I started my karate journey over 3 years ago. My husband and two daughters all decided to take karate. My son was already active in karate for about 4 years at the time. For financial reasons I decided not to and besides I am just a mom and 39 years old. That is CRAZY. After they were all signed up I started to go watch the two older kids take their beginning black belt classes. Then one day Mr. Bittner tossed me a gi and pretty much said if the rest of the family is doing it so are you.....And that's how the journey began.
Having never been active in any type of sport while growing up, I was very hesitant at embarking on this journey. Negative thoughts were all that I had. I am overweight, out of shape, old (in my mind), work full time, a mom, and the list went on and on. I would be nuts to even consider doing this. After much thinking I figured what the heck. It is something my husband, Bill, and I can do together. And wow it was not easy. Getting that first stripe on my white belt felt great! But then things happened. For health reasons, my husband had to drop out of karate so I had to make the decision if I should continue for the next 3+ years alone. I decided to at least try it for a little while longer. Three and a half years later here I am.
It hasn't been an easy journey, but having the support of my family and friends has made it all the more worthwhile. I will admit there were a lot of times that I wanted to quit for which reasons there are many, some of which are known by others and some that are private. It was the encouragement from my family (especially my children) and the friends that I have made at AK that have pushed me to where I am today. Karate has shown me that I can do anything I want to achieve no matter how difficult the road ahead may be. It has helped me live for me again and not just for my kids and husband. It has helped me form friendships with people that I know will continue on after I receive my black belt. For all of this I am grateful.
Yes, I may still be a bit overweight and not in top shape but I am better than I was 3 and half years ago and I know I will continue to get better. I am still 'old' but I have realized that age is only a number and 42 (almost 43) is not even close being at an age that is boring. I still work full time and am a busy mom of three but I now take the time to enjoy each and every moment because I am grateful the life I have. Granted all of this may not have been attained through learning all of the self defense techniques and katas but it is through those lessons and training that I have obtained a clarity and a confidence that was not there in the beginning. read more
