I had the mango-passion fruit dessert and the flavours were delicious not overly sweet and very natural. I find it hard to come across desserts with true, authentic fruit flavours, so I was very happy to find this spot. The fruit dessert was around $12-13. They also have a great selection of pastries and desserts. Something I wish they had was free water. I didn't think of asking, but since they only had bottled Evian for purchase, it can add a bit to the bill. Not sure if they offer free water, but that's just me hahaha. Overall, it's not a place I'd visit daily since it's far for me, but it's definitely somewhere I'll bring someone who's visiting Ottawa. It's a nice, unique spot for something sweet.

As most of the space is dedicated to the baking and display space which opens up to the seating area. I wasn't surprised to see the fruit looking desserts as they are the rage nowadays (thank Cedric Grolet for providing inspiration). I tried the pear version and a tarte tatin. Tarte Tatin is OK but I am happy you that its at least being offered here in Ottawa. I enjoyed the pear dessert. Very pretty to look at with subtle taste though (if you are expecting a flavor punch this isn't it) light to finish as well. I will be tempted to try other fruit interpretations next visit. The croissants looked as well. I took a few goodies for the trip home. Next trip I will be sure to revisit.

I went in to take a look and ended up buying a salted caramel brownie ($3.25) and a pink cookie with white chocolate chips ($3.65). When you buy anything pink in the shop, 20% of the sales go to Breast Cancer Research (not sure if this is just for the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness month) or for always). The salted caramel brownie was phenomenal! So rich and buttery and filled with gooey salted caramel and chocolate chips. The cookie was good too, nice and chewy with lots of white chocolate chips, but the salted caramel brownie stole the show, for sure! Everything is baked by them, it is not one of those shops that buys stuff from Costco and resells them, lol, like some other shops in medical buildings. I was served by Esther herself, who is beyond lovely. She told me they recently opened 5 months ago and she's really trying to get the cafe more exposure through social media. She noticed my purse and told me she has the exact same one and brought hers out to show me. Immediately I knew this woman has good taste, lol. The cafe is super cute with a few seats to eat in. It's not too visible from the street, so just look for the medical/office building next to the Westgate Shopping Centre. There's free parking along the front of the building. The parking lot is actually quite large, but many spots are reserved for permit holders, so just look out for the signage. Esther's Cakes N Sweets is a gem. I'm looking forward to trying out other items.

The surprise ended up being that the person behind the counter, also master creator of all these totally exquisite delights, was award winning (and absolutely friendly) Pâtissière Sabrina Sigouin!! (That's Master Cake Designer for all us English speakers!) Since it's Sabrina's shop, it should be no surprise that La Belle Pâtissière is super on-trend featuring Pistachio! Should add, my Pistachio Oat Latte was amazing! (Thank you, Sabrina!) Only wish I had more time in Montebello to test out one of those giant Pistachio Ice Cream Sandwiches!!! Will have to save it to next time! That being said, if you're in Montebello, definitely recommend stopping by the sensational La Belle Pâtissière!!!

In we went. I am so glad we did this. It's very unassuming on the outside. Inside it's charming - while aspects of the tea room / restaurant are clearly made with current-day materials, you get the charm of past days with the china, real tea pots and display cases. It's very cute, the tea is excellent and it's a lovely spot to stop by as the days get colder. Like the decor, the food is also, in some ways current day like the rather modern special of the day (a bowl of rise with deliciously spiced chicken and bites of potato). But in other ways it harkens back to older ways with their delicious fresh baked goodies. One thing I appreciated: the servings were right-sized and the prices reflected it. Lunch for 2 with tea, dessert and a 20% tip (service was excellent) was around what I'd pay at a chain for a single meal alone.

On the recommendation of a young girl that we encountered en route to Almonte we decided to try this place with "great pies". It was so much more than that. Charming, quaint and friendly are words that come to mind. The owner and staff were funny and warm and their offerings were world class! We enjoyed fresh, handmade quiche, soup, salads and pie & cake that were to die for. My wife had the decadent butterscotch pie with 20 inches of merengue (slightly exaggerated) and I had THE BEST piece of carrot cake on Earth (no exaggeration). While dining we took up a conversation with a couple of locals who eventually took us on a tour of the town and even welcomed us into their home for a glass of wine. Truly a wonderful day.

After learning that the latter only accepted cash, I checked out Amore Gelato. There was a bit of a lineup, so I knew that it was a good sign. There was a mom in front of me with her kids. We had a nice chat after she specifically said to her kids that they'd get exactly one scoop of ice cream. "We can't have them go on a sugar high and crash," I said, smiling. "Exactly. I'm getting two scoops, though" she said, laughing. This joint offers options for everyone. You can get a variety of gelato flavours that are made fresh every day. Gelato has dairy in it. If you're like me and want a dairy-free option, sorbetto is a nice alternative. I had overheard the conversation between the woman behind the counter and a couple about to pay for their treats: "Is it cash only?" the woman asked. "No, that's the Crazy Moose. We accept all cards and cash," the female staffer said. One word: yes! This same female staffer helped me out with my order. I got the following sorbetto flavours in a cup: - Guava - Lychee I paid with a credit card. I also tipped, thankful that I could use plastic to pay. I thanked her and left with my frozen dessert. There were a handful of little tables with chairs inside the store, but they were all taken. Instead, I went out in the hot weather and found outdoor seating. Luckily, there is a rather large tree that provided a lot of shade. There was also a breeze, so I wasn't sweating buckets. I loved my sorbetto. The guava and lychee were reminiscent of having Vitasoy as a kid. I loved these flavours. They were captured perfectly in the sorbetto, which wasn't all that sweet. The sorbetto scoops were refreshing and enjoyable to consume on a hot July afternoon. There were pigeons that looked like they were innocently befriending me. They were actually waiting for me to make a klutzy move. If I had dropped my sorbetto, they'd feast. They never got any of mine. I finished all of it. So good! It was nice to people-watch as I had my sorbetto. If you have the time to stop and enjoy things in ByWard Market, come here for a scoop of yumminess and savour it. It's a great place. I'd return in a heartbeat. (310)
