Recently, I ordered an item from AKIRA. They are sweatpants with large grommets. After receiving the article, I was pleased, had them hemmed and washed them prior to wearing them. I never wore them. One of the grommets fell out in the washing machine. The company consistently refuses to send me a new grommet, repair the pants or in the end, exchange the pants. don't deal with this they back up their products if they fall apart, even after one washing. I only gave them one because I could not give them zero stars. read more

I strongly recommend this business! I popped in Akira in hopes of purchasing a specific boot I saw online. To my pleasant surprise my size was available and I was able to use a coupon I forgot I had available. The best part about finding the exact item you're looking for at an affordable price is having an amazing customer service experience. I had the pleasure of being serviced my the sales rep, Bri! Now when I say she was a ray of sunshine, she didn't so too much but she certainly made me feel welcome and unforgotten. If I had more cash on me I would have purchased more things, just by the way she was chatting with me about certain pieces throughout the store. Whenever I'm in Hyde Park stopping at this location is a must! As with the Akita brand some of their items can be pricey, yet they have decent sales too. Today my daughter and I found 6 pieces for around $90. We found joggers and shirts in the sale rack for only $10 each, and their slippers and other accessories were Buy 1, Get 1 50% off. I don't understand the bad reviews because all of the sales people went out of their way to assist. In fact it was quite obvious that they work on commission. Yet I don't mind because they are not pushy! In fact they were helpful with sizes and suggestions. Love this store! read more

Usually there is someone or multiple people there to help you pick out clothes or at least start a dressing room for you. I hurt my knee and this service would've been helpful today. Instead I just get looked at and have to hop my ass around to figure out stuff by myself. I didn't even get a hello. OMG! The music! The music! Awful rap blasting from their speakers...with language I'd rather not hear while trying to shop. Shameful lyrics especially when you have to bring your kids along. They give the N word a whole other meaning desensitizing their customer in a bad way. Management should take note of this. I was allowed into the store without a problem and allowed to shop without a problem. After like 10 minutes I asked a female associate for help and she took me to a male associate who instead of helping me immediately asked if I had a better mask to put on... So I had to then waste time explaining to him about the type of mask I had and how it appears one way but it's actually doing a lot of work and filtering underneath and he finally let me off the hook and walked away. But he didn't help me at all with what I was looking for... I couldn't keep shopping, it made me feel unwanted so I had to leave... very rude & unnecessary experience. There was a worker named Juicy, she was very helpful to me and my family. Everything was going fine until we went to check out, we encountered an employee named Alexis. She was extremely rude and unprofessional. She was ringing us up while mentioning to her coworker that she was "ready to go on break," and that she needed "to roll up and smoke." She was cursing while speaking to us as well, which is VERY unprofessional. I'm surprised as to why she is even an employee there. My family and I tried to uplift her spirits with jokes and laughs, but her attitude was evident and there was no budging it. She ruined our mood and our customer experience. Both Tony and Antoinette were very patient and made me feel valued as a customer! I do agree with other reviewers that prices are higher especially for a student-centered area, however it is possible to budget shop. I bought 4 pieces of jewelry for $30 by using a Groupon and the buy one, get 50% off jewelry sale! I went to Akira in Hyde Park and was Treated as if I came in to Steal.. nobody Said Hello or greeted me with a Smile..I was looking for something sparkly to wear for a Holiday party..as a went over to look at clothes on a rack over on the wall..they literally surrounded me on the Right the Left. And Then a sales lady approach me from the back..I expressed how I felt and continued to shop..I go into the dressing room and now all the salespeople are swarming around the dressing room area..I bought the outfit and got ready to leave the store ..I'm standing outside of the range of the Door Sensor and the alarm starts ringing?? I went to the Hyde Park store to look around at their 1 cents sale. The clerks never fully explained the promotion. I purchased some $25 loafers and I had to found something of lesser value. I brought a tshirt to the counter and it was a NO. I bought some $10 black stretch pants and she said NO because they didn't have a yellow sticker but I decided to buy them anyway. The clerk wrong up the shirt and shoes. Yes, I am in a motorized wheelchair but I am a college graduate with two graduate degrees. Here's what you need to know about Akira: everything in this store represents a good idea taken to an extreme-- sometimes a successful one, sometimes an unfortunate one. Do not come here if you are looking for a sensible outfit. DO come here if you want to look like a tribal pirate space queen who's not sure she really gives a damn anymore. Need a pair of eight-inch heels made of crystal skulls? You will probably find them here. This store is firmly in the middle of the venn diagram of "ridiculous" and "amazing." Even if you are a more conservative UChicago type, give this place a try: you are likely to find some more demure gems among the really wild offerings. The staff are consistently friendly, helpful, and not pushy. Very pleasant to deal with. They also have a great selection of vegan leather jackets... I am rather proud of the collection I am amassing from them. Lots of other nice manmade/non-leather accessories as well. Highly recommended for vegan & vegetarian women looking for out-there accessories. read more

