ACME, which stands for the first names of the owners is a new hip pasta joint in Rushcutter's Bay, right next to King's Cross. Mitch Orr, also known as @instakrill on Instagram runs this place with aplomb. Hip hop blasts in the background, the service is pleasant, and the kitchen staff quick. Don't call this Italian food or Modern Italian because it's more so fusion than anything. There are tons of Asian influences in the dishes so don't come here expecting a traditional Italian joint, as many dishes are experimental. You probably want to book, but we were lucky to snag the last two seats walking in last night around 630pm. We started with the asparagus and brown butter, the beef tartare, and a baloney sandwich. The asparagus is blanched just right, and the brown butter is actually more like a salted caramel believe it or not. I was a fan. The beef tartare was more interesting than delicious to me. It wasn't bad, it was just different. The baloney sandwich was awesome. Don't balk at paying $8 for this bad boy because it's worth it. The housemade ketchup goes really well with baloney, and brings back memories of eating something like this as a kid. Just higher quality. We ordered the fettuccine, spring vegetables, black sesame and the lasagna, mushroom, sheep's curd for mains. Big fan of the lasagna, it doesn't look or taste like a traditional lasagna as it's more deconstructed, but I really enjoyed the mushroom and curd. The lasagna could have been a little softer though. The fettuccine grew on me, didn't like it at first as the spring vegetables gave it a very bitter flavour but after a few bites you enjoy it more. I'd be keen to try the linguine next as it looks like a mee goreng. I also saw a lot of the burrata, fennel, seaweed going out, so would be keen to try that as well. Definitely a new and interesting place to check out for the hip crowd.

A celebration Dinner! I have graduated! Hoorah! Finally! So to celebrate we decided to visit the Best Restaurant of the Year 2015...dun dun duhhhh it is ACME! This restaurant is from the same guys who brought you The Passage. For some reason I thought this place may be cartoon based but alas its a different ACME not the one I used to watch Saturday mornings when i was a kid :D To start i got the Blood Orange - Braulio, Prosseco, Sage Cocktail, came with a lot of ice so it felt like a spritzer! It was tasty! Lasted me the whole night and probably because i had to drive i could only have one! Everything is meant to be shared on their menu and all items are small portions, so be warned! All dishes were shared amongst 3 people. Items we ordered for entree & main were: ~Baloney Sandwich ~Burrata, tomato jam, toast ~Linguine, black garlic, burnt chilli ~Rye malloreddus, cherry tomatoes, pesto ~Spaghetti, pippies, bottarga And of course for dessert they only have 3 options so we ordered them all! All $10 each ~salted caramel swirl, cookie, ice magic ~Coconut rice cream, white Chocolate ~Pine nut ice cream, rhubarb, cereal Highlights were the Burrata, Linguine & Spaghetti and from the desserts the Coconut rice cream & Pine nut. Our booking was from 6.30pm and by the time we left at 8.30 the place was packed! It would be best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Overall, had a great first time visit and would certainty go back!

I love love love this place and it has now become one of my fav restaurants in Sydney! This restaurant had been on my radar for a while and I was really excited to try the dishes people had been raving about. The service was on point and all the pastas were exceptional and uniquely flavored. Props to the chef! While it is true that the portion sizes for the mains are quite small, I think that's how it's specifically designed. You appreciate the flavours a lot more when you eat in moderation - we're not talking about stuffing your face with a bowl of basic bolognese here. We're talking really rich, fusion-style, one of a kind, delicious pasta that should be eaten slowly and savored! Here's a breakdown of some of the dishes we ordered: Baloney sandwich - this one is pretty well known and while it was good, I actually thought it was the least impressive of the dishes we ordered! Mainly because it's something that could be recreated at home. Nice starter though. 3/5 Potato, potato, potato - We were really curious to try this one! There was a small pile of tender cooked potatoes that were sliced, with potato foam covering it and potato skin grated on top. Creative! 4/5 Octopus, cannellini, old bay - One rather long octopus tentacle that was tender, pureed cannelloni and old bay seasoning. Nicely done. 4/5 Linguine, black garlic, burnt chilli - wow. Very simple but amazing flavours! Loved the garlic with the crispy texture from the bread crumbs on top! 5/5 Maltagliati, shiitake, burnt scallion - another amazing pasta dish! Really mind blowing. 5/5 Macaroni, pigs head, egg yolk - alright, this is what they are most famous for and it certainly lives up to the hype! Each bite was an orgasmic explosion... love it!!! 5/5 Coconut rice cream, white chocolate - we had such a difficult time choosing a dessert but one of the servers said this one really stands out. This could be the best dessert I've ever had. I mean - wow. Hidden underneath the bowl of smooth silky rice cream were crumbled cookies. I was very impressed with how the different textures and even temperatures all blended together so wonderfully! 5/5 I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone considering going. A great place to take visitors as well - sure to impress!

