I have coveted genuine floorboards for many years after making the mistake of installing laminate…read morefloating floors a few years back, what a total waste of my hard earned$$$$$ that was. A couple of years ago I started researching replacing them. I went to the chain carpet places, and all the floor places on Magill Road. Most of these places recommended Engineered timber boards, but having been disappointed by laminate I wasn't so certain. True these stores had a range of solid timber, but wow was it pricey, over $200 sq m laid in some quotes. Then one day the lovely "Mr Bracegirdle" from the chocolate cafe, told me all about the floors in his shop and the contact # of his installer. This tradie highly recommended European floors. The showroom is wonderful, the range of timbers extensive and the staff both knowledgeable and helpful. I picked a timber unavailable at the other stores which was extremely competitively priced, they stored it for free for 4 months, arranged reasonably priced delivery. Now this process isn't for people with OCD, I've have 60sq being laid and it will take over a week, but it's looking fantastic and will last for a very long time

Mark Heidenreich is the man to talk to if you fancy one of those gorgeous terra cotta vases or…read moreurns, pot planters or bird baths to sit in your patio area or somewhere in the garden. He is a shy but talented fellow who quietly works away in the yard of his studio shopfront and creates magnificently beautiful items for sale. He has a reputation for delivering on time, within budget and always quality produce. You could go to one of those import shops that bring planter pots from over seas, and the price may be marginally better, but you are bound by what they can provide you with - if you go to Mark, he is making what you are paying for, so you can negotiate subtle nuances on the item - the family crest for example, or the name of the house... maybe you would like a particular shape. What Mark does is create art - so it is in the original art end of the price scale, but have a look at his work and chat to him before you rush off elsewhere and buy something that may not make you as happy as something Mark will create. He is not so expensive it's not worth checking out. He is just not a bargain basement either. The work is very high quality and you may be one of those people who enjoy supporting local talent as well, so consider a visit to his wonderful studio where you are likely to find the character and atmosphere wins you over, along with the man himself, he is a really nice guy.

Anthony De Pizzol is the Managing Director, usually pretty busy, but he will try to help out where…read morehe can if you have specific enquiries about gods and services at Rayners. This is a pretty healthy building supplies venue with many of the things you would require if you were building on to the house yourself. Sand, bricks, they can get in what they don't stock; various renders and cements, some with colour premixed and some without. Plaster, textured coatings, accessories of every description and then all those little things that you require. Sand paper, screwdrivers, tape, OH&S signs. Mini trucks for shipping materials. Paint. I'm tempted to say "You name it they've got it," but I will not go that far just in case you don't get total satisfaction from them as a one stop shop for your building needs. Having said that I think they provide a service polite and helpful enough to be patient enough to have them order things in for you rather than dash of to some warehouse style enterprise. Be aware I have listed the website, because they do have one, but Anthony tells me it is under construction right at the moment and I am writing this in early December 2011, so don't get all testy if you go to the website only to find it is not working until at least January 2012. Testiness after January is reasonable, but I would think Anthony would be a bit testy himself if it is not fixed by then, so maybe just give him a call.

I recently recarpeted a large section of my home. I wanted something hardy because I have put it…read moreoff for years due to all the stuff we had to move, particularly a very heavy pool table, and no way did I ever want to have to do it again if I could help it. I actually found something I liked in a clearance sale catalogue and called Matt at the marion store. After emailing him my house plans with room dimensions he confirmed the price and details and gave me a time for installation. He could even take my deposit by credit card over the phone so I didn't even have to go to the store at all (but I advise you probably should). He again called a couple of days before the install to check everything was ok. Fortunately for us they had made an error in the warehouse and did not actually have our carpet at all, so to offer us the same pile and colour we got a free upgrade by two levels to extra heavy duty. With the heavy duty better underlay our carpet is so soft and springy. I love it! Couldn't wait for the installer to leave so I could lay down and roll around on it - and don't tell me you wouldn't do the same thing! Even without the lucky windfall we had, which is not at all common, the service here is fantastic from the salespeople to the labourers.
