I had dinner here last night, and have been a couple of times in previous years. It is one of the best restaurants in Blackpool and, as the earlier reviewer says, in a sea of burgers and pies it offers a great menu and an escape from the grim streets (with apologies to Blackpool residents) into a relaxing and pleasant place for dinner, The dishes are modern takes on standard english/european/US classics. The portions are generous and the dishes are well designed, We had a lovely starter with home made humus and other delicious dips, served with pitta bread. Compared to the last time I was here the service was a little slow, although as ever in Blackpool very friendly. Because of a delay with the main course they gave us a free portion of home made Italian bread and garlic olive oil for dipping, which was most tasty. The wine list is not at all bad and not expensive by usual standards - we had a great Chablis.
My main course was only a bit of an issue because I ordered fish pie and what I got was basically a seafood pie. I love my fish but I am not a seafood eater and do not do suckers and tentacles, even little ones, so I was a little disappointed and had to swap with my kind colleague. That little slip and the slow service apart, AJ's is a great place and you can confidently take a business contact there or indeed have a great romantic or fun night out. read more
