Let me start by saying this is one of my favorite places in Tampere, so if you're visiting Finland,…read moreplease do yourself a favor and go. This was our weekly hotspot while we lived in Tampere. Jack the Rooster is a Rock bar which has live music most days of the week. On Sundays (Jam Night) they have a house band which offers a really unique experience. You get the opportunity to request the songs that the band plays, but you also get to be part of the band. For example, you can request a song and then replace the singer for the song you chose. This is really cool because you can replace as many or as few members of the band as you'd like. It's like kareoke for all musicians! You play drums, no problem, replace the drummer. You sing and your buddy place bass, cool, replace the bass player and the singer. It's really a cool idea and always a blast to watch. The musicians in the house band are extremely talented and there aren't many songs they can't nail. There is also a karaoke room in the bar, so no matter what else is going on, you can sing some karaoke any night! Go on a weeknight and you might even get the room to yourself for you and your friends. Now on to the food. The food is great, the burgers are amazing, but they've also got some unique things happening in this area too! First, the death burger. This is a food challenge, so you have to consume the entire burger on 30 mins without drinking any milk. This burger has about half a bottle of Ahjo hot sauce in the burger and even more on top, and trust me, that stuff is HOT! In addition, you have to finish the fries which are sprinkled with naga chili spice. Jack the Rooster also hosts a special dinner night called Hell's night twice yearly which features an original recipe spiced up menu. You can pick your item based on the skull rating, 2 skulls is moderate and 5 skulls will have you on fire. I had the Russian roulette. This meal was 5 meatballs with mashed potatoes... but here's the catch, only on of those meatballs was a 5 skull naga chili meatball. I hit that meatball second and it was so hot I felt like I was on drugs. I had to down pints of milk to bring me back to reality. :) On Monday nights in the summer they host a really cool event, Reggaeta & Makkaraa (Reggae and Sausage). They have live reggae music and free sausages fresh from teh grill! Yes, that's right, free! Might I add, this terrace gets sun alllll day and allll evening. Finnish summer days are long, it barely gets dark before it gets light again.

I've visited Sitko twice; once when it had just opened in 2014 and once in May 2015. I've got to…read moresay there was a huge difference between these two experiences. And with the latter, the experience definitely improved. In 2014 they started with a very limited menu, a restaurant space that was too loud and with pizzas that heavily divided opinions. My pizza in 2014 was such that I honestly thought it was the worst pizza I'd had in a real restaurant. It was burned, toppings were so scarce that the crust bubbled and also the taste was just foul (have to admit I'd never eaten anjovis pizza before). After hearing much more positive reviews from colleagues, I decided to give Sitko another go and it was a good choice. The menu has expanded a bit and now had multiple pizzas I could have chosen from. Also the decor had improved so that the space didn't feel as loud anymore. They even had a DJ playing music now. On a Saturday evening the place was just as busy as it was after opening so they've maintained a good buzz and apparently improved the quality, winning long term fans. I went with the Vege pizza with eggplant, goat cheese, pistachio pesto, balsamico and pine nuts. The crust was thicker than on our previous visit and there were in general "a lot more to eat". I liked the tastes otherwise but balsamico combined with goat cheese on a pizza tasted a bit too sweet for me. I still definitely enjoyed the experience and I'm planning to come back to try the Quattro Formaggio and maybe the salmon pizza as well. The pizzas here are very different from pizzas anywhere else in town so I'm sure some like them, some don't. But I recommend trying the restaurant now and enjoying the "different kind of pizza"-experience as they've really tried to built unique tastes into the pizza.
