Espy is mostly a women's clothing store, but if you're into denim, they have a wide selection on the men's side. I found store staff to be funky, friendly, fun, and helpful, offering as much personal space as I needed to contemplate any possible purchases. They also offer "closet intervention" services, which considering my casual (and sometimes baggy and color-bending) clothing choices, would most welcome. But only under Gayle's supervision. :)

I bought them last week using a groupon I'd purchased months ago. Always love going in there to see the new stuff as I'm not really a "fashion" guy but really appreciate their help. I'm not always sure what will look good on me based on how it looks on the rack. Megan and Adam are always really helpful and I end up with stuff that I really like. This past spring I called Megan to tell her I was heading to Paris and was having trouble finding a wool pea coat. She told me that they had just been in London and she put her boyfriend in a 7diamonds coat that looked great. She showed me the pictures on the website, ordered it in and I had it in my hands 3 days later. Now that's service. Espy definitely isn't the cheapest place in town but I'd gladly spend my money on quality things that I really like vs cheaping out on just ok ish stuff that I end up not wearing. I can usually expect to go in there looking for one thing but finding others too. Today I was just going to pick up the hemmed jeans but ended up leaving with a new pair of Steve Madden shoes. This is the kind of place your stylish, arty, fashionable aunt would shop. The one who looks a little younger than she really is, who holds art exhibitions and skews a little eastern on the house decor. So they have tons of cool stuff, cut for more mature bodies and that veers to conservative with higher necklines and long sleeves. They've also got quite the collection of higher-end jeans. Anyways, as with all places like this, there is always something to find for us younger gals. Some of their pieces are ageless, timeless and always gorgeous. Their prices do run in the moderate to high range, but some of this stuff will last you for years!

But recently I walked by and saw a really nice party dress...perfect for the holiday season. I was in a rush though so I noted the dress and came back about a week later on a weekend. The dress was no longer on display but I found it easily enough on the rack. They had a few sizes left and thankfully one that looked like it would fit. No sooner did I have the dress in hand, did a sales woman offer to start a fitting room for me. A little pushy but after that she didn't bother me so I can't complain. I quickly glanced around the store. There was a lot going on and most of the styles I saw weren't my thing. I think they cater to a slightly older crowd (late 40's/50's +) (they did have a cruise wear section). They also have stuff that I'd consider to be a little more whimsical/unique in design which isn't my personal preference but I could picture some women I know who would love the clothes there. The dress fit perfectly (yay for in-change-room mirrors) and I made the purchase...at just a little over $100 it was a good deal on a party dress in my opinion. The girl on the phone said come right away or we will have to charge you a storage fee. I thought this a bit bold as they just told me it was in. Upon arrival I watched the girl take it out a plastic bag to put in a garment bag. I said to her wow you didn't steam it? It looks like its been sitting in a ball on the floor. She ignored my comment. She folded the garment bag in half and said make sure to unfold it to hang so you don't get a crease. I laughed and said don't think it could get creased then it is! I sent an email to the store when I got home thinking that this was a mistake that they didnt steam it. (there is a steamer sitting at the front desk) They replied they sell too many dresses and just unpackage them upon arrival. I have been to many stores and never had my garment look like they just unbagged it from shipping. Even cheap stores in the mall dont sell cloths this way. I spent a GREAT deal of money on this dress and expect it to come looking nice. My daughters friend got given the wrong size, I can just imagine the nightmare they are going through. The clothes there I am sure my mother or aunts would like; there were an assortment of mix and match sets but at one point I wasn't sure if it was a second hand store. There is a slight smell in there that made me feel they were selling used clothing. But nope it was a store with new items. The articles are so expensive for what they were and even though my mother and aunts are doing well financially I don't think they would spend that much for the clothing there and they have great taste. Calgary's East Village is an up-and-coming neighborhood. That includes the retail outposts like Liz & Lottie who have staked their success on their stylish taste and the promise of a lot more foot traffic past their shop. I wandered on a recent Friday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed this version of retail therapy. Liz & Lottie is more geared perhaps to those who are "sugar and spice and everything nice", but for folks like me (e.g. snips and snails and puppy dog tails), there some interesting things, plus loads of gift opportunities. I also enjoyed their nice selection of local and Canadian items and their good taste in selecting and displaying their wares. My super stylish and in the know sister in law has been finding awesome gifts at Liz & Lottie for everyone in the family since they've opened and I have been following them on Instagram to keep tabs on the new items coming into the shop. The two owners are super kind and helpful, I've messaged them on Instagram with shopping requests/items I am looking for and they have sent me back pictures of products they have in store that match the request -- how nice is that! I often visit on my lunch break as they are tucked into the East Village at the bottom of one of the high rises but it's easy to get there either from walking through the river walk, taking the train to the end of the free line then going for a short stroll or driving right up there. On this visit I walked away with gift for four upcoming events! A sassy and slightly inappropriate valentines card for my husband, a baby shower gift, a gender reveal party gift and a birthday party gift. Trust me I could have kept shopping! Great place to find all sorts of treasures including local and Canadian makers which is so great to see.
