My best experience, being a non-union talent, was getting a direct inquiry (not a casting call) for a union contract. They contacted me by surprise for a 1 time successful audition that resulted in booking a union contract as the guest star "Tani's Doppleganger" on Hawaii 5-0 for the last season in 2019 which was a paid speaking role with annual residuals. I'm very happy to experience effortless success. There was a little hiccup when I did not recieve residuals for 2020 & 2021. I visited KMA in person at their new location in early 2021 and thought KMA would have received it as we agreed on the contract since they received the initial payment from the production's payroll company. However KMA rep did not inform me at the time to check the union until after I later obtained information from production's payroll company who only said the checks cannot be reissued because they cleared their bank. But they did not explain who they mailed the checks to in 2021 or where it was cashed. I was on a wild goose chase. Finally in 2022, Joy Kam tipped me to check with the union's residual dept. The productions company confirmed they mailed checks to the union's residual dept. The union confirmed they held it in their Trust and will finally mail me the payment. (Must be nice to let something like this happen as unclaimed residuals build interest in their Trust fund). Being new this, I wish KMA could have been clear when I first came to them in person early 2021 when I received 2020 W2 from EP. If only they could have assisted to ensure they received the checks as they have in the past. ...Dusheartened by this experience. I was on my own to navigate unknown territory while reminded by KMA to pay their commission IF I get the checks. Lesson learned. Know the process, you are on your own to collect and then pay the agency. However, contract states all checks should be addressed to KMA, and it is KMA who issues your pay after deducting comission. You pay GET (unless it is an exported service by HI law you get tax breaks). FYI, Last week I found out that they no longer provide service for comp cards so I'm off to make my own. Regarding free classes... I have to find on my own via IG such as sessions with Katie Doyle, etc. When I inform KMA, they were helpful to communicate the process I needed to go through before I could attend third party events and KMA was helpful to checkin and let me know deadlines. KMA staff is friendly and does regularly provide info/opportunities for a mutually beneficial arrangement.
