Or just a barbershop that can cut Black hair. I always get a bunch of recommendations for overpriced barbers who take FOREVER to get a fade and it's mediocre at best. In their defense, my hair isn't 100% Black, so many Black barbers can't get a tight fade and non-Black barbers don't know what to do. Until I found Excel. From the moment I walked in, I knew it was different because they designed the barber shop to be very inviting and relaxing. Very modern setup with phone charging stations, flat screens and great music playing. Most importantly, my haircut. I had Xavier who was super friendly and is the owner. I showed him a picture of what I wanted and explained the issues I've had with other barbers and he got to work. The cut was PERFECT. It didn't take too long, he didn't talk too much, everything was perfect. I've been there a couple of times and I know the other barbers there are also great. So glad I found this place!

I also like the barber vs cosmetology training that many have. The average: for what it is, facility build out/decorum of staff/establishing a brand identity, I'm a little confused. It's most certainly a "step up" from strip mall "name your chain" cuts, but much of it is resemblant of the aforementioned. The not-so-great: I could go to most Naperville salons and get the cut and most other services for about the same amount (less the membership, but certain that my stylist has a great deal to do with my retention of membership). That said, at a "chain" I would not have the same attention to detail and stylist availability. The experience at most higher end salons would likely be more relaxing, primarily because of the interior fixtures and feel, and without the membership option, a cost neutral. Bottom line: great stylist in my experience, attention to detail, average facility, do it if you seek the same person for each service and feel comfortable with a membership.
