THIS IS THE BEST VEGAN FOOD IN ALL OF EUROPE!…read more and This is the best restaurant in Utrecht! We went with about 10 of us - only a few of us were vegan - the rest are die hard meat and fish lovers. We ordered the wellington, a few burgers, some asian street food, kapsalon, curry and seriously - the meat/fish lovers were DROOLING over how incredible the food is. They couldn't believe it was all plant based. No meat? No problem - the recipes are insane. Their chef worked at a michelin star restaurant in Norway, and his experience really shows in the food here at SNCKBR Utrecht. Also the presentation is SO beautiful. We tried all the desserts - the apple pie was CRAZY good, and the chocolate dish, and the pear and chocolate, holy moly, died and gone to heaven is how you feel. The place was so good, about 6 of us showed up the next morning for breakfast, and then I'm not ashamed to say, we went back for lunch. So, if you want to know what to order from any of the menus, I'm your gal. EVERYTHING. The tofu scramble for breakfast was super super good. The decor and seating is super lush. Everything is styling, hip, gorgeous. Seating is comfortable. You could really cozy up at a table for two for a romantic night of good food, or bring a group of friends and chow down like a star at one of their booths. The service is friendly and we were welcomed by the owners multiple times. They're a young couple with so much love for their place that you immediately know you're in caring hands with people super passionate about food. There's no "vegan feel" meaning you're not getting any sort of messages that might turn off your meat lovers. It's just really, really good food, done super super well, in a cool environment. My favorite dining experience in Utrecht by far. I can't wait to go back.

When the manager came by later to clear the table and ask how everything was, I explained the food was good but we waited way too long for it. He went into the kitchen to get things figured out, then came back to our table to accuse us of making a big deal when it wasn't actually that long. What?! The man asks how our meals were, I respond, and then he aggressively starts saying that we had the timing incorrect (we didn't). He wouldn't let up either, he kept pressuring me as if waiting for me to say the timing was fine. They offered us free drinks after that, but we would have much preferred them taking the drinks we had already ordered (due to the wait) off our tab. (They didn't) I'm vegan and love supporting new vegan businesses but this place's management is awful. The chef is the same one from ACU, who was rude there and I'm sure had a hand in the manager's change of attitude (I saw her screaming at him in the kitchen). It's a shame the only vegan restaurant in the city center is one I'll never go back to. I can forgive excruciatingly slow service, but that level of aggression is never acceptable.

It was plenty of food as it came with beans, a salad, an interesting apple based stew and a kind of Cole slaw. No alcohol is available so I just had tea. The mains were both rice based, one with a nut sauce, the other a tomato sauce. Both tasted very nice. The decor is sparse and simple and it's probably one of the only restaurants I've been too that didn't play any music. It did seem a little expensive for what we got but not outrageous. Not sure what this means but other than my wife and I everybody was dining alone....hmmm.

No worrying about whether or not that piece of "ham" was actual ham or tofu. No stress about finding a very meaty chunk of something in my sateh sauce. And no more wondering about mystery ingredients such as trassi or fish sauce possibly being used in my vegetarian dishes. Soy is just completely vegetarian and there's no mucking about, I love it. What could I love even more about vegetarian Chinese food? Well, besides already having a much wider range of dishes to choose from (over a hundred here as opposed to the same four dishes at any other Chinese of which two are noodles) they also add a lot of extra vegetables to their dishes at Soy. Which really helps to stretch an already reasonably priced take-out meal into a cheap dinner, breakfast and lunch because this food really fills you up. And let's be honest, we all know with Chinese food that we overeat, feel completely stuffed and don't understand how we'll ever eat again but then half an hour later suddenly have this massive hunger and wonder whether we've actually ever eaten any food before in our entire lives and then scoff down the leftovers like a rabid coyote. Well, suffice it to say I've never had that vicious overeating cycle with food from Soy. An added bonus: because I can eat everything here, I aim to try at least one new dish every time we come here. This is how I've discovered that I adore Koe-Loe-Yuk, which are little balls of "shredded meat", battered and fried and then served in a delicious sweet and sour sauce. So yummy and I definitely recommend that you try it too! To sum Soy up: -No worrying about meat or seafood showing up in my meal -Cheaper than it's non-vegetarian renditions -Actually a nutritious, delicious, wholesome and filling take out meal -In case you were wondering, yes, they're also vegan friendly And to close it off, my pro-tip: make sure you bring cash! No cards here but at least there's an ATM at about a five minute walk from Soy and it's totally worth the walk!

Still it took me quite a while to go because it is 1. in Utrecht which is not around the corner, and 2. in is also not in the center of Utrecht so when I am there if often go to another place that is more located in the center of town. Last weekend we were actually on our way to another place but the event there got canceled so we decided to finally go to Soy, since we were by car anyway. That was a good choice! Almost all of their food is vegan, except for a few agg dishes. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant itself is quite small and it is mostly meant for take-away. There are stil about 5 tables though, so eating in is also fine. We ate some delicious food like vegan chicken with cashews, veggies and noodles, nasi rice with brown tofu and sauce and fried bananas. Sooo good! I understand now what all the fuss was about :)

Staff don't bother to find tables for you; they let customers figure things out among themselves. Alright. We eventually grabbed a table after 5-10 minutes, then had our order taken 10 minutes later. The food took a long time to come out: about 40 minutes (other than 1 appy that came out after 20). Good thing it was tasty. We got: -plantain fries (€6) -- tasty, especially with the sweet dipping sauce, but you get about 8 fries, so not great value. -okonomiyaki (€12.90) -- this was wonderful. So many lovely textures, flavours, and seasoned beautifully. This was the highlight of the meal for me. -vegan plate (€18.90) -- really nicely designed plate, with a base of brown rice, with a sort of Japanese slaw, vegan chicken katsu, tempura (apparently, though I didn't notice it), and stir fried veggies. Super tasty stuff. Not the biggest portion, but not bad either. My friends each got the crispy roti wrap (€14.90), which they loved, and the taste I had was great. Overall, great food, not the best dining experience. Perhaps my experience wasn't representative. I'd go back for the okonomiyaki alone.
