I reached out to ALM for a quote after deciding to replace my current lawn care provider. The previous company had been sold, and the new ownership wasn't delivering the same level of service. I had heard mixed reviews about ALM but wanted to give them a fair chance. As part of my inquiry, I asked whether they actually perform soil analysis--something I've paid for with other companies before but never saw any difference. Instead of receiving a clear and professional answer, I was met with sarcasm and hostility. The response included: "Do we actually take a soil sample? Bought into what? You think we're lying? You think that's part of our business motto, to lie to customers to gain an additional $35? Wow. What a way to start the day... ALM is not going to be the lawn care company for you." This kind of response confirmed what some of my neighbors had warned me about--ALM's poor customer service and attitude when questioned. It felt like they had a "we're so big, we don't need your business" mindset. Just because you're a large company with customers across Virginia and North Carolina doesn't mean it's okay to dismiss or disrespect someone who's asking a reasonable question. One lost customer might not matter to you--but that kind of arrogance says a lot about your company culture. To be fair, someone later followed up with a more respectful message and an apology, which I appreciated. But first impressions count, and this one left a bad taste. If you value respectful, honest communication, I recommend proceeding cautiously. No company should be too big to treat a potential customer with courtesy. read more

ALM saved my lawn! Early last summer, my neighbor and I had discovered a sand spur rapidly spreading over our yards. It had tiny brown triangles that you could barely see until they were embedded in your shoes or worse, feet. My two year old and my neighbor's dog experienced the worst of it. We looked into some available lawn treatment companies. Google only pulled up the large, national companies. They deal with lawns from regions all around the country, they aren't locally based, experts that actually know the local soil. Fortunately, my neighbor's dad informed him of a just that. We both contacted Agronomic Lawn Management. They have a great year-around program. When you sign up, they place you right into their continuing program. Well, I had spurs to one side of the driveway; I dug up most of the lawn to the other side of the driveway grinding out tree roots and a stump from a fallen tree; and the backyard was covered in various weeds. My lawn was a mess. Our zip code rep for ALM, Daniel, reached out via text to inform me he'd be by later that week to inspect my lawn and spot treat the worst of the spurred areas. Then the following week, he'd come back to perform the month's planned treatment. After a few months, my family was back to walking barefoot in the lawn. The spurs were gone. Then ALM informed me that it was the time of year to buy the slit seeding option, if we wanted it. I was caught off-guard as I thought that was included in the year-around program I already purchased. So that bit was a little upsetting. I think that is my only complaint I have about everything they've done for me. I wish that was made clearer in the beginning. But I knew I needed the slit seeding. Another unforeseen cost of repairing my lawn I hadn't planned on in the beginning was buying some sprinklers. ALM did inform me that the results of the seeding rely completely on watering the lawn effectively. So I bought some tandem sprinklers with timers that I only had to move once a day for 2 months. It wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking it'd be. Anyways, back to ALM's service. When that grass started coming in, and it did very shortly after the seeding, It was beautiful. Nice, bright green, soft underfoot, and complete coverage all across my property. The soil I packed into the stump hole and root ruts disappeared under fresh grass. Same for the low points around the lawn I had packed with soil. The spurs were completely gone. My backyard has no weeds, just healthy grass. They did it. It took ALM less than a year to fix my lawn. I am completely satisfied. Overall, the cost of the program was very affordable. Both my neighbor's lawn and mine were repaired better than we hoped for. ALM's customer service was friendly and very easy to work with. Their website is user friendly. Our zip code rep, Daniel, was great. He kept me informed of every upcoming service for my property and provided a report following every treatment providing what had been done, his personal observations of how the lawn was faring, and his recommendations on watering more or less, adjusting the height to be mowing properly during whichever phase of growth the lawn was in, etc. It was a very straight forward and professional. I submitted an online request for an estimate. Unfortunately it was not handled until almost two weeks later. To me this is an unacceptable way to conduct business. My contact was through email by a woman named Emily who apologized for the long delay and was setting me up the next week. I replied that with such a long wait the job had been given to someone else. I've actually heard good word of mouth about them and understand this is a busy part of the season. ALM advertises like crazy on AM radio which brings in a lot of business that they cannot handle evidently. After reading their reviews I'm not so sure that it didn't work out for the best. I was looking forward to giving them a chance. There loss, not mine as they obviously have more business than they can handle. read more

