Booster shots given and with a clean bill of health, we finalised the necessary payment and commended Dr. John for a great consultation. The reception is usually manned by one staff who is well trained and I was extremely happy when she displayed knowledge on booster shots for adult cats. Clean and spotless premises with a great doctor and friendly staff on board.

They didn't have heaps of little/young puppies and these were the only 2 we really liked. So a lady that worked there opened the cage and let us go in with them. She came up to us stright away and was so inquisitive. So we decided to get her. Well apparently since we had a dog already we were required to go home and get our existing dog and bring it up to the RSPCA to be put inside a larger enclosure with us AND the new puppy we wanted. If all was ok THEN we could buy the dog. Well all went well and we walked out with a new puppy :-) Considering you get a desexed and vaccinated animal, and in fact mine was even microchipped (which also saves money on dog registration each year with my council) it is really cheap as there is a set price for a dog, cat and rabbit. So it doesn't matter which one you choose or what breed it is, which is great. They have an excellent website where you can view pets they have available at the shelter. They also have boarding kennels and a cattery if you have to go away. I even noticed a horse in one of the area's this time I went.

Some weeks before someone recommended Walkerville Vet if I ever needed one. It was 12.15 on a Saturday. I phoned they close at 1pm and were booked. Told them about George's eye and was told to bring him in. Saw Claire, she was wonderful explained he would need surgery, gave medication to make him comfortable. Claire put us at ease. So pleased that the Walkerville Vet was recommended. Their prices are very reasonable too.

As opposed to some vet clinics I've been to, every vet we've seen here with our 2 dogs has had a wonderful "bedside manner". By this I mean they don't try to get you in and out, but take the time to get to know you and your 4 legged friend. They offer professional advice and specific diet options. The puppy pre school class is well run with the lady running it having a nice disposition and a good understanding of puppy behaviour. I've seen some of these classes run by people who have no place working in a vet clinic. Thankfully that's not the case here. They also have a good range of food stocked, so if you're running low and need some specific food NOW then you'll probably find it here.

I guess it is just like trying to find yourself the best GP. Over the years I have been to many Vet's and I have had lots of positive and negative experiences. I was finally given a recommendation for Blackwood Vets. This was possibly the best recommendation I could have ever asked for. Blackwood Vets have gone above and beyond for my dog. Sometimes emergencies happen. Let's face it, we can only communicate so much to our animals and we do try to avoid problems. But, they sometimes get themselves in silly situations, like my dog Igor. One day he decided that a large rubber toy was food. Unfortunately after eating it, it got stuck in his intestine and blocked it up. We rushed him to the Vet after noticing he was sick and would not eat. After some x-rays and careful observations the Vet said it was best to operate to remove the obstruction. The vet removed the toy and some of his lower intestine. They talked us through each step and not only looked after my lil' guy, but also looked after us after being quite distressed with the whole situation. Igor was nursed back to health and made friends with the whole veterinary team. They even called me late evening to check how he and we were doing post surgery. They took such amazing care of him and treated him as if he was their own pet. My lil' buddy Igor is in full health now and looks forward to see them all when he returns for his check ups. I am so dedicated to this Vet, that I travel quite far now to get to them. I do not mind a drive if it means that my animals receive the best health care. I recommend this Vet to any and everyone! It always felt like you were valued and special here, not like you're a meal ticket or just part of the production line. Blackwood Vets saved my dog from a spider bite when our local vet refused to even consider her symptoms and the nasty looking lump on her could be related. She was a nervous girl, so took many many visits before accepting a liver treat from Mary Ann, but eventually she did. Yesterday my lovely girl passed away in our arms at home. The night before, she was on a drip at Blackwood Vets, and Mary Ann went in overnight several times to check on her. She did everything she could, and made the process a lot easier than I expected. It breaks my heart, but you can't ask for any better care for your beloved pets. I am so thankful we found this place, the staff are all lovely, and make it a friendly atmosphere (including previously inviting us and our doggy to be part of the Blackwood Christmas Pageant!). They have "vets with heart" written on the backs of their uniform, and I've never seen a more true slogan. They truly love animals.

The store is huge with a concrete floor that seems to be very common with large pet stores. If you do decide to bring your best friend in with you, you can give him/her a bath at the back of the store. This is quite commonly used and it's quite cute seeing dogs enjoying their baths. They really do have a large range of stock here, hence the name I suppose. Dog treats can be found at the front of the store, with housing options for dogs, fish, birds etc scattered throughout. You don't have to bring your dog though. I've seen people walk into the store with parrots on their shoulders. I assume these birds have their wings clipped, but the staff are always ready to help with your pet and like to make a fuss of them. It's one of the friendliest pet stores I've ever been to.
