One fine Sunday in Halle, just outside of Brussels, Belgium, my brother and I went to find…read moresomething to eat. For some context of our experience at Loui Sushi Bar, you should know we had had a big night (maybe you'll feel some empathy, probably not)... I disappeared from the bar around a corner to find an ATM and returned an hour later with a gram of cocaine. But within the next hour dear brother Zach knew the mystery drug was indeed not cocaine... As I fell smack bang off the chair, onto the street, and couldn't be roused until the next day. (Cocaine tends to have the opposite effect). My memory ended long before this, but I've been told the rest of the night involved nose bleeds, taxi vomiting, a couple giving Zach €20 for the taxi, and Zach carrying me up four flights of stairs and throwing me onto my bed (and missing the target). So, back to sushi... We wandered around Halle after checking out of our hotel, finding the only thing open in this sleepy town was a little sushi restaurant called "Loui Sushi Bar", they had a €10 meal so we ordered that, along with some tap water for our extreme cotton mouth... Understandably. Obviously we instantly regretted eating raw fish with such an exceptional hang over, so we went to pay our €10, BUT NO, the bill came to €17.60. Well, this was awkward, as neither of us had that much money, not even put together. We explained that we didn't understand a couple glasses of tap water was the same price as feeding a whole family, or a sponsor child for a month, and told them we could only afford to pay the €10. BUT THEN, the manager came out, yelling, "YOU PAY! YOU PAY! YOU EAT YOU PAY!" We explained again, in French and in English, of which he understood both, and he said "I CALL POLICE." We continued to try to calm him down and said we were sorry but we can pay the €10. At this point he got very aggressive, screamed in my face that I was a "f*cking animal" and Zach walked out the front door. The manager went after him. Grabbed him by the collar, and slammed the door shut to lock me inside. The man was quite small, so with me on one side and Zach on the other, no amount of shoving and hitting kept us from getting out. We then walked off calmly, and he followed us, grabbed Zach, tried to hit him, and then came after me, I of course replied "don't you dare touch me.", he continued to follow us.... Taking photos of us... Calling police... For about an hour or more, until two police vans finally stopped. He ran towards them, emotionally and aggressively flailing his arms like a drowning insect, and yelling at the police (good start bro), the police started yelling at him in Dutch, I didn't pick up on much, other than "be quiet" and "focus, look at me". This went on for another hour and we explained our story. The police explained to us that we did not have to pay for the water but as we're not from Belgium it would be too difficult to make a complaint and to just pay for the sushi and let it go, we of course agreed, as we always had.... The police drove us to three different ATMs but none would let me get less than €20 out, so we went back to the restaurant. The manager, still furious, handed the police our bill and ordered them to file a complaint of theft. The police rolled their eyes, spoke some more Dutch I couldn't understand.... And the police told us that they would have to write a dossier as we are "suspects in stealing less than a litre of water". And then for some reason the man left his restaurant... The police waited until he was gone, and said "we're not actually writing this, go home... You got a free meal." Go to Loui sushi for a free meal and a show. 1 star!