We have had their service for many years and they used to be the absolute best. The last two years they started skipping my prepaid services and when I would email Ms. Hackett to inquire she would make excuse after excuse and the service never has improved. I am lucky if they come 4 of the 7 times I pay for per year. Weeds are coming back so unfortunately its time for a new provider. read more

I hired ALM for lawn/shrub care in September 2022. The gumpo azaleas in the front yard were healthy before ALM started caring for the yard. By December they were starting to turn brown in several large areas. I contacted the company several times about this but the shrubs got worse instead of better. Finally, I asked to have a manager come out and look at them. On March 23, 2023 Craig Ziegler came out, looked at the azaleas and said the dieback was not due to their treatment or lack there of. I showed him a picture of the plants taken in July when they were healthy. Mr Ziegler became hostile, saying "I know where this is going!", said he was canceling our contract then drove away. I have posted before and after photos. Extremely poor customer service. I would never recommend this company to anyone. read more

We hired ALM to improve front yard with fertilization and weed control and completely reseed back yard. The reseeding process was over $600 and was an absolute disaster every step of the process. Round up: they over sprayed round up to kill the existing grass 2 times Seeding: they don't aerate- or even/improve the soil - but move as quickly as possible to thatch and then seed We watered 2x a day for 10 days - 50 minutes at a time and then 1x a day for a week after. We are 6 1/2 weeks out from seeding and there are many more weeds than grass and bare patches of dirt with no grass growing in majority of yard. After $600 the yard looks so much worse than what it did originally. ALM came out and said we should expect weeds and we must not have watered enough! Just canceled the contract with them. read more

The year before, I had this company perform Magic on the front yard. This past year, I had them come out to do the back yard. Same Excellent results. They killed all the bad stuff, replanted real grass not weeds and I have the best looking yards front and back in the neighborhood. read more

Hired ALM last year to help with issues of some nutsedge and poor grass growth in back yard. Decided to give them a complete year with seeding, so we bought into their seeding, soil analyze, and PGM program to deal with nutsedge. After a year of their dedicated service, the total back yard was completely dead by August of this year. Service was inconsistent, they rarely called to make appt for service, they hit my truck with their equipment (did pay for repair), they switched our plan in the middle of the year without consulting us, their iadvice for lawn mgmt was bogus and inconsistent ranging from : Need to starve and make your yard thirsty so water less - to its hotter you need to water more. We got nothing about the results of their "soil analyze", and their seed was not superior to anything you would buy at home depot. read more

We've been using ALM for almost one year now, and our yard is the best it's ever looked! In the past, I've only been able to keep our yard looking pretty good until August, and then the summer heat and diseases would start to take their toll on our fescue grass. However this year, thanks to Brian (our lawn tech), our yard is green and weed free! I originally signed up for the PGA program, but after noticing signs of brown patch on our fescue in mid June, I upgraded to the Masters program. If you have a fescue lawn and want to keep it looking nice all year, then spend the extra money for the Masters program. You won't regret it! I have to say I have had nothing but fantastic results since ALM took over. For years I maintained the yard myself using and following the Scotts program. All was good until clover took over my back yard. Nothing I applied would even touch it and the clover continued to spread. We contacted ALM and it was the best decision for me. Our technician, Tim Hartman, knows his stuff. I went with the Master's Program and have zero regrets. All I have to do is maintain the watering (Tim tells me what to do here as well) and mow the yard. That being said, be prepared to cut grass twice a week to keep it manageable but that is a small price to pay for such a beautiful yard. The grass looks so nice that visitors and delivery drivers rarely walk across the grass to get to my front door, choosing to use the sidewalk instead. I tell them all the time, you're not going to hurt it, walk across the grass. If you want a gorgeous lawn, you owe it to yourself to call ALM. read more

