Like many of the terminals we have frequented on our two week Australian adventure, the Adelaide terminal is bright, large and modern feeling. On top of this the check-in and security processes are smooth and efficient and virtually stress free unlike the horrific conditions at most US airports. Here there are plenty of places to sit at the gates and they are not too crowded. Since most people check their bags (for free) there's no mad scramble for limited over head space so no jockeying for position in line at the terminal. Just a group of relaxed people waiting to head out somewhere exciting.

Picture a giant shipping container made of glass and light and filled with the enticing aroma of coffee and awash with a sense and practicality and lack of ostentation that is all Adelaide baby and you've pretty much imagined this airport. My two prerequisites for any building I am in - giant windows and a sh!tload of natural light - are present here in spades, and they reinforce the freedom and optimism that flying used to have before air travel became just another commodity ruled by add-ons and penny-pinching and Ryanair-like scrimping and no leg room. Remember when you could smoke Stuyvesants on planes and bang movie stars in airplane toilets? Those were the days.

One of the nicest airports in Australia, open, airy and light. It is one long rectangular building, international arrivals on the ground floor, other upstairs. Lots of spaces in the car park at all times, level 2 is easiest as it is connected via an air bridge to the terminal building. Although there is a ramp to the departure level, it was deemed unsafe and has been closed for a long time, so drop off and pickup use the same lane and can be busy. Just drive around the queue and pick a spot a bit further down. Check-in is quick and smooth, even on a busy day with the queue commencing at the checking kiosks the one central security screening is efficient and quick. Cibo coffee next to the Virgin departures is fine, and there are a dozen or so shops in the departure hall, including luggage and book shops.

Airports are one of my favourite places ever no matter where in the world. Although I don't have any profound travel quotes like some other reviews, I do have plenty of wonderful things to say about Adelaide airport. In my eyes it is brilliant. Clean, well set out and spacious is everything you want in an airport. The new carpark is fabulous, especially with the lights and signs telling you exactly where the free spaces are. Never again will you have to circle the carpark in a hurry. It's best to park on level 2 so you can take the footbridge straight across to the terminal. The spiral entry & exits does creep me out a little bit but perhaps that is because I'm waiting for Batman to swoop down and attack me, but I digress. It's a short distance from one side of the airport to another so if you are running late you don't have too far to run. If you have time to spare there are plenty of the usual shops to occupy your time from the ever popular Cibo to a South Australian staple in the Coopers bar. Or do what I do and simply people watch, it's far more exciting to see happy arrivals than emotional goodbyes. Safe travels!

I love going to the airport. There is something about it that is so exciting. Even if you are travelling interstate, just the thought of some sort of adventure ahead gets me excited! Adelaide Airport is not too big, but it does have everything that you need. It is really well designed, well lit and open. It is actually a very clean airport too, floors are always nice and shiny, no rubbish about, toilets are looked after well. The signage and gates are very easy to find. No need to feel overwhelmed or confused if you are in a rush. Staff and security are generally friendly and happy to help as well. The security gate and customs is quite quick, but like most airports, you have the morning and afternoon rushes. I have never had to wait longer than 5 minutes at customs. As for seating, at the gates, there is a lot available. But I wouldn't say it was very comfortable. The seats looked great upon installation but now the leather parts are wearing down. The padding on the chairs isn't the comfiest. Maybe it is designed that way on purpose to stop people from falling asleep and missing planes? My overall thoughts of Adelaide Airport, simple and easy. But, Adelaide isn't the biggest city after all!

