They take immense pride i their culture and it is most definitely reflected I. their food! The inside ambiance reminds me of a restaurant I went to while visiting Mexico. Authentic Mexican in St Pete Beach! This place is legit - as a Ca native, I can attest there's no decent Mexican food in this town except Agave. The al pastor tacos are the real deal and the chicken mole is pretty awesome. Service is solid and the drinks are great. This restaurant made me realize how much my hometown Mexican restaurant spoils me. It's obvious the margaritas are made from a mix (which I probably have in my kitchen and should throw away). Then they add the low-grade tequila and cheap triple sec. For good measure, there's probably some water. I knew right away that it was all a mistake. They asked if we wanted chips and salsa. Found this gem at the end of a long Saturday filled with beach bar crawling and it turned out to be the culinary highlight of the day! Agave's easy to miss, sitting on the crowded stretch of Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach where parking is scarce and bar and restaurant options are everywhere. Do yourself a favor and take the time to discover this charming, family-owned and operated spot, especially if you love Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. It's sure to become a favorite. That Saturday, our party of three started with Agave's "Trio" -- house-made chips served with pico de gallo, guacamole, and cheese dip. Right away, we knew we'd found a great spot. The cheese dip was rich and had distinct flavor -- you could tell it did not come out of a jar. The guacamole was fresh and the pico had plenty of lime and cilantro flavor. Things just got better from there. Mel's Enchilada's de puerco came rolled in fresh corn tortillas and smothered in delicious white cheese, while our friend Dan had his hands full with his order of fajitas, a serving large enough for two, easily. I liked my choice best, though: Laguneros tacos! Four corn tortillas filled with a mix of beef, pork, chorizo, tomatoes, onions, peppers, jalapeños, and cilantro -- everything you could possible want as far as taco fillings in one combo. Try them for yourself -- they'll change your life! Of course, because they're so good, Agave is well known to locals in St. Pete Beach, so it gets busy and their dining room and bar are not big. If you go on a weekend, expect to wait for a table, especially during the day. Weekday evenings might be a better bet in terms of getting seated faster. Whenever you go, it will be worth the trip. Agave is one of our new favorites, especially since we live nearby. We'll definitely be back! read more

What a strange experience. The restaurant was almost full but were asked to go "two doors down" to the Tequila Bar to wait our turn to be seated. And the strangeness begins. Waited here thirty min. I went to the bar and ordered a margarita. I was asked to pay $15 for a small glass of very poorly made margarita. It was cheap tequila. Come to find out later in Agave they do not have any Margarita for $15. Their top shelf tequila marg is only $10 with a premium something margarita for $12. So if you're going to order a drink at the tequila bar ask for the price and what tequila is being used before ordering you may end up overpaying for your drink. Now the food was just OK service and time to deliver the food just was ok. But here comes the kicker. Always Always review your bill to be sure you're being charged for what you really ordered. 1 appetizer 2 plates and 2 diet cokes was $77 but the receipt was not our order! It was completely made up. It was liked we had someone else's bill but by this time the bar counter where we were sitting had cleared out. The bartender was trying to make a quick $34 extra on us. No apology she just laughed and said "oh I messed that one up". We had to sign the wrong receipt. Then we had the option of cash or a refund on CC. Why not just void the transactio and re ring it up. Also, Back home chips and salsa before dinner are always free. Not here. Not sure if all Mexican restaurants charge for chips and salsa in Florida? read more

I'm updating my 2015-era review and bumping from three to five stars, as I've been coming here several times per month for four years now. Before reading further, or choosing to visit based on my rating, please note that service can be very slow when things are busy. Why still five stars? It's a family run business, cranking out fantastic authentic food, nearly all the staff are friends or family of one another, and once you get to know them, they make you feel like part of the family. My family doesn't always offer the best service to me when we have big get togethers, so I'm willing to let Agave have a few slips here and there too, and will base my rating on the long term overall experience. The food is great authentic Mexican, so obviously we come for the food, and we return repeatedly for the food. The margaritas are fantastic as well. The menu is very large, and I've found numerous items I like, so it can actually be difficult to choose when I've got so many options I really enjoy. I think my #1 is their Pollo con Chipotle; it has a fantastic sauce, but perhaps a close second is Puerco en Salsa Verde. Their three different hot sauces are also great; not bottled store-bought stuff here, you receive a tomatillo, a chipotle, and a hot habanero. On the drink side, they have 40+ tequilas available, so if that's your thing, they probably have it. They will also make a margarita from the tequila of your choice for the shot price plus $2, so that's a nice option to have too if you're picky about which tequila is used. The house margarita is great; not too much mix, and reasonably strong. If you're just wanting to chug margs, then I recommend VIP Mexican up in Treasure Island (great $5 margs any day and $3 on Thursday). They also have a few mezcals, but if you're really wanting to expand your horizons, a gentleman from the same family owns El Agave Lounge two doors down with a fantastic selection of tequilas and mezcals. Parking is in short supply, so you may not be able to get a spot. The location is also not very stroller friendly as the tables are spaced pretty tightly. read more

Excellent Mole. I dream of this Mole. (If you don't know, mole is a spicy chocolate sauce, in this case served on chicken). Good margaritas, a little light on the lime. The tortilla chips are firmer than average and delicious. If I had to complain, the salsa could use a blender. It's both chunky and liquidy at the same time, not ideal for your chip dipping. And, it would be awesome if they were open later. I usually go after watching sunset on the beach, only to find their kitchen has closed. read more

Chips and salsa don't come standard--that'll be $3. Service really suffered. We went at 6pm in a Tuesday and I think the service suffered because of how busy they got--that's not a waitressing problem that's a manager staffing problem. We saw our waitress when she took our order and when we paid--which was about 20 minutes after we actually finished eating because that's how long it took her to get back to us. Hubby and I are always in the mood for authentic tacos so we knew we had to try this place out. It ended up being more upscale than we were expecting, but was still pretty good. We went ahead and got the trio sampler, which was ok. I ended up only really liking the guacamole. You can order tacos individually so we got some different things that appealed to us. Nothing really stood out so we got our usual carnitas and al pastor. The waitress asked if we wanted rice and beans with it and I automatically said yes, assuming they came with it. I'm not sure why I assumed that and didn't ask how much they cost but it was fine. It was a cute little place. I had heard from several sources that this was one of the best Mexican Places in St.Pete. I'm from California, so I was excited to try it out! Nothing had any flavor! The refried beans had no taste, not to mention my main dish. I'm sorry but if this is what people from Florida think is the best... I might have to import some real Mexicans from Southern Cali.
