On my recent visit I was seeking something local and wondered if there just be a Greek option around. Well I was pleased to find just the ticket in the heart of Gastonia, in a strip mall, it was  Akropolis Cafe. A charming family-owned eatery that's been delighting locals with authentic Greek cuisine since its establishment in 2014. Located at 3070 E Franklin Blvd, the cafe offers a cozy atmosphere where you can enjoy a variety of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, all made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The history of Akropolis Cafe is rooted in the love for traditional Greek cooking and the desire to share it with the community. The founders, a family of Greek immigrants, brought their treasured family recipes to life in the heart of Gastonia, creating a culinary destination that celebrates the rich flavors and aromas of their homeland. I do love good Greek food, and fresh,  authentic, and local sealed the deal. We'd been vacationing and traveling for over a week so we decided to get some takeout and eat in.  Akropolis Cafe's menu features an array of delectable options, including classic Greek appetizers like hummus, tzatziki, and dolmades. You can also indulge in hearty entrees such as gyros, moussaka, and pastitsio, or opt for lighter fare like the fresh Greek salad or the vegetarian-friendly spinach pie. To satisfy those with a sweet tooth, the cafe offers traditional Greek desserts like baklava and loukoumades.  I was surprised with some of the non-Greek choices like mozzarella sticks, burgers, BLT, Pork Chop platter, fish platter, (tilapia, no thanks) chicken salad but the Pita Pizza looks good.  We settled on Greek Salad, Spinakopita, Tenderloin Shishkabob, Tyropita, pita bread, hummus, tzatziki, Greek rice baklava and fries. I've been eating and cooking Greek food for decades and have had my share of the real deal and these folks at Akropolis Cafe do a very good job and I would definitely eat here again.  Note: I noticed in my search to find this place I saw lots of very positive reviews and saw quite a few complaints that didn't reflect on their food but repeatedly mentioned DoorDash deliveries that were disappointing. FYI Bottom line: Akropolis Cafe is a real gem in the Gastonia dining scene, offering a delightful combination of authentic Greek cuisine, warm hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere. I LOVE their food! I come usually after a workout or after I shop at Five Below. The quality of their food is amazing, the best pizza I've ever had is their Pita Pizzas. Brought my best friend (raised in Greece) here and she said it was closer to authentic than any other around here. Plus my love of Greek cuisine comes from traveling there. The only thing that needs commenting is their hours are not set in stone. Many times they will close early. I wish that they would decide their hours earlier in the day and put a sign out saying when they'll close that day. Or just explicitly state that their hours are not set in stone so customers will be understanding. Best advice, if you are craving food from here after 6-7pm, call in and ask if they are still open! I have been enjoying the food here for nearly 30 years. The owner and his sister are wonderful people, the food is the best greek food in the area, and the portions and price are not outrageous like most restaurants now. The tzadiki is exquisite, the lamb and chicken are my favorite however the pork tenderloin is very good. The salads are fresh and crisp and the food is actually very good for you. I've read a review here that said it was established in 2014, I know that to be wrong because in 1995 my sons and I would come back from the Panthers games at Clemson and drop by to eat. They had started putting one dollar bills on the bar side, and for nearly a decade I could see my sons artwork and they were probably in the first 25 people that did that. Sometimes you get stuck in a rut, you don't want to cook anything but all of the restaurants and take out places don't seem to please you. This little restaurant can save you from that. read more

