Took my Nikon Mountaineer II binoculars in to get the center pivot point repaired and nothing else. They were crystal clear just the pivot point was floppy. They couldn't fix the pivot point so they opened them up and said they reset the prisms and tried to tell me they were never filled with gas. I bought them for elk hunting because they were gas filled so as not to fog up. You can look them up for yourself and see they were gas filled but now they're not so they will fog up internally when cold and the sun hits them or on extremely humid days. Now I have binoculars that can't be used for what I bought them for. Very dissatisfied with the way they do business. Won't be back to them. read more

I brought in a camera and was told it was a simple fix. They took money up front but could not fix it and refused to refund the money. The issue was the screw from the stand broke off in the camera. They tried to drill into the screw and even damaged the thread on the camera itself. So the camera is worse than it started and I had to pay for the privilege. read more

I unfortunately need to update my previous five star review of this business that I wrote 6 years ago. This place has gone seriously downhill since then. Perhaps they have a new owner? I'm a professional photographer in my retirement after a career in electronics. Advance has always been more of a "Prosumer" retail business and you didn't see a lot of professionals doing business there in recent years. Advance was my "go-to" local camera store ever since I went digital 20-something years ago. They used to be a good source for used and consigned gear, general information, camera lens and body maintenance and repair. They also sold new gear although their inventory was always sparse. Over the years they have pretty much gotten out of the new camera and lens retailing business. You were able to buy from them through their web site but I never saw any advantage to buying that way versus using one of the three major online camera retailers or going to Portland and buying there. But until just a few years ago you could usually find interesting lenses for sale used or on consignment. That inventory is pretty much non-existent now. My "go-to" guy there for many years was Jayesunn. For me he pretty much was Advance Camera. Very accomplished photographer. Excellent instructor. Knew his way around cameras and lenses and did a lot of the sensor cleaning and repair work. If you had a question related to gear or photography in general you could count on him to be very free with his knowledge. Hadn't been to Advance since the zombie apocalypse started. My workhorse camera started having dust spot problems so I figured it was time for a good cleaning. I was seriously disappointed to learn that Jayesunn was no longer working there. So I exchanged a few e-mails with Adam and made arrangements to bring in my camera a week later for an appointment to have the cleaning done that day. I show up at Advance and this arrogant, condescending, rude and totally unhelpful Adam character treats me like something that just got stuck on his shoe. Does not recall our conversation because "I talk to a lot of people" and "we have a lot of customers". The fact that I've been one of those customers for over 30 years seemed to go right over this child's head. Your camera will be ready in 3 to 4 days he says. Excuse me? I made an appointment 10 days ago to have the work done today. Sorry, he says. I don't recall the conversation. I talk to a lot of people. Already I clearly see that this isn't going to go well. I'll spare you the several other insults and rude comments Adam threw my way so that this doesn't come off as a diatribe. So I come back that afternoon to pick up my camera and ask if I can speak with the tech who did the work. "Why do you want to talk to him?", Adam challenges me. Because I'd like to know what, if anything, he found. We go back and forth for a while and Adam finally states that the person is not available. "No" and "he is too busy to talk to you" are words that shouldn't even be in his vocabulary. Adam is apparently too dense to grasp that the customer (me, in this case) is the reason he collects a pay check. Well, I used to be their customer.... now I'm his competitor's customer. OK.... so this Adam drone has had a lot of fun pushing me around so I ask if the manager is there. Adam states that he and the other teen-aged drone at the counter "more or less run the place". I ask again. You work for someone here, right? He tells me to call to store to talk to the owner. I'm in the store right now you imbecile. Back and forth some more and he hands me the owners business card. Dave Sleeth is the owners name. I don't recognize the name. So I head home and e-mail Mr Sleeth and convey that I'd like to talk to him about my experience at his store and will give him the opportunity to respond before I post my updated review. Nothing heard. Which pretty much explains why I was treated so badly by this minimum wage counter clerk who knows less about photography than I know about brain surgery. So, dear Yelpers: Advance Camera is now so radioactively toxic for me that there is no power that will ever get me inside their store again. Those needing gear, repairs, training or whatever have several far better local and on-line options. And if you happen to be new to photography, this is *NOT* where you want to go to build that new relationship! Used to be when you walked into this store it was wall-to-wall customers waiting to buy. When I showed up to drop off my camera the place was a ghost town. When I came back that afternoon there was one lady there having her little toy point-and-shoot camera looked it. No surprise to me why their business revenue is taking a nose-dive. It is my expectation that this place won't remain in business much longer since the new employees are disinterested jerks who have utter disdain for the customers and the owner seems to be MIA. read more

