Before I begin, I think it's important to note that many couples/brides do not remember that the…read morephotographer is the ONE vendor you will be spending your ENTIRE day with. Meeting with that person is VERY important & really the one chance you have of finding out if you'll "fit" together. If you don't feel it when you meet, he/she is not the one. For us, it was Keith.
First & foremost, Keith was WONDERFUL throughout our entire experience with him. After meeting with other photographers who we didn't really "feel," we were beyond pleased to meet with Keith. Our initial meeting with him in August 2007 was great - he showed us a lot of his previous work (large prints & small) & explained about how he liked to shoot weddings. It was nice to get a feel for how he worked, & understand his style. My husband & I liked his laid back attitude & knew he would be a fun person to spend our day with.
We also liked that Keith specializes in 35mm film, something many wedding photographers no longer do. Having dabbled in (amateur) photography myself I really appreciated this & knew that the quality of our pictures would be ideal. Obviously I worried about the rights to negatives, but there was no need - Keith turns over ALL negatives (film & digital) to you after he gets them printed. This is something MOST wedding photographers will charge you an arm, a leg, & your first born for but Keith truly understands the importance (& ease) of the couple having the negatives at their fingertips.
Our first experience with Keith was our engagement photos in September 2007. It was an awesome way to get to know him and learn how he works (especially for 2 people who'd never really had professional shots taken of them). He immediately put us at ease and after our shots we were excited to work with him again at our wedding. I highly recommend doing this regardless of who your photographer is - it really helped Tim and I feel comfortable with him the day of.
We corresponded more as the big day drew closer via email & he was always prompt (within 24 hours) with his replies. We even went back & forth a few times regarding formal/family portraits & he was very willing to work with our complex families. Through the planning process Keith was also a great for ideas. We hadn't really thought about our wedding day time line when meeting with him, & he provided some great suggestions to make the day run smoother.
On the day of the wedding (June 2008) I was admittedly a pretty calm bride, but Keith & his assistant had me feeling my best when they arrived on time & immediately jumped into taking shots. He had assured me his assistant was great, but having not met her or seen her work I was a bit nervous. Nonetheless, she made me feel 100% comfortable as she came in & starting shooting the "getting ready" process of the women in the wedding party. She got along great with all of the bridesmaids & made us feel very natural as we got ready.
Once the day was underway Keith & his assistance kept up the good work. Throughout the ceremony we never really knew they were there, & when we got the pictures back were amazed at how many moments they captured - of us, our guests, & the beautiful surroundings of where we said our vows. All the little things we missed because we were watching each other. During family portraits Keith was great at "herding cats." Between our huge families, our moms, & the little ones in the wedding party we managed to get all the shots we had signed up for (he had us provide a list beforehand) & stay on schedule (we took pictures on the beach & wanted the light to be right).
Throughout the rest of the evening Keith was fantastic. Our beach pictures were amazing & he had a great eye, catching beautiful scenery & the people in our wedding party. At the reception, he interacted with us & our guests, ensuring some fun & great shots of everyone, but also took some wonderful candid pictures that captured moments we (again) missed. His assistant got some great shots of our decor as well, which again was wonderful because those are the things the bride & groom have little time to soak up. Unlike the previous post, we had no reports of him drinking during our reception & his behavior was nothing but professional & fun (yes, you can be both). The only thing in his hand was a camera.
After the wedding, we heard from Keith within a week. He emailed us with a few of his favorite shots & even said he captured the best exit shot he'd ever taken. Our prints and negatives were in our hands within a month of our wedding (I have friends who waited 6+ months) and since then we've happily recommended Keith to anybody we know getting married. Please be sure YOU (and your future spouse) meet Keith before making your decision. Online reviews can be helpful, but are nothing like meeting somebody in person. I'm happy to answer any questions you have, just message me.
I added some of Keith's work from our wedding, for those interested in his style.