I am incredibly grateful for the many new international routes in and out of Adelaide so that I can avoid stops through the other larger airports. Adelaide Airport is basically efficient as heck. Everything is clear and well-marked, security lines run smoothly, the airline check-ins are easy to get to and find, and even the additional international bits that Ioathe are as good as they can be. Would have liked to have more than one shop and snack place to choose from after I passed the customs (or whatever that was) but honestly, that was the worst I could say about it. I was still able to find headphone replacements and charge my phone before catching my flight. Win! Also, mad props to the angels staffing the information desk. Parking is easy, drop-off area is mellow, and everyone seems really really nice. Almost felt like I was in Minnesota. read more

Just love this place, Nice, Clean, Pretty, Jetstar Flight Adelaide to Airlie Beach, Smooth. Love this place forever.
Simple and very clean airport. Came in on a Saturday early afternoon. I had already cleared customs in Sydney, so I just headed to baggage claim. Luggage arrived in great time. Followed well marked signs to the local cab stand to catch a cab to the north terrace. A few days later returned for an evening flight back to Sydney. Check in with Virgin Australia was quick and easy. There seemed to be adequate TSA, so no long waits. The terminal branches into two sections. Parts of the left section gets blocked off from entry when international flights arrive. I discovered this when I could see my gate but couldn't get near. An agent at a different gate explained it, and it opened up about 20 minutes after flight was cleared. Even though my carryon size is ok, Virgin Australia made me check it at the gate. It was two pounds to heavy. Wow. There are seven spots to grab a bite. A couple of sit down casual and the rest grab n go fast food. Be careful walking too close to the McDonald's auto menu. Some how my credit card was scanned for a $6 purchase. read more

Charging outlets would be helpful. Basic need these days. Nice modern hand washing in the restrooms, but the first wash I approached wasn't working. read more
My sister lives in Adelaide and that's the only reason I ever visit this place, but I was very impressed with their airport. It is much cleaner and newer than Sydney or Melbourne and it is compact enough to navigate easily. Check-in and security was organized and smooth. Bus transportation to the city is available. read more

Given the size of Adelaide (small), and the fact that I have been to many airports in my time, I think this Airport is fantastic! Clean, easy to find your gate. Make sure, however, that during peak flying times (before 9am Monday to Friday, and weekends) that you allow plenty of time to go through the initial security screening. read more

Once it was nothing more than a few tin sheds, but now it is a typical corridor style airport with some local art thrown on the walls for good measure. Lots of fast food outlets and tourist shops, a twenty four hour service station and some expensive parking. There are some pretty decent airports in Australia, this would be one of them after Sydney, Brisbane and Perth airport... Does not have a train hook up as Sydney does, and the bus service can be pretty poor to get here or get away from here, but it is not too far from the city. I like the view of the hills and the city from the airport and I enjoy the general feel but you do get the strange realisation when you are here in summer that Adelaide doesn't care about your comfort much. There's barely any shade outside in the hottest State of the driest continent where the UV rays are always pretty darn harsh, so make sure you have skin protection; a hat and sunscreen. If you are a peddle powered bike rider, or a pedestrian, gird your loins as they say because you are a second class citizen around here. You will notice the whole facility barely has a bicycle stand to lock up a bike and they do not care about you if you are walking. read more
I love Adelaide Airport. It might be a problem.. like a serious diagnosable problem. I love flying and travelling, but it gets worse. I'm one of those weirdos who will give you a lift to the airport, for almost nothing. A beer or croissant will suffice. I'm not yet the quiet, slightly concerning guy sitting at gate 27 keeping a precise record of how many 737-800s and 737-400s come and go.. I still need to get the a4 ruled exercise book. Borderline mental disorders aside, Adelaide Airport is the best in the country. I've been to nearly every major airport in Australia, and apart from maybe Kalgoorlie airport, no other can beat Adelaide for sheer functionality. Things are a bit more confusing since the upstairs drop off area had to close, but the new carpark and connecting walkway are pretty rad. Bland, but compared to the old carpark set up, a great improvement. Inside is just the best place. Designed to have at least one open glass view from almost anywhere you stand in the building, there's never that feeling of being trapped like you're in a shopping mall (despite all the shops). The shops themselves are pretty decent, a good variety and generally staffed by friendly, pleasant people. It might just be my deep love and fascination with flight and travel, but I swear the atmosphere in the airport is a little bit magic. There's an overwhelmingly positive vibe about the place, something I never experience at other airports. I put it down to the design, where all classes of travellers from business people to bogans in Bintang singlets all use the same security, shops and bars. Even if you're just flying for work, there's someone in the line infront of you beginning an adventure. It all adds to the energy. There's one really important feature most locals forget about Adelaide Airport. Proximity. Recently for the first time ever, I utilised the "jetbus" service a short walk outside the terminal near the hire cars. I had hopped off the plane, picked up my bag and was having lunch in the central markets in under half an hour. And all it cost was a $5 bus ticket. I hope sometime in the near future they improve the methods of getting upstairs. Beyond that, I'm sure I'll enjoy my future visits to Adelaide Airport. read more
Adelaide Airport - because any airport without local live music is just pedestrian. OR Adelaide Airport - the ease is worth its weight in carry-on allowances. OR Adelaide Airport - 5th busiest airport in Australia. You do the math. Any way you slice it, this airport feels more like a boutique shopping mall that happens to have a few gates with airplanes at the end of them. Enjoy every minute of it. read more

