If there was an option to give it no stars or better yet - negative stars. I've worked with a lot…read moreof banks and a handful of credit unions and they all pale in comparison to Members First. First, when I opened my account and I tried to deposit a check so I had a minimum balance and then tried to keep some of it as cash on hand, I couldn't. My check would be placed on a "five day hold" because I wasn't "an established member". I can understand that to a point, but after having established my account almost 9 months later, I wasn't able to cash a check that I got as a wedding gift without it being on a hold. I almost never had access to MY money. Secondly, the customer service is atrocious. If you go in any branch, no one smiles. No one looks like they want to be there and no one cares about you or your account. The telebranch is just as bad. I was told to "shut up" by a representative because I couldn't understand why I was consistently being charged fees when I have enough money in my account. Thirdly, they're crooks. Plain and simple. I've been charged SEVERAL NSF fees for charges that I did not make and they were charged preemptively. When I asked them about it, the response was that even though I seemingly had enough money, I still overdrew the account. How is that possible when I just got paid? Next, the former President isn't the only one who's birth certificate is under scrutiny. I was born in D.C. so I have a birth certificate card that is wallet sized. I needed to change my name after I got married and it has been a constant hassle. I STILL haven't gotten it changed. My [updated] social security card, drivers license, birth certificate, marriage license, and two pieces of mail didn't suffice. The teller asked management and they scanned my papers and told me there was nothing they could do. I finally just gave up because it just wasn't worth it. It was more work than it needed to be. Finally, when there was suspected fraud on my account, I contacted customer service. I was told that since there was a hold on the funds, everything had been approved, so I had to take it up with the retailer. I was still going to be responsible for any NSF fees unless I got a written document from the retailer themselves saying it was "their mistake". The card has a Visa logo, so technically they're held to the same standard as a credit card company would be. That being said, they showed no sympathy for the situation and told me that I was pretty much sh** out of luck. The funds were gone. It wasn't their money. Who cares? I learned that just because a bank is in a convenient location, doesn't make it worthwhile. Apparently going to the bank to cash a check is just the same as having that same check sitting on your desk with no intention to cash it. That unethical business practices are part of the daily business operations. Members first...? You've got to be kidding me. They'd do better to change their name to Fees First. Membership is meaningless, unless of course, you can afford to pay NSF fees after you just get paid. But hey, at least I could put a picture of my cat on my debit card. They have that going for them, which is nice...
