American purple gallinule
Terri H.

Captain Pete was our guy! He was such a wealth of knowledge. He has been doing this for fifteen years and knows the places to go to see alligators and birds! The American purple gallinule is a sight to see!

"We did the private tour and it was our first time to go on an airboat since we leave in Souther California , we wanted to experience what we don't have back home. We wanted to see gators in the wild and up close but not too personal, 6 feet or more will suffice. It was great experience will definitely go again and will recommend it! "

Oh myyy what an absolute BLAST this was! Capt Pete was such a hoot - kept us laughing the whole time and taught us a lot - his love for the nature of the Everglades shines through!! And we saw so many gators too - Capt Pete was like a Gator Whisperer haha! They were running a February special so we booked a private 1 1/2 hour tour as a birthday treat and it was soooo worth it! I really came away feeling like I saw a good bit of the River of Grass and all it's natural glory! During our whizzing and whipping through the little canals in the grass, we made numerous stops to see wildlife and listen to Capt Pete tell us about the nature surrounding us - so fascinating! Did you know those raised notches on a gator's back are actually bones?? I didn't!! Capt Pete even had some of the bones to show us! Booking online with them was easy and secure. We had zero issues. I had even previously emailed them with some questions while I was shopping around for the best tour company and they were very quick to respond, thorough, and friendly! The main reason I went with this company - apart from all the glowing reviews of course lol - is that they are very eco-friendly and concerned with preserving the Everglades as much as possible - they're very careful with their boats and super considerate of all the wildlife - and they don't even have one of those sad, gimmicky "animal attraction" parks like all the others where they make the animals perform - so that sold it for me. Heck they don't even have a store front haha! They have you meet up with the Captain at a Shell gas station nearby - very easy to find so no worries. Then you follow the Captain to the boat launch and off you go! Their "desk" at the Shell station is a tad hard to find - it's a tiny wooden makeshift desk right outside of the door - but it wasn't an issue bc Capt Pete found us right away! He gave us time to use the restroom and get any coffee or drinks/snacks before leaving too, which was nice. At the boat launch, there's ample parking off to the side on the gravel/grass area as well.

Informative, great experience, we went on a Thursday, no reservations required, we were able to get tickets and sit in our own row. We did have to wait a bit, but you can walk around & check out the other reptiles. Fun afternoon.

We had a great time today on our airboat ride. It was a one hour ride and we had fun. We were able to see gators with babies and lots of birds. We even got splashed when two male gators decided to fight. We'll be larger one did win. Really cool!! Our guide was Captain Greg. He was very knowledgeable on the area. I would highly recommend this tour group. Not sure of price differences between groups but we truly enjoyed the ride. The check in process was easy with clear direction on where we would be going and where we would be parkin

Ask the Community - Airboat In Everglades

Is this a fun ride? Does it go fast?

Yes it is fun for everyone. I didn't think it went that fast. I asked the driver and he said his boat tops out at 40mph but he typically keeps it at 25mph max for safety reasons. There are other boats out there that travel the same paths.

They are passionate about the Everglades, preserving it, and really love what they're doing. For about hour, we zipped and stopped around the park, through channels in between the high saw grass, over grassy flats, and within a few canals dredged many years ago. The fresh air felt great and I think maybe my blood pressure eased for a few moments. We saw wildlife, including a peregrine falcon, other birds and of course, many alligators, either resting on the grass or swimming off to do whatever it is they do. The guides I think know pretty much where to find the alligators, some of which have names. River of Grass is one of the first swamp tours west of Miami off of highway 41 past the casino. The boats take you pretty far into the Everglades where you don't see or hear any civilization, only the quiet rustle of the grass, i.e. when the engines are not powering the boat thru the glades (why can't they make a quieter engine?). The pictures I took really don't do it justice.

We came out on 12/26 with the family to explore the Everglades, and let me tell you--it was an experience. First, you get an email with coordinates of where to meet. Pro tip: do not use Waze unless you enjoy being abandoned on the side of the freeway like a confused extra in a nature documentary. The coordinates lead you to a couple of unmarked pickup trucks and a few guys casually hanging out at the edge of the Everglades. No restrooms, no gift shops, no docks, no parking lots, no snacks. If nature calls, well... be prepared to answer it off the side of the airboat. Our boat guide was super prompt and helped us climb aboard. I was a little surprised there were no seatbelts or life jackets, but apparently when the water is only 18 inches deep. Our guide stopped every 20 minutes or so to talk about wildlife or check in with us. While the motor is running, you can't hear a thing, but they do give you earmuffs to help dampen the noise. We saw all kinds of birds and more than two dozen alligators during our 1.5‑hour expedition. The weather was a perfect 72 degrees with zero humidity, and the boat glides so smoothly it feels like you're floating on butter. Highly recommend this company and the whole experience. It's wild and absolutely worth it.

The airboat tour was definitely the highlight. Our tour guide (I wish I could remember his name!) was so fun, engaging, and informative. He answered all of our questions and made the whole experience feel exciting and memorable. I'm from Las Vegas, so getting to see live alligators and be out in nature like that was really special. I was honestly expecting way more bugs, but it wasn't bad at all--I barely got bitten! They also have a cute little gift shop if you want to grab souvenirs. Overall, this was a 10/10 experience and something I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area!

This time, I'm sorry to say it was a waste of time and money. There were 5 of us and we paid ahead of time 130.99 on Groupon for our tickets, along with an additional 8.00 a person National park fee once we got there! Along with a child. The first time we went, there was an exhibit where you could pet a baby alligator and ask any questions you had about them. This time there was nothing. This time we got on the airboat ride and it wasn't until we were headed back that an alligator was spotted! Of course we were not told beforehand that it was mating season and spotting gators was not as likely to happen. Had I known that, or been warned I would have reconsidered. I was on the other side of the boat of course so Even standing, I barely got a glimpse of the gator before he went under. We got back to the doc and that was it. I felt like I had paid almost 200 for an experience that was very different from our first trip. I contacted the company and talked with the assistant manager Mary Anne, and told her of my disappointment and she didn't seem to care. They didn't offer any sort of compensation, and the customer service was more of a "suck it up"- experience. I contacted Groupon and they said it was something that had to be worked out with the merchant. A few years ago I would have highly recommended this experience! Now, not so much. It's was overpriced and not guaranteed or cared about if you see anything.