Went here a week ago. Asked cashier what the gyro meat was seasoned with. She didn't know and didn't offer to find out. Ordered a plate with salad, fries, pita, gyro meat and tzatziki. I honestly hate to leave this restaurant a bad review, I really do. The food is amazing and I doordash this to myself at work several times a month. I got several of my coworkers at the hospital hooked on it too. Since I love the food so much, I have hyped my husband and son up about it , and they love Greek food as much as I do. Today I was so excited to have a Saturday off and be able to take my family to Akropolis to eat. Unfortunately they never go to try the food , and probably never will because i will not set foot back in there ever again. When we got here , there were 3 other couples eating. (One of them was leaving ) . All of the tables with 4 seats were dirty, but no problem-it's small inside , and the only person that seemed to be waiting tables was cleaning a 4 top. There was no indication of whether or not we were to seat ourselves so we grabbed the clean 4 top when it was wiped down. Mind you this has been 5-6 minutes we had to wait and no one has spoken to us. We sit at a table and wait 10-15 more minutes and no one speaks to us. While we are sitting, a table leaves, and another table gets their check. That leaves us, and one other couple who already has their food, in the whole restaurant. When the first mentioned couple leaves, I thought surely the waitress would greet us , get a drink order, say hello, anything. But she walks around us to go clean the table where the couple left. Then walks by us several times without speaking to us . So we decided to leave . I don't know what we did to make the server just completely ignore us but I don't feel like it was deserved and I have never been treated so rudely by a small business. It really was just so blatantly rude that I left in tears , mostly from disappointment. I would love to see Akropolis stay in business for years to come but if this is the kind of employees they have representing them then all I can say is good luck. I would not recommend coming inside. The menu is as amazing as their food. We ordered grilled chicken pitas and the beef loin shish kebab and the meal was incredible. The chicken was grilled to perfection with a nice jar and luxurious flavor. The beef was so tender and juicy. The pitas were warm and soft and made a perfect accompaniment to the meat. Holy moly! I would add a picture, however we ate the food so fast that there was nothing left to take a picture of. This place reminds us of Chicago, we missed Gyros so badly! The food is always hot, and yummy. Our orders have always been early or on time, but most of the time early. They have not made any mistakes so far, and it is a pleasure to do business with them. Trust when I say, any business can have an "off" day, however so far this place has been spot on. We have yet to dine in, we do not do a lot of dining out right now, as I am susceptible to infections, but we will surely give it a try when hopefully things go back to some semblance of order. Came here for a quick lunch, but was not terribly impressed. I had a Gyro (gyro meat on pita bread topped with tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions for $5.25). I was essentially eating a salad wrapped in pita bread. There was a TON of raw lettuce and barely any meat and sauce. It was lacking in flavor, except the meat was pretty good. It does not come with any sides. I also tried the Mozzarella Sticks, served with marinara sauce for $4.25. These were the thinnest mozzarella sticks I have ever seen! And you only get 5 scrawny sticks for that price, which is almost the cost of my meal! It's an unnecessarily expensive appetizer. Tasty, but ridiculously pricey. Furthermore, while I was leaving, I was also not thrilled to see a hornet/bee hanging out on the window INSIDE. read more

For the first time ever I ate at this restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious, I was shocked because I thought it was going to be a culture shock for me but the food was so good that you didn't even realize you were eating something completely different than you're used to. Gyro was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious and the Greek yogurt cucumber stuff that was to dip it in was absolutely delicious. I was very shocked with the french fries because I do not eat those type of food items anymore, but I did have a few and they taste like they were cooked in more of a healthy style than the disgusting style of a restaurant that's more of a fast food chain The salad was good I wish it had more vegetables in it than what it did have in it, I'm more of a vegetable person rather than just lettuce, but the dressing was out of this world I do clothes from 3 o'clock till 5 o'clock so if you choose to have an early dinner you're out of luck, but you can always go before and after the closing times read more

I'm a doordasher and I've visited Akropolis Cafe a few times. I just really want to recognize the all the effort and hard work these people put in every time I'm there. I wish I would've caught the name of the woman who was working, but despite the line out the door she was professional, friendly, and helpful! There is a great, tangy flavor to the dressing and the rice has a great flavor as well. I go here all the time, it's a great restaurant. There are some negative reviews, some of which are valid, but I have only been happy with my many experiences with the restaurant. The food is inexpensive and good (I usually order the super euro or the platter, I think #15 but I could be wrong). The pita bread and tzsaiki are really good. This is probably the best Greek restaurant in the area, in my opinion. It is a little weird that it shares bathrooms with the restaurant next door and you have to go down this windy hallway to get there, and some of the food isn't Greek (I've never had the cheesecake burrito, but it's on my bucket list :)) but all in all I usually have a good experience here. I would definitely recommend you come here if you would like to get a good thirty minute meal for ten bucks. read more

If you're looking for a traditional sit down Greek restaurant with all your favorite Greek dishes this probably isn't the place. They do have pretty good Greek food but it's more like a hole in the wall in a little strip mall and you order your food at the counter. The $5 margarita was big and pretty good. My girlfriend had a Greek salad and she said it was acceptable and I had a PITA pizza and mozzarella sticks which were alright but not what I would normally get if they had saganaki or other Greek appetizers which I was looking to just get a couple good Greek appetizers. Overall not bad if you're looking for a quick bite; it was fine, but, it's not the standard Greek restaurant you're probably used to. Went in early December 2019 to get a takeout menu. The rubber edge of the rug extending from the door to approximately 4 feet into the restaurant entrance rug was warped and stuck up from the floor in a ripple of stretched rubber. On my way out, I tripped and fell really hard. The server who asked if I was ok said that she had turned it around because people were tripping as they came in the door. Ok...this place is usually THE BEST. However, over the last couple years, they've been hit or miss. They change the best food on the menu. First it was the mozzarella sticks. They got rid of the old kind and went to a cheaper version. Bad move cuz the new ones are horrible. Now they've changed the fries. They've also take the best cook and moved him over to la' Fuentes, next door. That place has always sucked so please bring him back to where he is loved. And for god's sake get some waiters that give re-fills, without the customer having to get up and ask for it. Please get back to the place we know and love, so we can come back. read more
