Stopped in for gas and a snack at Big B's Travel Center in Earlimart, left with a story I can't…read morebelieve. I walked in with my service dog -- calm, controlled, zero issues -- and the woman behind the counter told me I had to leave with her. Then she demanded I carry the dog around the store. Then she asked for my medical documents and a service dog certificate. All of it. .(I am a 100% disabled veteran and my dog is 70lbs) my disabilities would not allow me to do so. Here's what she apparently didn't know: under the ADA, 28 C.F.R. § 36.302(c)(6), a business can ask exactly two questions -- is this a service animal required because of a disability, and what work or task has it been trained to perform. That's it. The same regulation explicitly says a public accommodation shall not require documentation, such as proof the animal has been certified, trained, or licensed. Demanding medical records or a certificate is a direct violation. 28 C.F.R. § 36.302(c)(1) and (c)(2) require businesses to allow service animals in public areas and only permit removal if the dog is out of control or not housebroken. Telling me to carry the dog and leave violated those rules. California law backs this up too. Civil Code § 54.1(a) guarantees full and equal access for people with disabilities. Civil Code § 51 (Unruh Civil Rights Act) prohibits this kind of discrimination by any business, and an ADA violation is also an Unruh violation under § 51(f). Damages are available under Civil Code § 54.3 (minimum $1,000) or § 52 (minimum $4,000). I told her I'd be reporting her, and everyone involved and I meant it. I will be filing with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and California's Civil Rights Department. If you've got a disability and a service dog, think twice before stopping at Big B's Travel Center -- they'll make you feel like a criminal for existing. If you don't, maybe just don't work the counter at a place that serves the public. The workers there were extremely disrespectful and threatened to call the police on me. I would have loved to stick around for it but I had to get a move on with my 11 hour drive with 2 small children and find another station who would accommodate my animal.

Gas War - We have the lowest gas prices

A quick right turn into a Chevron station seemed like the best bet for a restroom. The mini mart's facilities were operable and satisfactory, and we bought a few snacks in tribute to the hospitality. However, and that's a BIG however, the gas prices were astronomical for freeway-adjacent gas early last July. Visible across the street from the Chevron was a commonplace station by the name of Gas War. As the only war in which I have ever actively participated, Gas War's price display showed regular at $3.09.9 a gallon, cash or credit, so my enlistment was an easy choice. It might not be top-brass gas, but the Prius in use neither requires nor merits it. The adjacent mini mart is named S.A. Market, which is printed on gas sales receipts. Earlimart's Gas War is one of this practically anonymous Central Valley chain's lesser-known outposts, discovered unaided by reconnaissance. Praise the Lord and press the ignition.

Compared to almost all other gas stations, Arco leads the way with low prices…read more It almost doesn't matter how well-kept the particular location actually is...the gas is the same. This Arco one is surrounded by a questionable neighborhood, but it was right off of the freeway...so convenience won out over fear for my life. Once you are actually on the Arco property, you'll notice that things are fairly well kept up. Either that, or this is a newer location and things look that way because...well, because they are new. The size of the store itself was bigger and had more variety than many locations I've been to. The area outside near the gas pumps was nice and wide so larger vehicles can maneuver around without any issues. The bathroom didn't stink! That's monumental for any gas station! I don't know if I'll ever witness with my own eyes an honest-to-goodness "5-Star" Arco, but this one came pretty close.
