This is one of the many Lebanese bakeries in Brunswick/Coburg but I love it because the lady who runs the place is so nice and also the sweets happen to be vegan! So this is the place to come if you're craving something sweet and you're vegan/lactose intolerant -- or if you just avoid dairy and eggs for health reasons or because you care about the environment.
Also a great place to come if you've never had Middle Eastern sweets before and are curious how they taste.
She has a number of different types of sweets on offer, including the standard baklava (Lebanese baklava is sweetened with sugar syrup, not honey, which is great).
It's pretty much the same variety of sweets as at your standard Middle Eastern sweets shops except that she doesn't use ghee in any of them.
For $12 you can get a big box to sample everything -- I recommend doing this because I definitely liked some stuff better than others. Nuts are used quite heavily in Middle Eastern sweets -- pistachios, cashews, etc. so be aware of that if you're allergic or not a fan of some nuts.
My favorite was the kind of "bird's nest" pastry (the white wiry-looking one). So good. read more