I had heard good reports on ALM in the Tidewater area of Virginia, but always thought this type of service would be too expensive. I had talked to several other companies who do lawn management, but none really seemed to make me want to do a contract. Along came a young man named Connor Wallace from ALM and the whole picture changed. He walked me through every step of what he analyzed as my need. He pulled up weeds and evaluated them. He did core samples of the soil. He determined what grasses I now have. After doing this he came in and sat down and methodically explained what ALM could do for me. (no one had done that before). By the time we finished our time together I was sold. I signed a full year contract and within a couple of days the first application was applied. If it were not for Mr. Wallace, I would still be looking for a service provider. read more

I had a bad experience with Agronomic Lawn Management of Virginia Beach and would not recommend this company. My husband and I had mostly done our own seeding and fertilizing over our 34 years of owning this home--with periodic one or two year contracts with lawn care companies. The two companies we had used did a pretty good job, although the lawn would re-grow some weeds soon after a service contract ran out. With or without a lawn company, our lawn always looked at least average --and sometimes much better than average. My husband developed some cardiac issues, and I decided that we again could use some help with lawn maintenance. I had heard ALM advertisements and infomercials on the radio. ALM presented itself as a company that used a scientific approach to lawn management. (They require lawn soil testing at the start of the program, claim education in this field so they can pick the right treatments, etc). ALM of Virginia Beach's advertisements stated that they grow relationships--as well as lawns. (They did not state whether these were good relationships!) Since there had been some increased encroachment of weeds over the years, we followed their advice of having them kill much of the lawn, and we paid for this treatment and their reseeding program (not cheap.) We conscientiously watered the new lawn according to their instructions. We purchased our own seeds to fill in spots ALM missed --and we had a nice lawn. We paid ALM for over a year of lawn maintenance. Right after one of ALM's lawn treatments, our lawn began to die. My husband, some neighbors, and my lawn cutting service company confirmed that it looked like chemical burn. I called the company right away. Without seeing the lawn, they theorized that it could be a brown fungus. The lawn looked the worst it had ever looked in the 34 years we lived in this house and a number of my neighbors (more than 6) stopped by to comment on the lawn. Although I had called ALM right away, I did not set up an immediate appointment due to family and friend's medical issues and due to having houseguests. When ALM did send out one of their employees a few weeks later, he stated that it could be due to brown mold or fungus common in this area. He mentioned that they could do a brown fungus treatment for an additional charge of approx $55. I stated I did not agree that the problem was a non-related fungus for the following reasons: a. the grass started dying immediately after the last treatment b. I have a contiguous lawn with a neighbor and there was a straight line where ALM had stopped fertilizing/ weed treatment, and that delineated my dead grass from my neighbor's live lawn c. the damage was worst in sunny areas. If it were due to mold, the areas that were shaded and damp would be worse; these areas were better. d. I had never had a problem with mold or fungus in all the 34 years that I lived here e. No neighbor in my vicinity had anything close to our dead grass problem. In fact, I saw no lawn in my neighborhood--with or without lawn maintenance contracts-- which had any substantial areas of newly dead grass The employee stated the treatment could have made some contribution to the conditions which caused the lawn to die (acidity?), and suggested I set up an appointment with one of the ALM managers. I did call right after this visit, but my message got mislaid so I called again. I made an appointment with Brian. By this time, most of my grass was dead. Brian said that the treatment had nothing to do with the condition of my lawn and it was coincidental that the lawn had died from a fungus. As previously stated, there was a straight line where they had stopped fertilizing and on the other side of that line, the grass was alive. He said that the reason my neighbors' lawn was not dead was that they likely had a different grass. In fact, ALM that picked my seed grass, so if there was a problem of the type of seed used, it should be their responsibility. Anyway, ALM had accidentally treated into my neighbor's yard by a few feet. Those few feet of lawn were also dead--minimizing the chances that the difference in our lawns was due to a different type of grass seed. ALM had picked the grass seed, had picked the chemicals, and had done all the spraying. Since ALM claimed to approach lawn management scientifically, ALM's refusal to do any restorative maintenance (i.e. reseeding, soil treatment, acidity remediation, etc) to treat our disastrous lawn was unfair. We had paid over $700 to have the worst lawn we have ever had! Shortly after the lawn died, violet grass sprung up all over my lawn. It has taken hours of toil for my husband and me to clear space to put down new grass seed. Ironically I had chosen to employ this company due to my husband's health issues. Their poor attitude and treatment of our lawn has caused us much aggravation. I call this company "Aggravation Lawn Management." read more

