There are many people at Affirmations who struggle with mental health issues and daily functioning. Everything seems to revolve around being gay, personal opinions about life, the stress of being homosexual, and experiences of discrimination. In my experience, some people can be hypocritical and overly critical. It can feel like you have to think and act like them and agree with their views.
I am not gay, but I attended some of their meetings out of boredom. I feel that white gay people are sometimes treated differently than Black gay people, even when a Black gay person is running the center. In the past, it seemed like being gay was simply about loving someone of the same sex, without as much emphasis on identity or politics.
I felt that some meetings were cliquey and judgmental, and that people did not respect different points of view--especially if you are Black and do not share certain perspectives.
