I was able to attend two events at Onyx recently - the Halloween showcase and the Share the Love…read moreEvent. My friend, Shirley, invited me to both (she was an instructor here at one point), but still attends as a student. After showing some of our friends a clip of her performance, we came for our first drop in class. I haven't gotten to do aerial arts in a long time, so I was excited to go! I was surprised my husband wanted to go as well! The studio is located in a warehouse type strip of businesses in the Sandy/Midvale area on the west side of I-15. The space is very spacious and used for performances/events as well (seating tends to be tight during the events, but still so fun to attend). Signing up for classes is pretty simple, and can be done on the MindBody app/website. Classes are pretty affordable compared to other aerial studios (and gyms in general that offer drop in classes). We ended up doing a first time drop in for the Hammocks 1 class. It did take place alongside a Pole and Silks classes. Our instructor, Kortnie (who was subbing) was great! She was so patient with all of us, explained the combos thoroughly, and came around to make sure we were getting everything. We all had a lot of fun. My husband really enjoyed the challenge an wants to come back to try more classes (as do I, as I miss doing aerial classes - it had been quite a few years for me). I also wanted to mention how much I appreciated that the events Onyx puts on also helps to raise money for scholarships for those who have trouble paying their tuition/student fees and/or to future students who could use these arts. What a fun studio! Thank you Onyx team for all you do!

I've been here twice now and it is so great. I was hesitant at first because it's all so new and…read morepole dancing/fitness is so hyper-sexualized, it can be uncomfortable but this place does everything right. Nothing is outside your comfort zone (emotionally speaking), the instructors and fellow classmates are great, the atmosphere is encouraging and not judgmental. Physically, it will be fairly challenging but nothing too scary - even in an entry level class, you will have people with all levels of beginner ability but you don't feel ashamed when you can barely get yourself up off the floor while holding the pole. I definitely didn't get the "huffing and puffing unathletic kid in the gym class" feeling like I have in some other workout classes (spin, I'm looking at you). Be prepared to be sore in the days after your first class. No joke, I walked out of my first class, thrilled with how much I enjoyed it, but a little bummed that I didn't sweat and get a good workout. The day after, I became intimately aware of muscles I didn't know I had since they were all screaming at me every time I moved. I sneezed and it felt like my abdomen was ripping in half. So, if you are like me and hate working out, do a pole class. You will have so much fun, you won't notice just how hard you're working your ass off until you get home. Another thing - ignore the review complaining about how this gym should have been okay with a student being 10 min late. It clearly says in their policies that this is not okay. It's also a 60 min class. Missing ten minutes is kind of a lot and the lessons teach you moves in order. You also need to be warmed up so you don't injure yourself. Being late is not respectful or safe, so please be on time (or don't get mad when there are some consequences to being tardy). Lastly, this place is difficult to find. Remember it's unit 114. There is no sign and the building it's in is a business complex so it feels like you are in the wrong place. Just look for "114" and you will be all set.

My friend and I signed up for the Pole 1 Technique class with Justin. First, the space is absolutely gorgeous. Its in what looks like a converted school building and the large draped windows and hardwood floor made me feel like I'd walked onto the set of Fame. Super cool! Justin was warm and encouraging and did a great job communicating the fundamentals. I was super impressed by how he explained body movement and hand placement etc so clearly. It was my friends first pole class ever and she was able to learn the pirouette, the dip spin AND the mermaid spin in the first class! Justin was able to give me more challenging modifications and did a really wonderful job of working with everyone in the class at the level they were comfortable. I had such a a fun time and good workout, I wanted to book a class the very next day, but my schedule didn't allow it. Thanks Moxy Movement, we left our vacation with some lovely memories and new skills on the pole. Def recommend!!!

Pole initiation: introduction to pole, so we learned which is our inside and outside leg, get the basic spins and how to climb the pole etc. I recommend this class 100000% if you are wanting to learn pole (plus it gives you in advantage in the other class if the other instructors are doing a choreography with pole) 2. Liquid Motion: very sexy dance moves and how you can incorporate them into whatever kind of choreography because they are so basic but VERY necessary to make the dance pop out and run very smoothly 3. Sex kitten university: this class was fun and I enjoyed learning the dance, basically a class where you can let your sexy run wild! I did have a little bit higher expectations on this one just because I thought we would be learning more of the small details that make a dance sexy, so like where to place your hands or eye contact etc. Would still try it out again! 4. Find your sexy: very sensual dances that make you wanna dance for your partner or in front of an audience. I really enjoy this class because there are some dance moves that you say "wow I can't do that" but by the end of the class you are doing that EXACT same dance move the instructor showed you! 5. Confident with joy (beginner): very high energy class and you always wanna bring the best version of yourself! You have such a workout without actually feeling that you're "working out" . At the end of the class there is a lot of emotion because you allow yourself to be vulnerable but it definitely gives you that boost you need. Overall, I've been going to these classes and I look FORWARD to go to class. Mel and Katie (2 of the owners) are usually present at all times and dancing/teaching you! The other instructors are sooo friendly and open with everyone and have such a positive attitude it gets addicting. Just wanted to mention also that heels are encouraged but not required for the classes other than that the prices are SUPER REASONABLE!! There is literally no excuse for someone to not try pole!

The 1-2 hour commute is worth it because the environment is supportive in a way that fosters intentional community and care I haven't found in other studios. This is done not only by the rules of the studio but by the culture the owners and staff live. I go here when I need a friend, a good workout, or a good cry while stretching and listening to my music. I was terrified and honestly intimidated to try the cool tricks I had seen online, but after coming to my first class, I was filled with hope and confidence I didn't think were there. Instructors and fellow students even break down moves in ways that are comprehensible to diverse learning styles before working with individuals to make sure everybody accomplishes some sort of new skill by the end of class. Days I don't get the full skill by the end of class, I have still learned a plethora of baby skills that give me excitement and purpose to keep coming back. By the second class or open gym session I try the main skill again, I usually get it. I've been mind-blown by the skills I've learned just in a month that I never thought I would be able to do. Needless to say, my confidence has grown, my fitness has improved immensely, and greatest of all, I've made so many new friends. I'm severely grateful for the SLC circus center and would recommend it to anyone especially if you're intimidated but curious. There is a place for you here.

The board takes some getting used to but it really engages your core and left my abs (and legs) feeling worked the day after! It used a combination of barbell weights and the board to test your balance and fatigue your muscles. Great challenge. I bought the Groupon to DASH and did 4 Body Combat classes to start off. Loved them. Great workout, really fun, and good instructors. Also liked the one experience I had with Body Vive. I tried one Obsidian II class and didn't love it. That was the only time I felt out of place, like I'd wandered into a class full of Lululemon dolls. I didn't get a lot of direction or friendly advice since I was obviously new to it. I never really felt like I was a part of their "community," although at least it looked like they had one. I also think that their front desk workers are a bit disorganized/not as well trained as I would have liked. I had girls act confused several times when I went in to have my class pass punched (like they couldn't figure it out), and then I had one girl accuse me of lying and said I already went to an Obsidian class (which was obviously a computer glitch) when I told her I was 100% sure I never did. I was really upset because she was so snotty to me, but luckily one of the owners intervened and said I could take the class anyway. Regardless of my satisfaction with the Body Combat classes, that last experience left a bad taste in my mouth about DASH. I won't be returning (although I had thought about purchasing a membership) and probably wouldn't recommend it to friends. I've been to other places with great instructors and classes that treat their customers really well - I don't need to be in a place that would accuse me of lying and not acknowledge a computer glitch.
