He took over an hour to measure everything and sent me the lumber quote he received so that I was fully informed, then we talked labor. He would point out problematic areas (like rotting framing) and would ask me if I wanted to have it replaced rather than just covering it up with the new surface. He did an amazing job that had my mom's tenants and the neighbors complementing the work and I felt the price was very reasonable. Based on that job, I brought him out to take a look at my townhouse to possibly replace the siding and he suggested sanding, priming and painting instead due to the price of replacement. They sanded almost every square inch of it, primed it (in some areas twice) with a peeling paint primer that is like glue to fill in gaps and keep the rest of the old paint from peeling, and then put a double coat over everything. When they finished, I was surprised to find that they had power washed our patio, porch, and front half-height fence and even painted the fence though we never talked about doing any of that work. I felt compelled to pay him extra. Deck Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wELQYf0YGKY

The stairs also had to correct a serious water runoff issue. The work was exceptional. The Mottern team knew what they were doing and finished on schedule. We are very pleased with the results and plan to use Mottern Masonry in the future to maintain our large "hardscape" that covers the back and side of our house.

We are so over the top pleased with the business exchanges we've had with the owner, Jeff Mottern,…read moreas well as with his office manager and the entire crew. Our slate walk was replaced four years ago by Mottern and the crew. Our porch did not match the vibrancy of the walk that Mottern put down. That had been done a good 25 years ago by another company. It was a flat gray, and it was fading and developing unsightly pivots, it was not attractive. Jeff came over to access something on the walk, because he really does honor his five year warranty, and we started talking about the porch rehab, and from there the magic began. As you can see Jeff ordered the same bluestone slates that were used on the walk. Now the porch matches the walk and entire area glows with a new vibrancy that thrills me every time I look at it. On dealing with the company. Jeff is the most responsive company owner I have ever dealt with. Honestly, email him, and the next second he is responding. A totally rare and unparalleled quality in a company today. He is friendly, listens to what the customer is saying, and uses his years of experience and design skill to come up with the perfect plan to execute what the customer has in mind. The Crew: I can't say enough about the crew. They always arrive with a smile and good cheer, a commitment to focusing on the project as if it were their own home. The commitment to detail is astonishing. Each crew member has the skill set to execute the project to perfection, even throwing in some well received advice that the customer might not have thought about. Most of the crew has been with Jeff for years. Some for over 20 years. They are savvy, honest and keep the work site clean and tidy at the end of each day. I enjoyed peeking outside to watch their progress. They were able to install our new porch without damaging our existing siding or the support columns. This left us with no repair work! That was a bonus! A footnote here: Four years ago when we did our front walk, we also had Mottern provide us a back patio. Jeff designed it with creative curves and appeal, instead of a simple square design. We used the stamped concrete method on the patio, which is still beautiful and we use it every day!!! The stamped concrete was made to mimic slate. Mottern can also mimic brick, but we wanted to reflect the front walk.

Very disappointing experience, especially given their high rating…read more We signed an agreement with Blue Collar Scholars at the end of June for a new front and back fence and paid several thousand dollars toward the project. We understood that permitting could take time, particularly because our home is in a historic district, and our contract did not guarantee a completion date. My issue is not that the permit has taken time, it is how little they seem to have done during the time they could control. Before hiring them, my wife had already attempted to submit the permit application herself. It took her about two hours to put everything together, and the application was returned because an architectural drawing was required. We gave Blue Collar Scholars all of the paperwork from that attempt when we signed, so they knew exactly what was needed. Yet throughout July, we were repeatedly told they were "gathering documents" and "finalizing" the application. The architect they work with didn't come out to take measurements until August. Since coordinating their architect is within the contractor's control, we cannot understand why this wasn't done in July while they were supposedly "preparing" the permit application. It is now September 29, more than three months after signing and paying the deposit, and we have no fence and no approved permit. We've now been told there were comments on the application and that installation will take another 3-4 weeks AFTER the permit is approved. I don't blame them for DC permitting delays or historic-district requirements. I do blame them for failing to use the time efficiently and for providing vague, noncommittal updates instead of clearly communicating what was actually happening. After more than three months and several thousand dollars paid toward the project, having no fence and no approved permit is an extremely frustrating experience. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Blue Collar Scholars.
