I just finished back-to-back Defensive Pistol 1 and 2 with Jon at Acumen Tactical and honestly, I didn't know what I didn't know until this weekend.
This isn't a square-range, stand-still-and-shoot course. From day one Jon is building you toward something real. The instruction is tight, the pace is deliberate, and every drill has a purpose behind it.
The three things that stuck with me most:
Shooting while moving - not just walking forward and pulling the trigger, but actually learning to manage your body, your sight picture, and your footwork simultaneously. It feels unnatural at first. By the end it starts to click.
Cognitive loading - this one surprised me. Jon layers decision-making on top of physical tasks and simulated malfunctions on purpose. You're not just shooting, you're thinking, processing, and executing at the same time. It exposes gaps in your fundamentals fast.
Simulated stress - when your heart rate is up, using cover and determining simulated shoot/no shoot assessments, everything you thought you had figured out gets tested. That's the point. You find out what's actually trained versus what you just think you know.
Also have to give a massive shoutout to Shahane - when my pistol had a malfunction on day two, he offered up his without hesitation so I could keep training. That kind of generosity kept me in the fight and I won't forget it.
If you're anywhere near Charlotte and serious about defensive shooting, stop overthinking it and book a class. Jon is the real deal. read more