I took my Canon M50 here for a cleaning and was happy with the results. The On/Off switch was stuck a bit, apparently due to some sort of sticky spill, and they were able to clean it so I didn't have to worry about the switch not functioning as expected. They also cleaned the camera's sensor and provided me with a before/after photo which showed all the dust they were able to remove. That was a welcomed surprise! read more

Had done business with the shop prior to 2021, wherein I took in two items for consignment. Short story is that a year later, the shop had no knowledge of the items, a lens and a tripod, even though I had their consignment document. After several visits, I was finally given a check for the lens, but for only half of what they gave as the bottom line for it. The tripod? "We'll look into it!" Needless to say, I've never heard from them. After six months, I've given up on ever seeing the tripod or a consignment check. Very bad business. read more

These folks are the best! After my Sony NEX-3N took a nasty fall (no thanks to my wild 5 year old), I figured the camera was done. I brought in my camera this morning (my two crazy boys in tow) for some diagnostics. After one of their friendly Techs took a look at it, he found the camera to be in good health, but the lens mount was finished. They did not have one in stock, and recommended a few other local businesses that might have one. When I asked how much for the diagnosis, he said there was no charge. Not only did they not charge me for their time, but entertained my boys with a specially set up kid zone with books, puzzles, and old cameras. My boys were enthralled with the different cameras . . . and they didn't drop them : ) Thank you to the folks at Advance Camera - when my boys are a bit older, and stop breaking nice things, I will surly come back in to get a new camera from this camera shop. read more

Incredible service here. I brought in my lens to find out what was wrong with it. They were able to diagnose the problem (focus moter/gear dead, not from anything I did wrong just overuse from 8+ years with this as my primary lens) and walk me through my options. Will in particular was very helpful debating and discussing with me what made the most sense for my personal circumstances, repairing vs replacing vs upgrading. He showed me links online, and even printed out details for me and wrote notes on them. He did a great job of explaining things in laymen's terms, weighing my options, and really taking care to listen to understand what would work best for me and the photography I do and my budget, without pushing any agendas on me. I came in in not a great state, concerned about my camera, and he was very reassuring. He checked out my camera body while I was there to make sure there was nothing wrong with it, either, and was complimentary of how well-loved it is, but also in great shape for a 10-year-old camera body, and was very nice about how well I've taken care of it, which was also reassuring. This was something I was very stressed and upset about, and the relief and comfort I found after Will's kind service and expertise were incredible. I called twice after leaving the shop, a week later, and was also helped on the phone by I believe Alex and Simone? Both were also helpful following up with my previous conversations and providing a confirmation/second opinion on what I had decided. Very grateful to this shop, I will definitely be back! My Tamron 18-270 Lens had a loose screw and jammed. I called this place, Dave picked up and provided a short analysis, and he said to bring it in, because he thought the lens was worth saving. I came to the store, showed the Lens, he took it inside, and 20 min later, he came providing the analysis. The screw jammed, but he was able to make it working without removing the whole lens (it would have cost $140). He cleaned up, fixing all the outer parts, reassembled the lens. And he charged nothing, i was blown away of both his expertise and generosity. Further he helped to prep for my future lens. It was a very pleasant experience, worth the driving, and i would always go to this place for future camera/photography needs, and highly recommended this to everyone. read more

