Our Two Entrances: South Tract,also known as the Dan Ashe Division, hosts 5 miles of walking trails and two scenic lakes. It is also the site of The Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. - closed on federal holidays.  The grounds are open sunrise to sunset every day.  Fishing and hunting is available seasonally.  North Tract offers 25 miles of trail for walking, biking, and horseback riding. With less visitation than South Tract, North Tract offers a quiet atmosphere for those seeking solitude. The grounds and Visitor Information Station are open from Thursdays through Sundays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.  In addition, extended hours will be offered on the third Thursday of every month. Third Thursday hours will be the following: April 18 - 8:00 am to sunset.  May 16, June 20, and July 18 - 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. August 15 and September 19 - 8:00 am to sunset. Very cool visitor center with beautiful displays about different species to include Gray Wolves…read more Whooping Cranes etc. There is also a viewing area of lakes from the visitor center near the displays with clear viewing of wildlife. Very friendly staff with a gift shop, nice restrooms and information on area. The refuge has hiking trails which provide different opportunities to see wildlife from waterfowl to birds. What she told me was patently untrue based on the information about the centers posted right on their website. I will follow up with whomever they are accountable to, if anyone. I'm so sick of government agencies, NSA or not, not treating American Citizens (who pay their high salaries) as customers, instead of bothersome people wasting their bureacratic time. They don't get it, nor understand where they fall in the pecking order of things. We The People are their bosses. In order to get someone to talk to me I had to call The White House switchboard and have them transfer me through. The lady that had hung up on me 3 times before now answered in just 2 rings instead of 45, but when asked to speak with her supervisor, claimed she didn't have one. No accountability equals the poor customer service I received. Instead, not allowing me to speak to consumer affairs, she transferred me to an equally rude person in security who would not identify herself either, who also refused to answer my simple question, or tranfer me to public affairs. Similar to Medieval times, although the food is not as bad still not good. You have to relinquish all of your personal items, shoes, jewelery, etcetera. Weird concept but I'm open to new dining experiences. Seating is also a little odd. Their "booths" are more like small rooms with steel doors and locks. Also the "booth" has a sink and toilet in it. I'm guessing that's how they do it in France but it really didn't improve the ambiance. Service was an absolute nightmare. You think that after taking your picture and fingerprints it would lead to a more personal dining experience. WRONG. I sat in my "booth" for like 2hrs before even seeing anyone. When I did, did she take my drink order? No. She asked if I needed to make a phone call. WTF? If making phone calls is so important to the restaurant then why did you take my cell phone? You think I actually remember phone numbers? I know like a billion people. Not even Stephen Hawking on that pill that gives you the ability to use your whole brain could memorize that many numbers. I digress... I declined the use of a phone, and politely asked for an ice tea and perhaps a wine list. Now I have to emphasize that I did in fact ask politely because for some reason she said I was being a " Smart Ass" and freaking tazed me. When was the last time you were tazed for asking for a wine list? Well only if you've eaten at that Friday's in Baltimore, but I surely did not expect it at a "fine" dining establishment. When I came to and wiped the drool from my face I noticed my food was waiting for me. Having not seen a menu I guess it is a Chefs selection type deal. Well this "chef" must have recently gone through a horrible divorce as the selection was appalling. Hot dog, little carrots and a box of milk. Not having my watch I am unsure how long I was passed out but everything was cold except the milk. The bun was uninspired and tasted like paste. I am not sure what animal ass they used to make the hot dog but I think it was actual dog. VERY gamy and chewy as was the milk. Good thing the toilet was there because I gave the meal right back. Now the bill... You can't simply ask for your tab and leave. Oh no. You have to have a chat with a bitter old person they simply call "The commissioner" . I never thought we would have to review the history of my life and careers to give me the freaking bill for the meal. She was all double homicide this, racketeering that and really I just wanted to get out of there. Total bill? $25,000.00 No I didn't have a seizure on my number pad you read it right. Twenty Five Thousand Dollars. "We take credit cards with a nominal fee but no discover or amex" she tells me. Really? Well let me tell you Visa is not keen on raising your limit for this particular restaurant. Denied. Well that's not a problem because they have hundreds of numbers of people that will pay your bill for a 10% sir-charge. Thank goodness. I spoke with a Mr. Tiny set it up and within a couple hours I was finally allowed to leave the restaurant. Second worst meal ever. If you read this far I would suggest avoiding this place at all costs. If you are bored with the same ol dining experience, i would suggest a picnic instead. Unless you like your meals with a side of S&M you will not like it.
