We drove from our Airbnb, which was only about 10 minutes away from the Bungy site. Since Queenstown is the birthplace of bungy jumping, we felt we had to check it out. When we arrived, there was some construction happening under the bridge. One of the staff members explained that because it's shoulder season and due to the construction at the bottom, they're currently able to accommodate about 30-40 jumpers per day. When the area is clear and they can use the rescue boat instead of pulling jumpers back up, they typically handle 80-100 people a day.
It had just started to rain, so we decided not to jump, but we did stay to watch a few others likely teenagers, take the leap. The staff were thorough with the safety checks, securing harnesses and walking them through the process. And then, just like that, they jumped. The whole experience from stepping off the platform to being retrieved seemed to be only about 10-20 seconds.
Even as spectators, it was exciting to watch, and the canyon itself is stunning. You can walk across the bridge for different viewpoints, but we stayed on one side to watch the jumps. It was definitely a fun stop, and a great way to take in some of Queenstown's adventurous spirit. read more