I love this Akira so much! Yeah, everything is really expensive, but it has the biggest sale section out of all the others, and I've bought multiple items for just $5 (crop tops, skirts, even a crochet swimsuit top with a smiley face on each boob!). My style is pretty damn weird, so this place resonates with me (there aren't many plain or professional items here, mostly really bold fashion pieces). The employees here are really awesome too. They're super helpful and nice (I even f4f with one of them on Instagram XD). One of the other reviewers said that the bag check is annoying, but I don't really blame Akira for putting it into action, the security was pretty bad when it first opened (one of my friends had her phone stolen while shopping there). The security guards are nice though! Lastly, even though the prices can be crazy for a girl on a budget, the employees are really good with helping you get the best bang for your buck (so ask!) and Groupon has some good deals too! read more

I recently discovered this AKIRA flag ship store, but try keeping me away. Since mu initial visit I have been back 3 times my first visit was last week!..... The store is clean and organized, not the cluttered, very tasteful displays. Staff are always friendly and willing to help when stuck with the tough question of how many shoes to buy. ;) I wish they had a parking lot, but I went on a Wednesday and a Sunday and was always able to find decent parking. The best thing about this place is the friendly, helpful staff. I dress for black tie events a couple times a year for work, and while this is not the place I'd go to get formalwear, it's been very useful as a place to find affordable but good-looking jewelry to spice up my outfit. Sometimes the selection will be huge, other times not so much, but so far I haven't had to leave without something that looks good at the last minute. Flo remembers details about me and my needs from months ago and always helps me find products that work for me, even when I'm using items in unorthodox ways. I'm not as big a fan of the clothes, partly because the styles can be a bit outrageous for my taste, but mainly because sizing isn't very fine-grained. Many things are small-medium-large and seem to be made for very tall people only. Petite folks like myself will need to have alteration skills or a good tailor. Nevertheless, I bought one of my favorite maxi dresses here. If you're on the shorter side, be prepared to have to hem things yourself. Shoes are also a challenge for the petite - sizes seem to begin at 6, and heels are generally 3-4 inches. That makes the entire section pretty much useless for me. I very much dislike having to check my bag at the front. I end up having to leave valuables with a stranger who may be distracted, or carry a bunch of stuff in my hands or pockets. While the guards have been courteous to me, the policy unfortunately starts the shopping experience off on a rather hostile note. Minor gripe, but the music can be too loud and overwhelming. Overall, 3 stars, but 4 stars for great staff and lifesaver last-minute jewelry. read more

Tried to shop today and the security officer insisted I checked my small (14inch by 10inch) purse in. I refused and the manager approached me very combative. I very gladly offered to have my bag searched, but it is their "policy" to have all bags checked in. I'm not comfortable leaving my purse (that also contains some life saving medicine inside of it) at the front of a store. I also noticed the security officer waking around leaving these bags unsupervised. I was so disappointed in feeling like being treated like a criminal while shopping at was once one of my favorite stores. I was also disappointed in how poorly the manager handled the situation. Way to go Akira! Nice job treating your customers as if they don't belong and making them to feel incredibly uncomfortable. I will do my best to avoid your store in the future due to your unjust "policies." I wish I could rate a zero. read more