The staff seems friendly, but unfortunately that's about the only good thing I can say. On Feb 25 I put a deposit down for the part that needed to be ordered to repair my lens and was told the part would be ordered asap. Kindly, they offered to let me hold on to my lens and continue to use it until the part arrived and then they would call me at that point so I could bring my lens in for the repair. Seeing as how the pandemic was still going, I decided to give it quite some time for the part to arrive. On March 20, nearly a month later, I still had heard nothing. So I decided to call. Coincidentally, I was told my part had happened to arrive that very day (a trend I would notice throughout this process). On March 23, I brought my lens in so the repair could begin. The person at the front told me that I had timed that well because the part had just come in that morning. I said I was told the part came in on Saturday. He said no it had just come in. So clearly I wasn't being given accurate information. I asked how long the repair would take and he said a few days. Naively, I assumed that would be accurate. On April 3, (a week and a half later) I still had heard nothing. So I decided to call and see about the status of my repair. The person on the phone said that the technician "had it in front of him and was about to start and it would be done by the end of the day." He said I would receive a call when it was done. I bet you can guess, but no, I got no such call. It's been a month and a half and my repair hasn't even started. And I apparently have to call them every day to check in on them and remind them of the work they agreed to do for me (work that I've already put a deposit down on). The staff seem friendly in person, but if you're looking for professionalism and accurate information, this is not the place. I'm just hoping I get my lens back at some point with the repair complete (hopefully in less than another month and a half) I'm very, very, very disappointed. read more

A lesson: Do you have dust in your DSLR? Are there specks in your images? Floaters in your viewfinder? Do you know how to remove your lense and activate the mirror to retract? Do you have good light and sharp eyesight to see the specks on the sensor? If you answered "Yes!" to all of the above you may be someone who takes the next step and looks online for instructions on "How To Clean Your DSLR Sensor." If you then most mindfully avoided all the caveats and warnings and desperate pleas to NOT do this yourself, and to take it to your local camera professional for cleaning, then you did what I did, the sensible thing, turn around the suck to blow on your garage shop vac and have at it. Well, actually, I was quite "careful" and used gas from a computer dust blaster which removed one of two noticeable specks. A second more determined speck (which actually could not be seen in a normal photo) would not blow off. I opened up my nearly new $15 clean any lens kit from the cheap camera store, pulled out the lens cleaning swab, and poked at that last nasty bit. Feeling content and smug, I refitted the lens and took a stopped down shot of the clear blue sky. Opening the photo was a shock. My stomach turned. My vision paled. The sound of the radio in the background faded to a rushing sound of water falling. The clear blue sky I could still see out my window was, in my photo, the image a raging dust storm. There were hundreds of random spots and tracings of the path of the lens swab. This was a time for mindful contemplation of the nature of life: of its cravings, expectations, and a natural outcome which leads to dis-satisfaction with a material oriented life - a wistful thought of joining a mountain top Zen monastery. This was a time to put to rest the plans to buy a new prime lens at the end of the month. That money could be saved for a new self cleaning, water saving toilet that might help save the planet. I knew I could learn to be satisfied with my $98 Panasonic Lumix that takes 10 seconds per shot, and a good 1/4 of them have some actual sharpness of focus and accuracy of exposure. All that passed, and more. Then I got in the car and drove out to Advance Camera. They listened to my full confession without a smirk of "shame on you!" or even a hint of "here's another one for the dummie of the day blog." They carefully examined my camera and simply said, "A lot of people make this mistake. Most likely we can fix it 100%. It will be a flat fee of $40, and that will include a detailed cleaning of your complete camera. We will also update your firmware to the newest version." Too good to be true? Perhaps other people's idiocy can be so easily fixed, but not not mine. That is for certain! I was sure of soon getting a call for authorization to spend $200 for a new sensor, plus labor. Instead, a phone call was left 2 days later with a simple message - your camera is now ready to pick up. Yesterday I picked up my camera. I was shown a before and after test shot. Before was horrid. After was crystal clear. Spotless. Perfect. The camera looks like new. That's it. That is my review of Advance Camera. Some things are worth spending $40 on. A professional cleaning your DSLR is one of those things. read more