Great little international airport Lovely airport, easy to get to, plenty of parking both long stay and short stay. Easy to navigate. Great selection of shops and eateries. Generally helpful and friendly staff. Free Wifi. They have upgraded and in the process of upgrading the toilet facilities which are excellent. Whether we fly in or out long distance or with our local airline we always have good day! read more
Oh Jesus, it's happened. I'm reviewing airports now. *takes a deep breath* I freaking love this place. It's easy to get around, the new car park is like: Harrods is to department stores like Adelaide Airport car park is to undercover car parks. There's real-time signs telling you how many parks are down each aisle - NO MORE AIMLESS DRIVING. seriously, I thought I'd be flown to the future. Now I'm going to get all boasty on you and tell you I've need to a shed load of airports and tell you this is definitely a world class airport. Next up comes my confession: I once came here and I didn't have a flight to catch or anyone to pick up. I passed through security and watched planes. *exhales* read more

Acoustic music on a Friday evening - they're really selling that 'Adelaide is one cool mellow party, even at the airport' and I like that about them. The airport is new and shiny, and from what I could tell seemed to be laid out in one long line, which makes it super easy to navigate. Thanks for inviting me to the laid back party Radelaide! read more
Adelaide Airport is a pleasure to pass through. I'm yet to encounter any sort of wait to check in or get through security, and the range of shops and food outlets is great, as is the amount of comfortable seating scattered around the terminal. I was also impressed at the children's playground - what a great way to entertain bored kids! The pick / up drop off area is right outside, next to a decent sized multi story carpark. read more
Ah Adelaide Airport, the gateway to Radelaide... don't worry you haven't gotten off in the wrong town, this place just sets the tone nicely for a city that has a nice relaxed atmosphere, isn't too showy and isn't really that big. The upgrade on the airport that was completed in 2005 has made a huge difference to the "first impressions" travellers get when arriving in Adelaide, replacing what were 2 tin sheds - seriously no exaggeration here...land with Rex Regional Air and you will realise I am not. There are some good coffee shops and take-away type places with Hudsons, Cibo and Coopers Bar being some of the better options if you aren't one of the "lounge elite." And if you're plane isn't playing nice with you then you have free wi-fi to keep you entertained as well as the good food and drink! The best thing about the airport is that it takes you max 20 mins from the CBD to get to and from and if you're worried about peak hour you're forgetting it is Adelaide. So why the 3? This place is good "for Adelaide" and our population but it is a bit of a nightmare to get in and out of, with limited taxi rank and public pick up/drop off space. It also has limited public transport too and from the airport, as Brad J. mentions. However, this rating may be updated in the future as the new car-park complex and taxi rank is currently being developed and planned for completion in 2014! read more
You know, its not a place you love or loathe to be - its a transitional location for farewelling or welcoming back those you care about. The welcoming back is always a favourite - because making embarrassing signs for people who really would rather I didn't (ehehe) makes me super happy. The layout is ever changing, and they've started adapting the 'zig-zagging' security lines. It moves fast, but I am always amused when they require starting the zig-zag lines, why they don't open up the other two security checks. Oh I know - money. Theres lots to choose from of places to eat or drink at while you wait to depart or for those people you know of to arrive. There's places for beer tasters, coffee indulgers, donut dunkers as well as book lovers, cash exchangers, and wool wearers. Its constantly growing to meet the needs of those passing through the airport doorways. read more

