It has remained one of my favorite pieces of art all these years later. So when I finally decided I was ready for my chef tattoo, he was the artist I wanted. I was thrilled when he responded to my inquiry with genuine enthusiasm. I could not be more pleased with what we created together. The theme was food plants--but not the food itself--so the piece includes tomato plants, rosemary, chamomile, basil, nasturtium, and some of the critters that live around them. The whole sleeve flows beautifully with the anatomy of my arm in a way that still kind of blows my mind. Later, I asked Kiel to create a memorial tattoo for my father and uncle. With just a few prompts, he designed a vibrant and deeply personal tribute to two of the best men I've ever known. Everything has healed beautifully. Kiel is also wonderful to sit with through long sessions. We end up talking about books, movies, video games, parenting, and the general chaos of trying to be adults in a strange world. The conversation makes the hours easier, and meaningful. He's a genuinely kind human being and an incredibly talented artist. His understanding of anatomy, movement, and color theory makes his work feel alive on the body. I would recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone looking for something distinctive and personal, especially if you're willing to trust a gifted artist to collaborate with you creatively. 10/10. I was concerned about the shop being open due to Covid, but we had been in touch several times since then and there was absolutely no mention of the shop closing. He asked for pix of what we wanted so that he knew what to expect. The last thing he messaged me was "see you June 13 @ 3!" We went to the shop today thinking we were still on. My daughter and I were very excited as we've waited months for this. We got there, the sign on the door said to knock loudly, so I did but...you guessed it, no one was there. I iMessaged him and got a BS canned response of being closed and the county watching them closely. No apology, no offer to reschedule, no nothing. He did not even read my messages beyond him telling me they were closed. Real stand up guy! Clearly customer service is not a priority to this place. It's a crap way to run your business. Anyone who follows them on FB knows that they have been inking people. At this point, I hope they do get busted. There are plenty of tattoo shops in Lancaster County that could use your support. That's as much as I had vetted him going in... To:dr: I will return due to the quality of the work, the vision and artistry he brings to his tattoos, and the consultation he does to make sure the final products are what you want them to be. Full backstory: I've had a tattoo for over 15 years that I hated. An ill conceived Japanese dragon had been made worse when I gave a different artist free reign to rework the design, and the resulting concept just wasn't me Finally went in to consult with Bill and he asked what I was looking for. I told him that, knowing how hard coverups can be, I was considering maybe an armor, biotech, or solar system tat could fix it. He looked at it and said he could fix it a lot of ways... what had a wanted if I could do it from scratch? So I told him I'd always loved the idea of a full Harry Potter themed sleeve or half sleeve. He asked me to put together some ideas and send them over for him to put together and make it art. So I did 7 months later and four sittings in, and my upper half sleeve is complete and the lower half is in design. His work ethic is phenomenal, he takes great pride, and his finished projects are stunning. Thanks so much! Hell, when we have to move away from the east coast we will undoubtedly make trips back to Wilmington to get tatted up again because we just don't trust anyone else now! While we've gotten tiny easy tattoos on vacation at other places, we will NOT go anywhere else for our more complicated and detailed tattoos. The artists we've used (Verb & J-Rock) just understand their clients. We explain what we want, we provide pictures, and they give us back a masterpiece. It's obvious they understand their clients' unique personalities and tailor their work to accentuate the vibe you give off (or try to give off.) The final product is always infinitely more amazing than we are able to picture in our minds beforehand. I really cannot say enough good things about this place. Some might say it's "pricey" here; we always expect to pay talented artists well as they deserve it and the finished product is more than worth it. If you're nervous about your new piece of art and want to ensure you're getting exactly what you've envisioned (actually better), go nowhere else other than Northern Lights.
