I had trouble just getting anyone on the phone to begin with, and as for actually returning my calls or even looking at my resume, forget it. Staffing companies are only as good as their staff people, and maybe I just got the lemon here. But, I did get the impression that unless you were interested in a big job with Capital One, Richmond's top employer, that you weren't going to be at the top of anyone's priority list.

She did not put me forward for anything but contacted me multiple times, seemingly just to bully me. Her tone and cynical questions made it clear from the outset that she had judged me unfit, so why put us both through it? She questioned whether I was really as experienced as I am, then suggested I might actually look for jobs at a lower level than my current job title. She even questioned whether I could update my own website as if I was lying about the technical skill to do so. ("Are you sure you're looking for [x] role, and not a [x] role?" and "Are you *sure* you're *able* to update your site?") The last role she contacted me for was entry-level, despite my having over a decade of experience, so I stopped responding. Anyone who's job-seeking knows how hopeless and vulnerable it can make you feel, well she made it 100x worse. Unlike a faceless rejection from HR, I couldn't shrug it off as "not personal," because her belittling was very personal. I was so despondent following those interactions with Chelsea, that I didn't apply for another job for 6 months. It took getting an interview at IDEO, one of the best companies in the world for creative, to get my confidence back. I had heard it from other people, but after that I finally realized--she's not a creative and she herself doesn't have enough experience in the industry to know what she's talking about. And anyone who's that bad with people should probably go into another field anyway. Rest assured--it's not you, it's her!
