You can sign up for Rec and be put in Rec plus or even higher where it is NOT FUN and you are DEFINITELY out of your league. I have asked MANY times for refunds and they can't because of "policy". YET, if you don't show up to play your games you will just get charged MORE $ for defaults, I've never seen a league that wants more of your money every second they can. I've tried over and over to be nice to owners, managers, and people and to JUST put me WHERE I SIGNED UP. I WANT TO BE IN REC NOT ANYWHERE ELSE because I know that's where I should be. I don't give an f*** about the terrible analytics that will tell me different. I would never tell someone to sign up for this league. SAVE YOUR $.

It's actually very interesting to check out different school gyms, but the thing is most of the time they are too far. Like this season, we keep going to Evergreen and Shawnessy. Also most of the time the gyms have really low ceilings and the whole basketball thing is not removable. The teams there sometimes do not have the sportsmanship. During the seeding weeks they are like very new to volleyball, but after the seeding (3 weeks later) they become pro!

We all enjoy the vibe of an upbeat spin class, and this was a similar atmosphere except you get to punch a heavy bag to the beat of the music. The first class was complimentary and we paid $15 each for wraps that we could take home and use another time. The nicest woman assisted us to wrap our hands (I am actually unsure if she's a frequent Rumble boxer or staff but either way am very grateful, ha!). We were also eligible to book a free 1:1 session to learn about the technique but given we don't live in Calgary, we didn't do that. The studio was clean, modern, and easy to find on 17th ave. Pro tip - maybe use the bathroom before wrapping your hands..... Our instructor was Olsen or "The Rock" and he really WENT for it with the combinations. The instructions were clear and simple to follow. You can tell he loves boxing and music and just instructing people in general. Shout out to the guy in the spot in front of me because I copied everything he was doing haha. What a great way to sweat and start the day! I would totally do another class and my hope is that this franchise opens in the Toronto/GTA area one day!

The Flames compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference. The Flames are the third major professional ice hockey team to represent the city of Calgary, following the Calgary Tigers (1921-1927) and Calgary Cowboys (1975-1977). The team was founded in 1972 in Atlanta as the Atlanta Flames before relocating to Calgary in 1980. In 1988-89, the Flames won their first and only Stanley Cup title. Atlanta losing the Flames is another example of why we need to support our local teams. Bankruptcy isn't pretty. I guess since I was always a hockey fan this team is another story close to my heart. The Flames moved to Calgary in 1980, so the franchise wasn't in Atlanta long. Atlanta also lost its other NHL team to Canada when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg and became the Jets in 2011. Despite a long history of decent success (two Presidents' Trophies in 1988 and 1989, seven division championships from 1988 to 2019, and 24 playoff appearances), the Flames have won only one Stanley Cup championship: 1989. At the end of his Hall-of-Fame career, Lanny McDonald scored a memorable goal in Game 6 of the 1989 Finals. It was the game in which the Flames clinched the championship. It also turned out to be McDonald's last game as a player. He ended his 17-year playing career (the last eight with Calgary) as a champion. McDonald, Mike Vernon, and Jarome Iginla are the only three Flames players to have their numbers retired by the franchise. All three are in the Hockey Hall of Fame with Iginla getting inducted just last year (2020). Of the three, Vernon was the only player to be drafted by the Flames. He had two stints in Calgary. In his first stint, he was the goalie on the 1989 championship team, teammates with McDonald. Iginla played most of his professional career for the Flames (1995-2013). He was the cover star of EA Sports NHL 2003, wearing a Flames jersey. He won two gold medals representing Canada in the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics. He holds numerous Flames team records including most points (1,095), goals (525), and games played (1,219). He was a six-time NHL All-Star. He scored the most points in the NHL for the 2001-02 season (Art Ross Trophy), won the Ted Lindsay Award that same year (league's Most Outstanding Player), and led the league in goals scored in both the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons (Rocket Richard Trophy). The latter was a three-way tie between Iginla, Rick Nash (Columbus Blue Jackets), and Ilya Kovalchuk (Thrashers). The Flames' only other Stanley Cup Finals appearance occurred in 2004 with Iginla as captain. Unfortunately, the Flames lost in a tight seven-game series to the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-3. Calgary hasn't won the Western Conference since, but with two-time Cup-winner Darryl Sutter returning as head coach this year (2021), there's reason for optimism at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Did you know that there's an honest to goodness classic European sword combat school in Calgary?…read more I'm not talking about fencing, and definately nothing to do with Japanese or Chinese style, but the classic Longsword and combat skills used that was the standard for European combat for centuries in the days of knights and armour. And I DEFINATELY do not mean the style that is flashy, looks exciting but still safe as practiced by the Society of Creative Anachronism (the international organization that re-enacts a weird modern idealized version of the middle ages, minus the rats, the plague and lack of toilets). Sword Academy is a different kind of animal where martial arts schools are concerned. Taught by Sword Master and former Serbian Olympic champion, Milan Petrovic, Sword Academy teaches the European martial arts as taught to the knights using classic manuals and methods dating back to the 12th century. Broadsword, Longsword, Open Hand, Rapier and other classic arms, the style taught is effective, and very much respected. Members are taught to respect the traditions of the old, and the history and techniques. In fact, on top of the martial skills, members are also given the opportunity to learn how the weapons were actually forged and to make them themselves as well. Master Petrovic takes care to teach with various levels of safety based on skill, with beginner training in wooden swords before progressing to higher levels of difficulties (eventually progressing to training with actual steel). Practice combats are done with safety in mind at all times, Classes are taught in a way to take into account ages (from children to adults) as well as proficiency, and it's a great way to work out as well. Sunday classes are at Cederbrae, but also taught in other areas in town during the week. #51 of Yelp's 30-Day Review Challenge

I had long been…read moreinterested in historical European martial arts and have been immensely satisfied that I finally took the plunge and participated myself. Sword Academy is not a competitive or exclusive club - there is light sparring only and any responsible individuals are welcome. Milan's emphasis is on learning historical technique and context, improving general fitness and skills, and on having fun. The group is welcoming and friendly toward beginners and always eager to help new members out, loan them swords, and give advice. The class also offers members plenty of exercise per week as the first hour of each two hour session is spent in a "warm-up" game of some kind - ultimate, basketball, soccer, badminton etc. I have found that as the months went by, especially in the summer when two sessions are offered per week, that my fitness level improved noticeably. Different fighting systems and weapons are also rotated on a regular basis at Sword Academy, often with class input. I find this works quite well as it avoids boredom doing one weapon or system for too long while also building up similar fundamental skills throughout. I heartily recommend Sword Academy to anyone interested in historical weapons based martial arts and who wants to have fun and get some exercise while doing it, all in a comfortable non-competitive atmosphere.
