Our search for the perfect photographer began with a list of companies provided to us by our wedding planner. We chose to work with Henry Chen at Aevitas Weddings because his style was the best fit for the vibe we were aiming for, and we couldn't have been more pleased with our decision. Henry was absolutely perfect from start to finish and completely surpassed our expectations. He understood that we wanted to eschew many conventional aspects of weddings but that ultimately, we still wanted to have a wedding. He also had extremely informative guides detailing exactly what we needed to do at each step and how we can ensure we are prepared, whether it was for the engagement photo session or for actual wedding day. Henry is also one of the most patient and truly kind individuals we have worked with - he constantly reassured us when we felt overwhelmed and stressed out by our schedule, and he made a tremendous effort to keep us at ease when there were a multitude of things going on at the same time. He also was just an awesome and pleasant person to hang around - he has mastered the art of arranging and taking our photos while still taking the time to have meaningful conversations and get to know our family, wedding party and friends. One of the challenges that Henry handled with ease was incorporating our 90-pound German Shepherd Dog, Toffee, into both the engagement photo session and wedding day photos. Henry did a phenomenal job setting up the photos with Toffee, and it was not an easy task to get her to sit still and to look at the camera. Henry had to call her name constantly and try to get her attention, but his hard work paid off because he took some absolutely beautiful photos of her. For our engagement photo shoot, Henry had helped us come up with a detailed itinerary for three different locations. A few days before the shoot, we suddenly had a change of heart and decided that we wanted to change up two of the locations - when we finally decided on which locations we wanted, it was already the day before the shoot. We wrote an apologetic email to Henry asking if it would be okay if we changed up some of the locations - not only was Henry very flexible and supportive, he also drove out to those locations on his own to scout them out the morning of the shoot. Our favorite photos from the shoot ended up being at a location (abandoned railroad tracks in South Los Angeles) that we found spontaneously because an accident had occurred where we were originally planning to shoot and we couldn't access the area. But all of this is a testament to Henry's professionalism and skill as a photographer in that he can both roll with the punches and help us come up with creative poses that fit the surroundings of the area. More nerve-wracking than the actual wedding day was all of the preparation leading up to the day. But Henry kept us on track by having us fill out a lengthy questionnaire that he then reviewed with us in detail for about an hour. The questionnaire and interview turned out to be pivotal tools for Henry to utilize in creating our final minute-by-minute schedule for wedding day. Then on the actual wedding day, we had rented a small apartment to get ready in; Henry fully utilized the space and also did a great job keeping the bridal party and groomsmen separated as much as possible. He was also especially accommodating because we didn't have a cocktail reception at our wedding, and so it was tremendously difficult to have to squeeze in photos with extended family members; we ended up having 20 different groups of family members and Henry handled the entire process so efficiently. During the actual wedding, Henry and his assistant were always nearby, ready to snap photos of us and our guests. He also worked extremely well with our videographer, making sure to ask our videographer if he had enough space to get the shots that he needed. Lastly, we were beyond impressed by how quickly Henry presented our photos to us. Within two weeks of the wedding, Henry had published a sneak peek on his blog, with a detailed write-up of the entire day's events. We are so thrilled with how seriously Henry takes his job, knowing that he is a crucial part of our special day and all of the months of preparation leading up to the wedding. I found Henry Chen Photography through a friend of a friend and through certain wedding websites. I was very impressed by the lighting and the composition of his work. The pictures he took of other peoople were so beautiful so I decided to hire him for our engagement session in SoCal. We are originally from Northern California, but we wanted to take photos in Socal because that was a place nearest and dearest to our hearts when we were dating. When it came to contacting Henry, he was very prompt and reliable. He was quick to respond and very kind in everything he wrote. He was very accommodating and friendly on the phone. I loved how he took charge and showed us how to model for these photos. He was very easy to talk to and a joy to work with. After it was over, he was also so nice to not charge us overtime because our session ran a little over time. The biggest surprise I got was that he had worked on the photos the same night and had about ten photos up and ready for us to see on his blog. I was amazed by the quick turnaround. Aevitas Weddings was actually the most expensive vendor we had booked for our little wedding--and to us, he was worth every dime we paid for! When planning our wedding, the photographer was the only expense we didn't want to skimp on as we knew it was the way we were going to remember our special day. We looked at hundreds of portfolios and talked to more than ten photographers. The search stopped when we talked to Henry. First, we looked at his portfolio. His style was very unique. He is what's called a photojournalist, which means