husband could show up at anytime to and it was quite crowded so I didn't want to wait for the bill if I needed to meet him outside. Anyway not too long after that my husband showed up he took a sip of my wine and liked it so I gave it to him and I proceeded to order the rosé. Fast forward she brought the bill again and I didn't even think to look at it, my husband and then we were back at our hotel I realized she charged me for the 1st glass of wine again. a little bummer since the glasses of wine weren't cheap. We LOVED this little tasting room in Avila Beach! We were staying in Pismo but wanted to check out a new area and stumbled upon Avila Beach. It is an adorable little town with great restaurants and cute shops. After lunch, we popped on over to the Alapay tasting room and to our surprise, visited with the winemaker himself! He was so friendly and informative and we just loved meeting him. It made our tasting experience so much more special. They also have adorable gifts and merchandise scattered throughout the shop so we went home with a few "happy camper" wine glasses for our new camper trailer! They are perfect. We loved all of the wines but went home with a bottle of their GSM (a popular grape combination in the area). Absolutely stop in here if you're close by! We will definitely be back. read more

I cannot believe I never rated this winery as I've been a member for a number of years. First off great ambiance and people. Love the owners so friendly and helpful. I usually get their reds, like Zinfandel, Mourvèdre and Pinot Noir. When there is no Covid their pick up parties are fun. Also my favorite Wine dinner was at The Lighthouse.