As far as airports go I quite enjoy Adelaide. While not big enough to be a traffic jam, hour long queue airport where you have to be their six hours early, it is big enough to be packed with shops, bars, cafes and food (on the right side of security!) We had wonderful service at the loading bay a man helped with our bags, at the check in desk the lady gave us better seats, at the pharmacy the pharmacist helped us pick out medication for the baby. While they had an area to feed the baby within the female toilets the hand dryer kept frightening her so we just went to our gate and fed there. The gates are spacious and the walkways fast and efficient. I love the new upgrades and it is impossible to get lost inside the airport as the signage is impeccable. Give the staff a smile - they don't want to be swabbing you any more than you want to be swabbed! read more

Ok Brad J, I see your Adams quote and raise you one de Botton: "Nowhere was the airport's charm more concentrated than on the screens placed at intervals across the terminal which announced, in deliberately workmanlike fonts, the itineraries of aircraft about to take to the skies. These screens implied a feeling of infinite and immediate possibility: they suggested the ease with which we might impulsively approach a ticket desk and, within a few hours, embark for a country where the call to prayer rang out over shuttered whitewashed houses, where we understood nothing of the language and where no one knew our identities." Alain de Botton, A Week At The Airport: A Heathrow Diary de Botton puts the whole thing much more eloquently than I can, and sums up an airport's romance and attraction - two things I very much associate with Adelaide airport. I've left this airport (and sobbing loved ones) more times than I can count. And for a confirmed, incurable wanderluster, it's a familiar, welcoming place I associate with either infinite possibility and adventure, or warmly-welcoming friends and family. In short: home. More than that, Adelaide Airport is, comparatively, a realllllly freaking nice airport. Clean and minimal and modern like Heathrow Terminal 5, but not confusing or overpowering in scope. The layout is friendly and easy to navigate. The food and shops are OK, but I never usually need more than a coffee and a book anyway. And I LOVE the fact it has free wifi. So many airports don't, and it absolutely makes a HUGE difference for someone who spends hours in waiting lounges or departure gates. read more

As far as international airports are concerned, Adelaide's is my favourite I've ever been to, and I've seen a few. I like it because the terminal is small and doesn't require a hiking gear or a golf buggy to traverse. I have been bomb tested so many times through security, I'm sure I will soon enough develop a friendly relationship with the security staff. I don't know what it is about me. The airport has all the amenities you would expect in an airport, bars, restaurants, gift stores, news-agencies, and duty free. And be sure to enjoy the horizontal moving floors, I'm not too sure of the technical term, but you stand on them and they carry you in a single direction, Flat escalators! But that can't be the case as they do not escalate... Ugh I don't know, I could Google it but, I don't feel like it. read more

One of the better airports in Australia, if not the best from my perspective. The food is actually decent, there is an array of shops (albeit grossly expensive) to grab any last minute things you may have forgotten to pack and an easy to follow layout. Cibo is definitely the best coffee spot within the airport. They're not fancy but you will get a decent coffee and their food is of a good standard. Villa and Hut would be my back up coffee plan. Whilst I haven't been, I hear that Billie Chu's put on a decent freshly made meal. There's free wifi everywhere and I've always had friendly check-in staff. read more