I had decided not to send this review I wrote last year after ALM serviced my lawn last spring, but after hearing the many commercials and the on-air personalities sing their phrases in recent weeks, I decided I needed to add my experience. My experience was disappointing to say the least. I hired ALM to take my Zoysia lawn to the next level. They took it to the next level, sadly, in the wrong direction! Listening to all the hype on the radio, I had high hopes they knew what they were doing with a summer grass since they were supposed to be VA Tech certified. I was concerned with the program proposed of the multiple applications since the applications were above and beyond what the sod installer had stated was needed for this type grass. I should have listened to my instinct at the point of the estimate, but I thought these guys should know what they are doing since they go through the VA Tech program! Over the years I have found that sometimes less is better in the case of adding chemicals to lawns even with fescue. The previous Spring, the Spring after install, I used one light application of Scott's for Summer Grasses. The Fall before I hired ALM I used a sparse application of Scott's Fall blend good for Summer grasses. The lawn sprung back beautifully! The lawn stayed thick and full even when it lost its green late fall. I did have one small spot that was somewhat thin spot where the sod did not take as well as the rest. It was not noticeable from the street. My neighbors can attest to my pretty lawn well into the Fall prior to starting with ALM last Spring. All asked what happened after the first couple of treatments by ALM. Mind you the Spring with the Scott's Summer Grass blend, the lawn greened up quickly, Sadly, last summer, what I got was a partial green up that was not at all plush. I had a lawn that was more brown, full of weeds, with very little Zoysia remaining. I also had some sort of insect toward the end of summer I had piles of dirt on the edge of my walkway that I did not have before. ALM's response was "you may have had some damage from winter." [Even though we had a very mild winter that year.] And nope, because the lawn was still a full lawn before they touched it. I was told to give it more water and to watch it. When it was clear that nothing was improving and it was a looking worse with each passing day, I contacted them. Their answer, "we can come do another application." I don't think so. If I replace the sod this year, I will not be using any commercial company for treatment. I will stick with applying Scott's myself. read more

I have been using ALM for almost a year now. Recently had some damage in my back yard caused by ALM service. The wire backing on a vinyl fence gate was torn loose and a piece of patio lighting was knocked over and damaged. It took me about 45 minutes to make repairs on both of these items. I pointed this out to the service technician and the route manager and the technician admitted to knocking over the patio lighting. The route manager, Dustin Keesee, was very rude, argumentative, and hostile. My expectation was that I would let them know of the damage that I found and they would be more careful for that not to happen in the future. However that was not the case, Dustin Keesee was very rude and argumentative about the issue and kept attempting to tell me how this was my fault and I should have called to report the damage the day I discovered it. I tried to tell him that both damaged items were not destroyed but it did take me a few minutes, about 45 minutes total, to repair both items and that I made a note of the damage and wanted to mention it to them the next time they came out for service. I was not able to convey that to him because he kept interrupting me saying "Will you be quiet now so I can talk?" After 3 or 4 of those interruptions I knew he was not listening to me. I told him "Sure, go ahead" The route manager then proceeded to tell me that I was wrong and should have called to report it the day that it happened. After a few minutes of this argument back and forth I finally just told them to leave my property and still Dustin continued to argue, so I told him again to leave my property NOW! He did start walking to his truck still talking but I was completely done listening to him by this point. I did call the ALM office and spoke with someone who identified herself as the office manager, Madison. I ran down the events and she kept attempting to make excuses for them. I never write bad reviews. I try to give the provider the benefit of the doubt, but this was an absolute failure at customer service. I was hoping for them to tell me that they would be more careful in the future. I also have several ring outdoor and doorbell cameras with a very good 360 degree view of my property. read more