Loved the upbeat atmosphere and the open kitchen, the service was great. Also, there is the right amount of choice on the menu - about 8 starters and as many dishes, 3 deserts only. The food was a (pricey) hit and miss. The burrata (starter) and the peanuts / chicken pasta (dish) were exceptional. The black sesame & matcha desert was dry and the sandwich (starter) had nothing special.

Although my experience at Acme was underwhelming, I can appreciate that a number of dishes do deserve a mention. The baloney sandwich was such a pleasant surprise, despite being smaller than a child's fist, not looking particularly appetizing, and being $8, this is really worth trying. It made my meal. The macaroni tasted wholesome and the pasta was very well done, the incorporation of the egg yolk and chilli was interesting. I also ordered the peppers, potato & leek, and the pea pistachio salad - these did not make an impression and although no dishes were bad, I did leave feeling like the whole place is far too hyped up. Each to their own though.

But we didn't want to tell him to stop, as he rolled of the specials with such passion and animation- we just let his rolling rrrrrrrs and sweet accents be music to our ears. Engaging service to say the least. Wines list - bellissima. Food - billissima some more. Chef could not have cooked my salmon more perfectly if he tried. That parpadelle number won't be forgotten any time soon either. Soft ribbons of pasta swathed in a rich sauce of slow cooked pork and figs. No room for dolce! If you a visceral reaction against paying that much for wheat and water (and that I can understand), then I don't suggest you come here. Now, if you're still reading, I can recommend A Tavola very highly. I am a great fan of intimate dining and the restaurant upstairs is sufficiently divided into small spaces that you can enjoy your meal without being overwhelmed by noise or by crowds. The light level is low, good for romantic dinners (although I have yet to enjoy that personally. It's been friends and colleagues thus far). The service is generally excellent. Food arrives at regular intervals; the meal is not rushed, but there are no gaping spaces between courses. Most of the proficient wait staff is Italian, from up and down the peninsula, and they seem fairly familiar with details of Italian cuisine: I've had a couple conversations with them about regional dishes and variations thereof. Their wine list, while not extensive, shows a fairly broad selection of Italian varietals--and again, the waitstaff seem quite familiar with what's on offer. The prices for the vino are perhaps a trifle high, but I understand that alcohol often subsidizes the cost of the food. As for the food itself, I must base my review on the three meals I've had here. In addition to some pretty standard but tasty antipasti, they have some regular mains (the Bucatini all' Amatriciana, Rigatoni al Ragu and a few others) that are first rate. In addition, there are always a number of specials of the day that all look devastatingly edible. I've yet to try their ratatouille (which was on offer on two occasions) nor their fish soup (what my nonna would have called a cioppino). But on my last visit, I had a black linguine with lobster. Pasta, sauce and meat were all superb. And that brings me to the pasta in general. It is actually quite difficult to get proper al dente pastas outside of Italy. Why this is the case, I am not sure. Whatever the reason, their homemade noodles are perfectly cooked. This alone to my mind makes coming to A Tavola worthwhile. I wouldn't call this restaurant an every day affair, given its price. But I've no objection to paying a fair amount for really good food. Too often in Sydney and elsewhere, you can pay a lot for mediocre fare. Fortunately, A Tavola delivers.

I was first alerted to this momentous dining experience by an American friend who sent me a video of the action. I went to try it on a Saturday night. The spot doesn't take reservations, except for parties of seven or more and on the last Sunday of every month, and it was already packed with a two-hour wait by the time I walked up. With timely obligations, I had to leave but vowed to come back again. It turns out, Buffalo Dining Club is a perfect place to visit for lunch on a Wednesday, around 12:30 p.m. There were plenty of seats, though be warned much of it is communal in this hip restaurant that seats around 50 people altogether. If you're a twosome on the patio, chances are good you'll be rubbing elbows with your neighbor, and a substantial long table takes up much of the space in the dining room. Cheese lovers will adore Buffalo Dining Club, which imports mozzarella from Italy and has an amazing burrata appetizer ($22 AUD). The giant hunk is melt-in-your-mouth goodness with every bite.
