BEWARE! tldr: Stephen charged us $3k to do our taxes and made inexcusable mistakes - had we filed our taxes as he had first prepared them, we would have overpaid by $35k!! I had to spend hours doing our taxes myself to correct Stephen's errors, yet he refused to refund us. $3k to file our taxes seemed like an exorbitant amount for our situation - we are two W-2 salaried employees - but I decided to give Stephen a shot to see what excellent tax service was like because he came recommended by a friend. Our primary motivation for hiring Stephen was for peace of mind and to save ourselves time due to ESPP and equity sales. We made that clear from our very first meeting and repeatedly mentioned it nearly every time we spoke.  Had we filed our taxes as Stephen had first prepared them, we would have overpaid in the amount of nearly $35,000 because he failed to adjust the basis of our equity transactions (something any competent CPA should know to do).  Moreover, we asked Stephen repeatedly if the ESPP and equity sales were properly accounted for and even provided him documentation from the employer explaining in detail how to account for them.  Yet Stephen seemed reluctant to even look at the documentation we provided.  I was frustrated and disappointed in his responses to my emails asking about it -  so I had to spend hours and hours of my time becoming an expert myself.  Once I actually understood the stuff, I was shocked and outraged.  How could he charge us so much and be so careless and cavalier about our finances?  $35k is a significant amount of money.  The ESPP and Option information was on the W-2.  Adjusting the basis is something that he should have known to do -  any CPA in his position should have at least inquired to see if the basis needed to be adjusted for any of the transactions.  If he were unclear on the type of transactions, he should have asked - for the amount we were paying, that was the least he should have done.  But now that I understand this stuff, there is no excuse whatsoever for what Stephen did -- it's clear from the 1099 that there were same day option sales and clear from the W-2 that there were ESPP sales (and it was crystal clear on the "Zero Net Payslip" and documentation from the employer that Stephen did not review).  We got none of the peace of mind or time savings that we were paying Stephen for. Moreover, Stephen's response to the situation was equally troubling. Had he said, "I am truly sorry; this was my mistake. I will refund your fees for this year, and I promise I will do this right the first time next year" -- we likely would have remained clients and given him another chance. But his handling of the situation was troubling. He corrected our taxes after I complained and laid out all the above (so fortunately we did not double pay $35k in taxes), but Stephen acted defensive and never once apologized. I came away questioning not only his competence, but also his character and maturity. read more