Down our street we have known competitors working on our neighbors' lawns and not a single one can compare to our results. Started with ALM 3 years ago in 2015. Selected the recommended number of treatments along with pre-treatment based on the soil testing results. Followed thru every year paying in advance as well as the slit seeding program for the three years. After 3 years my lawn is in worse condition than before I started, large areas of no grass at all as well as more weeds than grass. I was told initially that it would take 2 to 3 years to develop a healthy lawn of grass but all I have after 3 years of expensive treatments and seeding is lots of bare areas and those that are not bare are very thin and full of weeds. After talking to the techs (who are extremely nice) I asked for the owner or an officer to call me. It took over a month for this to occur and his perfunctory answer was "We had 48" of rain and that is the problem", He didn't offer to even look at the situation, just kept saying the same thing over and over and even told me I needed to seed every single year. He offered no help at all and has zero customer skills. I have terminated service and will never recommend ALM to anyone, friend or foe. And this is not my first rodeo as I have owned homes in other tidewater areas and have had no problem growing healthy lawns that only require over-seeding every third or fourth year, not every single year. My recommendation is to stay as far away from this company as possible as they collect your money but do not deliver what they promote and promise. And when one becomes concerned, they become rude and defensive and offer to terminate your service but no offer to resolve your problems or concerns. Since I am a VT alumnus, I find it hard to believe they are associated with VT in any way. read more

All started out good, Now NOT so good lawn looks like crap! Since I started using them my lawn has looked worse and worse. Very confusing and deceptive billing practices. My technician was very nice but the service cost way too much for what you get and I can do it a lot cheaper and do a better job myself. Now the scumbags claim I have a unpaid service they never did, I have paid for the services I recieved in full and have the cancel checks! I also have 24 hour video surveillancele of the day they claim the service to have been done and no one from ALM was on my lawn... Now a collection company contacted me trying to collect and threatened legal action. I never even had a contract with them, they are going to wind up in court! These people analyzed my Ocean View lawn as Augustine and started treating accordingly, promising that the fast growing variety would flourish. Did the soil analysis, lime, and watered as directed. Any sign of green disappeared and I've had nothing but dirt for months! Then they applied fertilizer in top on three weeks of leaves while I was out of town in Dec. No visible residue or slow dissolve pellets. I think they only applied a sign and bo chemical. Even after my call, they continue to bill me. read more

Disappointed to say the least. We started service with them in 2015. We had them slit seed the lawn. It cost around 450.00. The seed they used was not quality, we had what ALM called winter grass and Dallis grass everywhere. It's so frustrating. We hired them for one thing and that was to control the weeds and they haven't controlled anything but clover. We originally gave them a try because we had one area on the left side of our driveway that was very stubborn weed wise. 1 year later, that area looks worse than when we started. We've spent all this money and it looked better when my husband was maintaining it. We are back to square one. What sealed the deal with being done was when I called to let them know I wasn't happy. The lady could have cared less. She didn't offer to send a tech out to take a look or anything. She cancelled our service without hesitation. I work in the service industry and would never have just let someone walk away without trying to first rectify the problem. Do not waste your money.
