Typewriters ceased being practical, everyday business machines a long time ago. Not too many…read moreoffices have them anymore, and the machines are more likely to be considered antiques or collectibles than no-nonsense tools. But, even so, there a lot of them still out there and they continue to be used and sought after by discriminating Luddites. So somebody's got to sell them, repair them and provide sundry accessories, like ribbons and such. Typewriter Service Center occupies a tidy shop on Mishiwaka Avenue. It's run by Kevin Kapitan, who took over from his father, and under father and son it's been in the sales and repair business for a long time. The store has that well-worn, lived-in feeling that a good shop run by one person always has. The emphasis is on practical, late-model machines like the IBM Selectric that a friend of mine recently purchased (and got a very good deal on, too), but I also saw a beautiful, old black Royal manual typewriter on the work bench in back. Another Royal -- a spiffy red and white manual -- was on sale out front. The proprietor is keeping a lookout for a vintage 60s-era Italian Olivetti that a friend of mine wants to give as a gift. I guess it can't be easy times for typewriter sales and repair places these days...But if you're in the market for the business they offer, this looks like an excellent place to buy a machine or get an old one cleaned and repaired.