I have a small point and shoot camera repaired by a mail order company in LA. They left out a few screws and other items, like leaving open a passage to the circuitry through the tripod portal, I didn't notice at the time. Based on a Yelp review, I decided to try Advance. They replaced the three tiny screws for $2 each, on the spot, including labor. Unheard of! They have photo supplies, and a large selection of used cameras and lenses. Most are the quality lines, Canon, Nikon, 2 1/4, unlike the very random and overpriced selection at some other Portland vintage photo stores. I'm somewhat an optics geek. Advance was very knowledgeable about lens design and the good vintage designs. Zooms are filled with tradeoffs. I actually profiled mine on a lens designer friend's optical bench and it specs out. That Advance would actually know that lens line demonstrates their deep knowledge. You can get adapters to fit cool old lenses to modern cameras, better quality at a much cheaper price (though not coupled to the automagic focus and aperture camera features - strictly manual). Their customer service is great, unlike the surly customer service at the other well known vintage camera and typewriter shop. It's a Portland family business. read more

I purchased a Nikon D750 from B & H Camera. I was so excited when it arrived, that I pulled it out of the box and immediately drooped it on the concrete floor. After a few days, of sobbing, I took it to Advanced Camera. They took the time to show me everything that was broken and gave an estimate to repair it. The estimate was extremely fair and they started working on it immediately. The best part is they had it repaired and back to me in about two weeks. I needed to have the loose mount on my Sigma Art lens repaired, and repaired quickly. I had tried going to Camera Solutions, but they were going to charge me $24 just to get an estimate for the repair cost, and said that the estimate would take at least a week. All that for just an estimate seemed a bit excessive, so I headed over to Advance Camera. It was a night and day experience! When I walked in, I was immediately greeted with and helped with a smile. I explained the issue, and the woman helping me said she'd have one of their technicians take a quick look. I waited for about 5 minutes, and then they brought my lens back out. I was expecting to be quoted on how long the repair would take and how much it would be, but much to my surprise, the lens was fixed! Even better, they only charged me $20, and it was clear that they were thrilled they were able to help me. I had an issue with my Nikon P900 as the USB port 'sank' into the camera body. After searching around for an expert, I was lucky enough to find the crew at Advance Camera. To begin with, they patiently answered all of my emails and questions very quickly. They always expressed how willing they were to help. I did end up bringing my Nikon to them. Given that I wanted to wait for a diagnosis as I live clear across town from their business, they kindly took the time to give the camera a 'checkup' and diagnosis while I waited. Ended up that the camera would have to be sent back to Nikon and not worth the time nor effort to have it all repaired. I offered to pay for their help and with a smile on their face, they "nope!". I drove two hours from Eugene to this shop because they are really the closest camera repair shop to me. I had taken my camera to multiple camera shops in Eugene and no one could tell me what was wrong with it. I walked into Advance, told them what was happening, and the lovely gentleman took one at it and was like "oh yeah... hold on." He went to the back and returned in just a few minutes. "All fixed" he said. He explained what was wrong, what happened, and what he did. All with no charge. I have been having some issues with picture clarity on my Nikon, I thought it needed a good cleaning (30% off special right now!). I took it in and the man that helped me gave me some pointers on different settings on my camera and explained how the settings I had it on were not ideal for the type of photography I am doing. He said he didn't think my camera needed cleaning at all, just the settings adjustment. I appreciate the honesty and not trying to rip me off and sell me services I don't need!
