Each year during the summer months, rue Sainte-Catherine between rue Berri and rue Papineau turns into a pedestrian walkway where you can leisurely stroll the shops, eat/drink/chat on the restaurant patios, and take in the nearly daily events that take place.
As a big proponent of anything that makes cities more pedestrian friendly, I really like this concept! Its nice to be able to walk without having to worry that a driver isn't going to see you and you can worry instead about which shop you're going to stop into next.
I did see several stores with signs up that they were closing because of the effect that Aires Libres was having on their business. Whilst I couldn't find anything online as to why this might be, I'm curious as to why some shopkeepers do not like it. I would think that this would bring them more foot traffic but I would be interested if anyone knows otherwise. read more