"It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression "As pretty as an airport." Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (Murmansk airport is the only exception of this otherwise infallible rule), and architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs." - Douglas Adams. Yes, there are plenty of uglier airports in the world. I don't know about Murmansk (I do know how awful Sheremetyevo in Moscow is), but this one is alright. If your idea of what an airport should be like is Kingsford Smith or Tullamarine, you'll be slightly underwhelmed here. On the other hand, if you think that Launceston airport is such an amazing place, Adelaide will blow you away. There's the usual shops, like chemists and bookshops (have you ever noticed how big the self-help section is in airport bookshops?), and taxis aren't hard to find. It's okay. read more
Adelaide airport. Hmm. What can i say? Let's go with the good points first. Clean. Important. It gave me straight up a good impression of the place. Location. Very good. It's only a 15 -20 mins drive to the city. I had lived at a nearby before for a couple of years, and in those 2 years i can even save the money on travel and walked home. Seatings. More than enough Seatings are available at all the waiting gates. I seldom find myself waiting for a resting place. Food. Asian. Checked. Pub food. Checked. Fast food checked. Cafe. Checked. Now let's see what they can improve on. Shops. Or the lack of it. Seriously when they were building the new multistorey carpark i was secretly wishing they will add more shops to it. Apparently not. They added 2 at last count. 1 subway and 1 newsagency. Seats. (Wait. What. Did you just point it out as good point) and yes i did. But most of the seats you find at the waiting areas are NOT comfortable. Travellators. I find this amusing. I think they have 2 or maybe 3 Travellators at both end. At this end of the airport where I'm boarding the domestic flight, there's one only. And that's only available to you after you covered more than half the walking distance already. And the best thing is the Travellator helped me shortened the distance of a total : 1 single gate. Food. (Wait. Again?) Yes. They have the variety but not the numbers. You only have one choice each. Take it or leave it. To be fair to the airport, the traffic in and out of the city isn't comparable to those bigger cities, having less shops and restaurants isn't really their choice, more like a necessity to enable those who are doing business to stay afloat. More competition = less profit for everyone in such a small area. But then I'm a consumer. I spend money. When im stuck at the airport for hours, more shops, more restaurants probably meant that i open my wallet more often than not. :p read more
I'm not sure why I am writing a review of an airport because it's not as if you have a choice of which one to use when you need to make use of an airport - they tend to have a monopoly in that regard. The other thing is that I never really spend all that much time in airports simply because I am either on my way somewhere or have just arrived. Mind you, there was a time when I would always make an effort to have a beer before the flight, but I stopped that habit when the plane to Brisbane was delayed because I wasn't on board (and I couldn't hear them screaming out my name over the intercom, despite the fact that I was sitting in the Coopers Bar). I notice a lot of people have commented on the new carpark but honestly I find it a little odd. It is the only airport that I have been too that you don't run into a taxi rank the minute you step out of the terminal, but rather another twenty odd meters of plaza to cross. It sort of irritates me a bit because I usually like my transport to be right in front of me when I leave. Hey, at least they have one of the cheapest public transport offerings to get you to the city - the price of a regular ticket. Most other airports that I have been to charge you an arm and a leg. Hey, it also has a beer garden. That's another thing I have so highlight about it. It is the only airport I've been to that has a beer garden (okay, Singapore airport has one, but then again that airport has everything, expect for maybe an amusement park, but then again it's been a while since I've been there so I can't say for sure). So, even though my experience of airports are generally the checkin terminal, the security screening, and then madly rushing to the gate so as not to miss the plane (again) there are some things that I must say stand out about this place. Oh Adelaide, you have to be different, don't you? read more
The airport itself is not too bad, nice and shiny, and... pleasant. But I swear to whatever you hold holy, every time I fly here there is a problem getting off the plane because the air bridge doesn't work. Even the pilots seem annoyed / resigned at this, on a couple of the times they've made comments over the intercom whilst apologising to the passengers. read more

I love airports and although I do not go there to hang out as such, I still get excited about going. As a buzzing traveller I have passed many, many airports and Adelaide's is among one of the best. Compared to other international airports Adelaide's staff are especially friendly, and although they remain professional they are not natzies. Like most airports, Adelaide provides that exciting atmosphere one gets when about to travel. The entire layout is modern and kept simple, and for a small city I think the airport is of a decent size. There is also a standard amount of duty free and shopping available. For interstate and international visitors, the Adelaide airport is a breath of fresh air, especially when compared to our previous tin shed. Just be weary of Adelaide's 11pm curfew when booking accommodation. Yes, even the airport staff need their sleep. read more

