Adarna House features plenty of Filipino books for children all written and illustrated by Filipino authors.
Many of their books are sold in major bookstores in the country. Those thin ones, with cute drawings and are available for around 50-100pesos.
Very affordable and yet, I don't think they are best-sellers, which is a travesty, because a lot of the stories are beautifully written.
One such example is my favorite is Papel de Liha, an incredibly touching book about the beauty of the calloused hands of a mother, written by Ompong Remigio. The story recounts how a mother does a lot of house chores and takes care of the entire family, making her hands feel like sandpaper. And the daughter doesn't at deist appreciate this and even wishes that her mom had delicate skin. Once she realizes she is the reason for her mom having sandpaper hands, she apologizes to her mom and declares her love and appreciation for her.
Children can get a headstart with reading through the Adarna books and it's a good idea to get them acquainted with Filipino works from this publishing house. read more
