I would say that this is the quieter reserve, but then again I probably could also describe it as…read morethe larger one as well. Yet, I'm not entirely convinced that one could consider it a foreshore reserve, especially since there are now a number of apartments located between it and the beach. Yet, it does have some facilities, including restrooms, and it is also next to the marina as well. It is a shame however that they removed the replica ship.

Wigley Reserve at Glenelg must suffer from the most mis-pronounced name of any park or reserve in…read moreAdelaide. I don't know why but many people insist on calling it Wrigley Reserve. There's actually nothing wriggly about it! It was named after H.R. Wigley who was the Resident Magistrate of Adelaide and a resident of Glenelg back in the 1840's. Mis-pronunciations aside, visit Wigley Reserve any morning around 6 in the morning and you'll find the place a hive of activity. It's a favoured venue for 'bootcamp' training aka people who like to be flogged by a trainer early in the mornings. There's a collection of exercise equipment there that gets plenty of use at other times of the day as well. Located at the end of Anzac Highway and on the corner of Adelphi Terrace, the reserve is on the shore of the Patawalonga right near the river's mouth. The Pat as its known by locals can get a bit stinky at times but this doesn't seem to deter the hive of activity that takes place on the reserve. Over the years its been the venue for events like the start of the Walk to Cure Diabetes, Lance Armstrong's Twitter Ride, and a gathering place for car enthusiasts to name but a few. It is after all a big space and is open for hire to all sorts of people for all sorts of community events.

Jimmy Melrose Park refers to a narrow strip of grassed foreshore that stretches from Moseley Square…read moreto Pier Street. The grass is beautifully kept, glossy green, even in the height of summer when other parks go an insipid yellow. It is a nice place to sit or have a picnic as it is a little bit away from Glenelg central and it is beautifully lined by mature Norfolk Pine trees which offer shade when the sun is at certain angles. The only downside of an outside meal or get together here is that most of Glenelg is a dry zone so alcohol is banned. The park itself, is named after a young Australian pioneer aviator who died at a young age. The houses that line the park to the East are an interesting mix of old and new. There are some magnificent beachside mansions, some that have been rennovated and others that have been turned into tawdry seaside apartments. An interesting sight for children and some adults even, is the large shark head outside Seawall apartments that visitors like to use as a photo opportunity. The whole area has been decorated (not all that tastefully) with sea themed knick knacks and objects such as nets and boats, the upside is that the kids love it.

But I'm not in the business of naming things, I'm in the business of reviewing things. And what have I got to say about this so called, 'park'? I brought a little one with me. Not mine - I don't have any. He's my godfather's. And, honestly, I didn't even know he could walk all that well when I brought him. I thought he'd sit idly beside me, eating some grass, whilst I sat down with my Moleskine and got on my reviewer hat. Well, as it turns out, little Gian can walk. Not only can he walk, but he can run. Almost faster than me. Sometimes, as I chased after him down this infernal length of grass, my gut told me the only way I'd catch him is if I leaped on top of him. But, the child not belonging me, I had to keep reminding me how very inappropriate a spear-tackle might be. Then I had to remind myself that even if the kid WAS mine, such a maneuver would be no less... faux pas. So, my lesson? The less grass in a park, the better. A kid often sees the grass as his boundary, and when the grass stretches on forever, be prepared to get your exercise hat on.

I am definitely a fan of this playground but something held me back from giving it five stars…read more Perhaps it was the dated equipment, perhaps it was the lack of equipment designed for the much older children, perhaps it's the lack of shade over the playground, or perhaps it was the long distance to the toilets, I'm not sure but let me tell you what's great about this place. This playground is fully fenced and the entire space has a rubber flooring. There is a drinking fountain, tap, table/chair and BBQ all within close proximity to the playground. Unfortunately there isn't any shelter/shade over the table but with the massive gum trees in the park, there is some shade depending on the time you visit. This is a great place to come but for me, it slightly falls short of my 'destination' playground status. Maybe I'm having a bad day lol. There's PLENTY of space to kick a ball or throw a frisbee outside of the fenced playground area. *Dogs allowed* *Drinking fountain and tap* *Table/chair area (not sheltered)* *BBQ* *Toilets (walking distance)*

Finally! A park with toilets. I think I'd give a park three stars simply for having a toilet, and…read moreeverything else on top of that is a bonus. My kind of park is one that has a great moat of green protecting a toilet right in the middle. Nothing else actually matter. And a drinking fountain too? Benissimo! There's a wide area and plenty of space to play with balls. There's your usual playground. There's a barbecue. And that's about it. But there's nothing more you need. Of course, there could, perhaps, be a little more shade. We're in Australia, after all, not Siberia. But, regardless, this is a nice park. If it's your local park, it's worth being proud of.

There's also a basketball hoop outside of the fenced area but next to the playground. Ideally it would be great to have the BBQ area closer to the playground but it's situated right in the middle of the park, so I guess it works well if you're using the playground or the large oval/space on the other side of the park. There's even a sandpit in the playground area! The equipment is a little dated but it is by no means the oldest playground I've seen. There's shade built into the playground and we all know how much I love that! So let's see, there's a tap, shelter, table/chair area, BBQ, basketball hoop....the only other thing missing are some toilets. Great place to check out if you're nearby! *Dogs allowed (not in fenced playground)* *Tap on site* *Sheltered table/chair area* *Basketball hoop*

I'm so concerned with toilets in parks because of a traumatic experience I had as a child. One I shan't go into here. But one that remains forever at the forefront of my memory. For that reason, I will NEVER accept a parks lack of facilities. NEVER!! The sandpit's great though. Not for making toilet in, mind. Unless you really want to. Or really NEED to. Not that I ever have. Ahem. And aside from that, it's the usual thing, with the usual bonuses (which is better than the usual thing withOUT the usual bonuses, I'll concede).

Famous for…read morebeing the home of the Bay Sheffield athletics carnival, Colley Reserve fills to saturation point every year on Proclamation Day with runners and spectators keen to watch the Bay Sheff. You could be forgiven for thinking that not much else happens here during the rest of the year but head to Colley Reserve early any morning and you'll find large groups of people training, boot camp style. They make me feel guilty every time I see them as I head off for my coffee. Framed on one side by Colley Terrace and its Norfolk Pines and on the other by an apartment building, the reserve is an odd dug out shape with the bulk of the lawned area being much lower than street level. I must say though I loved reading Michelle's recollections of rolling down the sides of the reserve - it brought back some great memories of doing exactly the same thing! Love it.

Which of course I spent many hours as a kid rolling down. My own lkids have rolled down it and I still have friends that take their kids to roll down it. It's just the done thing at the Reserve. You would get dizzy, you could roll too fast and start to go sideways, whatever the roll it was always great fun as a kid and a great laugh to watch as an adult. They do hold a lot of entertainment here like the Sheffield Shield races occur on this oval in the days after Xmas each year. The rotunda is right next to the oval, Wigley Reserve pretty much across the road, the Beachouse not far if you want to spend some money and if not how about just the beach itself, less than a minute from here. Plenty of shops to get anything your heart desires on Jetty Road only a short stroll away. It's a great central location and a nice place to just sit under the trees in the shade and have a bite to eat and lets the kids run around for a bit. And if you haven't tried it before, you definitely have to try rolling down the sides! It's truly iconic at this place.