Well this is where the planes go to and from unless it's something really tiny. Much better now it's fully upgraded. At peak flight times the carpark can get full although I have only seen it absolutely full can't drive in on one occasion. Whenever I have to go to the airport to meet someone or see someone off I always allow a little extra time to grab a coffee and some dreamy donuts (yum) and browse their newsagent. They have so many mags and books to look through. I also love checking out the music store. There's a lot of shops now but not too many that you spend more money at the airport than on your holidays. The facitlites are always clean and the marble floors seem to sparkle. Even if you are flying they have made it easier with chek in kiosks everywhere and bag drop zones so the lines never seem to be that bad to get through. Make sure you take a ride in the lifts with the glass doors both sides that are at the front of the terminal. They are great fun and freak the kids out a little if they haven't been before. read more

Ah... Good ol' (R)Adelaide! It's a modern airport (you should have seen the old one if you never went there... what a revolting place!) and all the mod-cons are here. Everything is in the one terminal - Qantas, Virgin Australia, Rex, Tiger, Jetstar and the handful of international flights that depart Adelaide, so this makes things easy. Security lines never seem to be long and move quickly. There is no McDonalds, but there is a Hungry Jack's (Burger King) and other food and beverage outlets once you are through security. WIFI is free and works well while you're waiting for your flight. There's also a handy pick-up/drop off zone across the plaza from the main doors where people can meet you if they don't want to pay the parking fees. (Head towards the car hire desks in the car park and you'll see where it is easily enough). To be honest, it's probably one of the better airports in Australia to be honest. read more

Fantastic new airport. Well done Adelaide. This airport is a traveler's dream. Landed here 38 hours after leaving Dulles Airport, Washington DC. Airport is very clean. Wonderful white floors. immaculate. Spacious. Well laid out. No claustrophobia. All the shops you need for sundries. Very well designed airport. This is a good example of how an airport can attract visitors and business to a region. A pleasure. Airport coffee is quite good: If you are new to Australia, ask for a "Flat White" -- fantastic national coffee drink of Australia. Coffee shop at baggage claim level is quite good. Checked out the Virgin lounge it is superb. Leaving Adelaide, we had breakfast at a restaurant quite good -- eggs on toast. Good memories in both directions. Good security staff. Overall, Adelaide airport is an enjoyable experience. Having flown all over the world, I don't think those thoughts at too many airports. read more

Out of all the airports I have visited (too many to count) I have to say Adelaide airport is one of the best if not the best. I have to give 5 stars overall - cleanliness, ambience, people, shops are generally superb. It has its own charm and it certainly gives you a unique feeling that you are in South Australia. It is not a busy airport another reason why I love Adelaide airport so much. read more

Specialties
Adelaide Airport is currently the fourth-largest domestic airport and sixth-largest international airport in Australia. It is the aviation gateway to South Australia and processes more than seven million passengers annually. Adelaide Airport Limited purchased the operating leases for Adelaide and Parafield Airports in May 1998, to operate both airports for the next 50 years with an option for a further 49 years.
History
Established in 1954.
Flights commenced from the current Adelaide Airport site in 1954 and the first regular transport services in February 1955. The first passenger terminal was a lean-to on one of the large hangars at the airport. It was not until 1957 that the Commonwealth funded and built what was designed only to be a temporary passenger terminal, however its use for domestic and regional traffic continued until October 2005. Regular International services began in November 1982 with the construction of a separate International terminal building to accommodate an influx of overseas visitors. Construction of the $260 million Adelaide Airport Multi User Integrated Terminal - one of South Australia's largest and most significant privately funded civil infrastructure projects - commenced in November 2003. Terminal 1 was officially opened by Prime Minister John Howard in October 2005, and provides a considerable upgrade on former airport facilities for regional, domestic and international passengers.
Review Highlights - Adelaide Airport
“There's always a car park around and it won't take you more than a few minutes to walk to the terminal.”

Huge fan of the upgrade, best airport in Australia. The new exterior is a little sparse, but will be nice when the trees are larger. Love the Adelaide Airport! read more

Always feel good energy at Adelaide airport. Very distinct from Sydney in contrast. Has a peaceful, clean atmosphere about it.