he is quick at capturing the moments as they happen and his photos were a recreation of the wedding as if it were from the eyes of one of the guests. It's been a fun ride with Mr. Henry Chen!! Our initial interview with Henry was at the end of January and from that first meeting we knew he was our man - I think we pretty much signed our contract and locked him up the next day. Planning a wedding can be a busy and tiring process, so it is extremely important to lock down your major items - venue, food, photographer, make up, dj etc. With Henry as our photographer he was professional, attentive, and EXTREMELY ORGANIZED!! My wife (then fiance) and I never had to worry about Henry. If we ever had a question - we would simply e-mail or give him a ring. It's so difficult to select the right person to be our photographer because we don't want to ruin the special moments in our lives. Before we made the decision to hire Henry as our post-wedding shoot photographer, I've done a lot of research online and contacted more than 10 photographers. I first found Henry on Yelp. I filtered the reviews to check if he has some bad reviews. Surprisingly, NONE! It's nearly impossible to do that. I know Yelp algorithm is very tricky. They want to show the real reviews, and if you get a bad review, it's not easy to get rid of it even you complain with their reps thousands of time (some experience as a marketer). The only thing Henry can get so many 5-star reviews is to offer the best service possible to every single customer. I also noticed that he responded to reviews without using automatic message template, but telling the stories of how he worked with those couples. I also looked through his website (i.e. blogs, portfolio, podcast, his profile), Youtube and his online photography training website (very impressed by his story about why he changed his career from a system engineer to a wedding photographer). Without meeting with him, I can tell that Henry is not only good at capturing the high-quality pictures, but also incredibly passionate about his job. Though it's a little bit frustrated Henry did not pick up the phone when I contacted him at the very first beginning, I told myself that I have to find him. Then I filled out the form on his website. Within few hours, he replied my inquiry. We have around 30+ back-and-forth emails during the whole process. Henry made it very easy throughout our email conversations. He is so professional, detail-oriented and highly organized. Me and my husband had no ideas about how to arrange the shoot. Henry gave his recommendations on locations and shoot timeline and referred us some makeup artists! He is the only vendor that always answers my endless questions within a few hours and even at night. Before the photo shoot, Henry asked us to fill out a form about how I met with my husband, what do we do together in the spare time....I can feel that he doesn't just capture the memories for us, he wants to engage with us so we can work together more like an old friend. Where do I start? Henry goes way above what my wife and I expected! When we hired Henry as our photographer we simply thought that was it. Having someone come to your e-shoot and wedding to take photos. He actually in a way helped guide us in coordinating our wedding (we had no coordinator btw). My husband and I had the pleasure of having Henry as our photographer for our wedding.. and let me tell you how AMAZING he is at what he does. We found him through the work he did for our cousins wedding a couple years ago, and after seeing how beautiful their wedding photos were, we knew we had to have him for our special day. My husband and I had Henry as our photographer for our engagement session as well as our wedding day. Henry is very personable and makes a real effort in getting to know you in order to retell your story through his photos. My husband and I feel rather awkward when it comes to taking professional photos but Henry made it so easy and comfortable - guiding and encouraging us throughout the engagement session. Prior to our wedding day, Henry requested that we complete a questionnaire in order to understand our timeline, priorities and expectations. For example, if we prefer to take more portrait photos after the ceremony or rather spend the time mingling with our guests during cocktail hour. I was very pleased to receive so many photos of my guests as I had requested from our meeting. I would say his photo style is vivid - the colors really pop - high definition, crisp and clean. I had chosen a spot at my venue where I wanted to do the first look, but Henry explained that the lighting at that time of the day would be too harsh. He chose a different spot for the first look but saved the spot I had chosen for later in the day to do our after-ceremony portrait photos. Henry was mindful of our timeline and we never fell behind schedule. His second photographer, Jeremiah, was also amazing and detail-oriented. For example, when taking portrait photos of our groomsmen, he made sure they removed their cellphones from their pockets so that they won't show up in the photos. I have to say that out of all our vendors, Henry was the most hardworking person on our wedding day. As with any wedding, not everything goes according to plan, but Henry took it all in stride. His patience, enthusiasm and energy were 100% from start to finish. We also truly appreciate how well he worked with our other vendors. He was conscious of sharing space and time with our videographers, constantly thanked our day-of-coordinator and her assistant for helping throughout the portrait sessions, and shared his photos of the reception set-up and food with our caterer. Our engagement photos were ready within 2 weeks. Our wedding day slideshow was available within 2 weeks and our full wedding gallery was ready within a month (less than 30 days to be exact!). A little over due for writing an update, but I received all my photos back from the wedding and they are GORGEOUS. We were lucky to have Henry as our photographer, I have nothing but great things to say about him. From our initial interactions through email, he was always super quick to respond with any questions we had. You can tell that he really cares about his clients and takes the time to get to know each couple. Based on his work from his website and his attention to detail, I knew he was the right photographer for us. We booked him about 9 months before our wedding, but he is so organized and followed up with us throughout or wedding planning. It was really helpful when he had us fill out a questionnaire in regards to our wedding timeline to make sure we allotted enough time for all the important moments and photos. This was followed up with a video conference to fine-tune the schedule a month before our wedding. Every correspondence I've had with Henry was always met with enthusiasm and detail, he never wavered with his professionalism and responsiveness. Come the day of the wedding, Henry and the second photographer, Jeremiah showed up early and started working right away. Makeup took a little longer than expected so we were running a bit behind, but Henry was so patient and was able to get us back on schedule and still capture all the important photos. He was also so great with directing us the whole day on how to pose, where to stand, where to look, and even noticed little things like having the moms' corsages on the proper wrist so it shows in the photos. Realized how physically demanding it is being a wedding photographer, Henry and Jeremiah were on their feet the whole day, having to kneel down or reach up for certain shots, and even moved furniture around to accommodate us. Our wedding day, like most, was a whirlwind. The day flew by so fast it was hard to remember everything so it was nice to receive our sneak peek photos in a form of a blog 2 weeks after our wedding. Henry captured our wedding day so well, not only do his photos tell the story, but it's like he remembered our wedding better than we did! We received the full online gallery of all our photos a week after that and couldn't be happier. The photos truly captured our wedding and were so beautiful and timeless. Photos are one of the most important mementos for a wedding so I wanted them to help me remember my special day and I think Henry completely nailed it. Henry did our engagement photos a couple months ago and it was an absolutely amazing experience! We arranged for a Skype call before making an official contract, we immediately felt connected (especially after finding out me and his wife share the same name ha!) and decided to go with him. We live outside of the States so our main channel of communication was email, but Henry was very responsive and never missed any of our questions. Since we travelled far for our photoshoot we wanted to do a bit more locations (5-6 vs. the usual 2-3) and Henry was super accommodating, tried his best to fit everything into the schedule and also planned the rundown for the day. Everything turned out well on the day and we had so much fun! You do not have to worry about not knowing how to pose for your photos, as Henry is very specific in giving instructions on where to stand, how to pose or what you should do. We got our photos in just two weeks after the shoot and they were fantastic!! Exactly what I was looking for - natural, sharp with many interesting perspectives and background. Nicest photos I've ever had in my life :) They came in the form of an online interactive photo album which has a sleek design, you can even share them with your friends and guests! Like many others who have reviewed Henry, photography is one of the big ticket items that I wanted to "splurge" on for our wedding. Because I'm vain! Obviously! But in all sincerity, Henry is an amazing guy and a more amazing photographer. Not only is he savvy to aesthetically pleasing hot-spots, he's also really nice, sincere and friendly. This really, really helps when you aren't some top model bizness who is used to being on the shutter end of a camera. He was so good at helping us relax, have fun, and enjoy our time together....making out....for the camera. ;) So far we've done our engagement session with Henry and from the couple of shots he's shown us, I am so excited! The man is a natural, he has a great eye! Henry's fees are on the high-er end, however, not what I'd consider extravagant. I must say... wedding photographers aren't cheap. But, we already knew that from day one. If you want good photos, that'll last you a lifetime - DON'T BE CHEAP. From the beginning, I told my (now) husband - I wanted to splurge on photography. Because at the end of the day, all you'll end up with are your photos (and memories) of course. We interviewed photographers from SF and the bay area and we felt like we didn't click with any of them. Nor did any of their work put out a WOW factor. Let me just say, it's really important you like and trust who you work with... especially since it'll be for your once in a lifetime wedding. Like my review before, I fell in love with Henry's work. His photo's have such an artistic touch to them, so after our phone meeting - I knew he was the one. We have absolutely NO regrets hiring Henry as our photographer. He did an exceptional job during our e-session. Fast forward to our wedding day, he was not only on time and ready to work - he even stayed with us past the 12 hours we had him for. That truly meant the world to us, since I know it was a really long day. (btw, please thank Charlene for being so helpful!) I must admit, I was a bit bummed at the end of the day because I felt as if we didn't have enough time for pictures. I felt so rushed so