It is impossible that a shop IN THE CAMPUS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, you cannot shop with a backpack. It outrageous! I had my expensive laptop for studying and was thinking of buying something for my first day at the university when I was stopped by a man that said I could not shop without checking my bag. My question is; if my computer gets damaged or robbed would they be responsible for it? Cause, it seems that they are very worried about not being robbed by people, but I am pretty sure if something in my bag gone missing they won't be responsible. If I were just rating the store I would give 3.5 stars but because of the staff and customer service they get 1. Now look here,I love a jubilant, sassy,flamboyant sales person calling me boo, telling me what would go cute with my scarf, and getting all up in my business just as much as the next person- not! Yesterday I got rung up for a vest that was left at the counter that I never touched before. When I got home and saw the error the store was closed so I returned the following day to have it fixed. I told them my story eventually the mistake was fixed BUT !!!!! not without the manager going on about how he isn't supposed to be doing this for me and he is putting his job on the line and the only reason he is doing it is because he can't refute my story because he didn't remember this happening (as if I'm probably lying) and he verbatim said "I'm basically putting my job on the line to make you happy" then made a show of having someone come and take a picture of the recipet to have it sent to corporate so he doesnt get in trouble because again he is doing me a huge favor. He had to say that like 5 times . I was confused, he was stating this repeatedly as if I was supposed to do something for him. Like I could give him a blessing for his good deed or I was on the Nobel peace prize panel. It was their fault that it happened because the busy body sales people and dark lights and beyonce playlist made me want to run the bell up out of there so fast I didn't see them ringing me up for things that I never brought to the counter. So glad to be able to buy clothing in Hyde Park now, even if Akira's relentless trendiness requires careful navigation. The sales are great and the salespeople are nice and brimming with styling tips. The shoe section is rather diverse for its size, and there are options for every style tribe (except nautical prepster. ) Be aware that the quality is comparable to Forever 21 and the prices are comparable to Topshop. Also note that men's options are virtually nonexistent. Accessories are sometimes broken right there on the rack. read more

I had THE BEST experience at this store. Thanks to Micah and Flo. They are awesome! I went there to look for an outfit for a wedding and they went above and beyond to help me. While I looked around Micah picked out like 10-15 outfits for me, she brought shoes and accessories too and Flo helped her/me too. So did a few other people who work there. Great style, very clean, and always have sales. The employees are pretty pleasant. My first time in there I was greatly accomodated by a very pretty girl she even got me some cute outfits and invited me back again. Then the next time I went a girl who was awkward and didn't know what to say was helping me. She actually totally forgot about me and another floor employee had to go get her to get me a room for all the clothes I was holding. Then she got me some random outfits to try on that were not party esc so I was confused. Then when I went to pay for my purchases the employees at the register were ok, not really welcoming or too cold just more conversing among themsleves while I checked out. Excellent customer service! I was visiting Chicago for a wedding and planned on buying something to wear once I got out there. While site seeing through Hyde Park I fell upon Akira. Everybody who worked there was so friendly. From the security guard at the entrance, to the sweet girl behind the cash register, all the staff was beyond nice. I was asked what kind of occasion I was purchasing for, and what look I was going for. It was like I had a personal shopper. The girl who helped me brought me multiple dresses, shoes and accessories and kept checking back on me until I was satisfied with everything. Needless to say, I got so many compliments on my outfit. I only wish there was an Akira in Los Angeles. I would definitely come back here again. read more

Came in Saturday for shopping for myself and my daughter. Found lots of great stuff! The stylist are very welcoming and after sitting on the couch waiting on my daughter to finish up I noticed a picture posted on the table and to my surprise I had been working with the employee of the month! She definitely earned that title! Tiana is great! Very fashionable and a quick worker! I have a very difficult daughter and not once did Tiana buckle under pressure. I will definitely come back to see her! Checking out was horrible! I guess I decided to check out during a shift change but that still doesn't explain how rude the cashier was. If you walk in and see a girl at the counter with braces on walk right back out! She double rings you for merchandise? Leave sensor alarms on clothing items, doesn't fold your clothes and after she over charges you for merchandise n u see the receipt, she'll offer u a store credit. Why on earth will I accept a store credit for her mistake?? Once you decline the store ctedit, she'll push you off to another cashier and you'll see the girl in braces leaving out the door. Akira trained their stylist well, now that cashier on the other hand... For her to be at the front of the house, she is beyond rude and needs more training! read more

I still like some of the clothes but they need to lose that window display with the tiger head backpacks. Once you realize what they are--you finally see the straps and tags--they become innocuously stylized and might even look cool on someone. But the window dressing makes it look like 20 severed heads of a beloved endangered species, and it's disgusting and sad. I don't think it's at all intentional; they probably just don't understand how it looks from the outside. Those things should be hung on a rack with all the straps and practical aspects obviously displayed, in a group. Then they'd have a nice retro stuffed toy vibe and not an Anne Boleyn of the big cat tribe vibe. Please, people, some of us have to walk past your store on the way to buy wine. read more

Ok! I went here maybe 3 Weeks ago! I can't believe to tell you how phenomenal this place is! The customer service is PHENOMENAL when I went a guy and the manager I believed were there he took his time assisting me seeing as I was very unsure as to what I wanted! He filled me out got some items and much to my liking I loved every piece. He was very patient and kind. They even allowed me to join in on there conversation before I was bout to check out.
