I learned a lot about myself and how to cope and deal with things that I encounter with stress, mental health, and etc. I had homework assignments which helped me and allowed me to use these in my everyday life. My disclaimer is that I am not a patient, neither have I been a patient, so this review is about professionalism and ease of scheduling services. I contacted the office to make an appointment. The phone was answered by the counselor herself. She advised that she would have her assistant call back for scheduling, I received no such call. A week or so later, I tried again. I had several sessions with Ms. Cowan some time ago that I truly enjoyed. However, that ended when some billing inconsistencies started showing up. The very short story is that I was told by Ms Cowan that my insurance company (who has her listed as an in-network provider) was rejecting her claims. As a matter of good faith, I began paying the FULL cash price until I got it sorted out. Weeks went by...Ms Cowan maintained insurance was rejecting the claims, insurance said that they never received any. One day I happened to look at my online insurance portal and every single claim that she claimed had been refused had all been submitted, processed, and paid out on the same day. So Ms. Cowan got paid by both the insurance company and me. I gave the benefit of the doubt and reached out to Ms. Cowan to see if she could apply my cash payments to future copays. No response. I called, emailed, and got ignored. I called the insurance company to ask what I needed to do to get a refund, explained the situation, and they immediately transferred me to their fraud investigation department. That should tell you something. After they took down my information, they reached out to her directly and lo and behold! I finally got a call back and got my payments refunded. I didn't even get an apology or any type of explanation. I really wanted to support this practice, but it is incredibly sad that a THERAPIST would try to take advantage of someone who was coming to them for help. Be forewarned if you go here. read more

Mapping Out Sucess Before scheduling my appointment with Montrella Cowan I was super nervous about therapy. I knew I needed professional help to manage my life, relationships, and other life-stress factors but I wasn't sure on how to start working on myself. My first session with Montrella was EVERYTHING I needed. She encouraged me to take notes from our session and apply them to my daily life tasks. Among many life-accomplishments that she led me to conquer, I want to focus this review on my career path. I became stagnant in my previous position and I did not identify myself as being stuck until I sat on Montrella's couch. I didn't like my job but it paid the bills so I remained. Through her therapy sessions, one of my 1st exercises consisted of me mapping out what my "perfect" career/job would look like. We did not turn this into an action plan it was more so of a checklist for the future. A future, I thought was so far away. Rewind a few months into my, stagnant work-life, I was placed in a situation beyond my control and lost my job. I met with Montrella and she reminded me to pull my journal out. When I first sought out therapy, I was looking for a black therapist with experience in PTSD, depression and anxiety. (This was before she started using the life coach title heavy which is all she is and should've stated instead of pocketing my money). I asked Montrella if those were fields she had experience with, she said yes. I went to her 4 times until I realized she didn't know what she was doing but she always made sure to collect her $40 co-pay at the beginning of each session. Come to find out, my co-pay was only $30. When I told her I wanted my $40 refunded, she said she would just apply it to another session. I told her I didn't want to do that because I didn't have any intentions of seeing her for treatment. She ignored my emails and phone calls. I think she's just ripping people off and pretending that she knows what she's talking about because although life coaching wasn't what I needed, it's still what she tried to pull off as therapy and even that wasn't good advice. read more

Unprofessional and unresponsive. Sessions were fine at first, but I was wrongfully paying out of pocket to a provider who was knowingly in-network. I was assured I would be refunded less my co-pay amount after she submitted claims. She used two different tax IDs and diagnostic codes that were outside of my coverage. I still have not had one email returned by the provider, nor have I been refunded. Just rude and completely unprofessional. read more