I thought the shots wouldn't be turning out that great. Our experience with Henry and his team was amazing from the beginning! We first met with him at his home office where we had the opportunity to see photos and albums from over the years. It really allowed us to see his progress as a photographer which is why we were so excited to move forward and lock him in for our big day! The attached photos are from our engagement shoot which was a fantastic experience even though it was freezing outside. We went to two different locations and he had creative ideas for both. Henry Chen is an amazingly thoughtful, friendly, organized, professional, and caring photographer for our September 2012 wedding and June 2012 engagement session in southern California. On our wedding day, he helped my family and I coordinate and execute our not-very-traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony. It was in those moments when I realized I had no idea what was expected for a tea ceremony (I have never attended a tea ceremony before my wedding day and my husband's family is Japanese). Henry helped me to stay calm and provided helpful suggestions on what I can do (not must do). I trusted that he knew what he was saying/doing so I let the rest just unfold naturally. Henry and his assistant were with us from 8am-midnight from the tea ceremony, church ceremony, luncheon, portraits session with the wedding party, cocktail hour, and reception. As per our contract, we only had him until 10pm, but he stayed 2 extra hours without added charges. For his generosity we cannot thank him enough for being with us and by our sides every step of the way. And last but certainly not least, all of Henry's photos of our wedding day are just AMAZING!!! We are so glad we did not cheap out on our wedding photography because they will be with us for a lifetime. All of our families and friends have given us rave reviews on all the photos. First off, I would just like to say that Henry Chen Photography was the best vendor we had for our entire wedding. When we started planning our wedding, we had a particular amount that we hoped to spend on photography, but when we saw Henry's work, we knew we had to hire him even if it meant spending more than we had planned on. And we're glad we did! From the first meeting, to the engagement shoot, to the wedding day-Henry delivered everything we expected and beyond! Our engagement shoot ran slightly longer than expected due to traffic and traveling from one site to another, but Henry accommodated the extra time and didn't put in any less effort at the end than he did at the beginning. He always thought of creative shots to take and seemed very invested in the finished product even while he was taking the photos. One important point that we noticed was that Henry takes time to take a perfect photo the first time around. He doesn't rely on post-production processing to perfect the image. With our engagement photos, we were able to select certain ones for complete touch ups and refinishing, but even the ones that weren't further touched up were amazing. Our wedding day, of course was even better. Henry and his team showed up before their scheduled time to make sure that they weren't late. Henry and his team were professional, polite and great to be around. They were able to capture moments that we wouldn't even have thought were important to capture on film. They have great vision. They were also able to capture all the moments that we weren't present for since we couldn't be in ten places at once. Now that we've received our final album, we can say that without a doubt, this was money well spent. Henry is truly passionate about what he does. Normally you would see a review here from a B&G who were clients of Henry's. Well we are friends of a special bride and groom who got married on July 20th in Glendale, CA. My hubby was the officiant and I had the honor of MCing the reception. Every year, we go to several weddings and are often involved in them one way or another, and this is the first time I felt compelled to write a review for the photographer. What can I say that the other reviews haven't raved about already? Henry is every amazing adjective that everyone describes him as. He is simply AWESOME...in an unassuming, quiet, humble way. Rather than a lot of flowery language, let me break it down: 1. Creative genius without being bizarre lol. His work clearly displays this. 2. Henry and his assistant take a bazillion shots from various angles. [His gorgeous wife was assisting on this particular day] 3. Super stealth when shooting. Almost invisible. They are NON-intrusive and not in your face like many photographers and videographers I've encountered. 4. Perfectly Professional. Henry is utterly sweet, patient and accommodating and his wife is bubbly and funny. In addition, they are professionally attired. Yes, we live in California, and things are more laid back, but I HATE vendors showing up in shorts or raggedy clothes like one photographer did at another wedding we attended this past weekend. 5. Bang for your dollar. These days it can be challenging to find a talented photographer who won't burn a crater in your bank account. Although Henry has shot weddings all over the world, and is very experienced, his rates remain competitive. He compassionately understands that everyone is on a budget and does his best to work with each client's budget (as he did so with our friends). 6. Client gets all rights to photos. People, believe me this is a MUST! 7. Time Sensitive. Henry won't take eons to get back to you. He not only responds quickly to emails, but once your wedding is done, he works hard to get the photos to you quickly. We did a phone interview with him I knew we had to book him immediately. He is the nicest most genuine person and I can't be happier to have found him.
