On this episode of chicken wars, we have Acme. Shoutout to Acme for stepping up, as both Sam's Club and ShopRite were closed on Easter. I respect it though, big up to Jesus. A whole Lemon Pepper flavored chicken ran $7.99, which is just below market price for a bird. It came highly recommended, which sort of surprised me as in my head it's a lower end grocery store. Acme has soldiers though, respect. I got this bird and took it down to Sinatra Park, which is located right on the water in Hoboken. I always struggle to find a spot to eat these Tissis, as I'm really shy and insecure. The steps at Sinatra Park were pretty mellow, so I decided this was the perfect place. Plus the Empire State Building was in the background so that was tight. As I picked this bird up for the initial shot in the video, I could feel it falling apart in my hands. This is a telltale indicator of a good chicken. The breast was solid, just a tad dry from being ELITE. The leg and thigh however were 1st team all Tissi, super moist with a lemon pepper flavoring that you could taste. Skin was operating at a high level as well. How are grocery stores allowed to sell such horrendously graded produce? Grapes with thick, chewy skins, bananas that are 1 never fresh 2 turn black the moment you get home, packaged fruit is $28 dollars for three pieces of unripe pineapple, the whole place is just a massive disappointment if you're someone who cares AT ALL about the quality / over-pricing of this dump. I only really go here if I need something quick and prepackaged (canned beans, coffee creamer, etc.) For anything else I go to Shoprite or Whole Foods. The ACME in Jersey City is actually quite good, but for some reason the Hoboken ACME cannot get itself together. Recently when I was in store, I decided I wanted to make some chicken salad at home, so I bought the pre-shredded chicken in the deli department. When I got home I made the chicken salad with the shredded chicken. To my surprise, after a few bites, I bit into something hard and choked a bit and spit out a small bone. I then went thru the chicken in my salad and found several small rib bones. So be careful if you buy it. Whoever is peeling the chicken off the leftover rotisserie chickens is not being careful and this is a big choking hazard. read more

Since this place is the closest grocery store to my apartment I wanted to give them more chances. I'm getting tired of walking past this store on the way to Shoprite and then again walking past it on the way home. However, nothing has changed at all. The BS comments the manager leaves in response to reviews here are just lip service. It's been almost 1.5 years since my last review so it seems pretty clear that they have no intention of improving. The same issues are still there - expired and spoiled food on the shelves, broken refrigerators with the food still in them, clueless employees, a terrible seafood counter that can't be trusted, and the never ending obstacle course of boxes and carts they set up in every isle because they can't be bothered to put things on the shelves or handle their inventory properly. The bread isle is especially bad every time with carts and boxes always blocking the shelves and obnoxious workers refusing to do their job or even get out of the way so we can try to get past their crap and find something we want from the actual shelves. I work from home so I come here when I have time so it's on different days and different times and it's always the same garbage. read more

The motto for this place should be: "ACME: Where every day is like Hurricane Sandy". This place, literally, looks like it was ransacked by hurricane-frightened shoppers on a daily basis. They have a MAJOR issue with their stock, mainly: 1. Keeping things in stock - Their fresh meats, produce and breads are always terribly low on stock and the quality of the foods that are left in stock are poor. 2. Variety of stock - When this was A&P, I was always amazed at the variety of brands that would be kept in such a small store - not the case at ACME. Not only are their limited brands, but the price gauging on so many of them is out of control. Don't even look at the fish in their fish case, you'll be disgusted. When this store was A&P, it was never exactly a Whole Foods, but it served it purpose fairly well. Once ACME took over, it went completely downhill. And let me be clear that this isn't a staff issue - much of the staff here was working there when it was A&P and they are often very helpful and friendly. Also, their bakery is a joke. Half of the goods are pre-packaged and the supposed in-store baked breads always seem to be stale by the afternoon. How is that possible? I should also note that on multiple occasions I've brought ice cream home only to find that the top part is completely freezer burned, telling me that either the store or ACME's logistic's networks has a difficult time keeping things cold. That, in itself is scary. It's so bad that I started taking photos of the conditions in the store (see attached). Yuck. A lot of nasty reviews on here but I honestly always find this spot reliable. Never really had a bad experience. I am not doing huge shops here but they have everything you need. I also always find the deli reliable and quick. I do like the deals here and they usually have a lot on sale. The people that work here are pretty nice as well. I mean come on its a super market. They are all pretty much the same. This quarantine has really got to me so I find myself reviewing grocery stores. Solid spot though so check it out! read more

Bought cooked bbq chicken wings from their deli department today. Brought them home and bit into them only to realize that NONE of them were cooked all the way through!! We could have gotten very sick from these. I've has my doubts about acme in the past since their produce section is already usually terrible but this is just disgusting and we will not be coming back. read more

This place is absolutely horrible and should be shut down and re-opened with a new name and staff. I live just two short blocks away and tried to make this my local store. However, whatever minimal produce they might or might not have on a particular day must be used same day or it will be absolute garbage. Fish will literally be stacked on top of other fish, some organic and some not organic and all different types. Meaning your monkfish will have salmon on top of it with a piece of scallop next to it. Just some beautiful cross-contamination. The general manager can usually be found outside gathering carts or in the aisle stocking shelves. I understand one should be well-rounded in their trade however no one else seems to do anything here; not sure if it's a budgeting issue or they just simply can't find employees but it shouldn't be my problem. The only saving grace that had me come back a few more times with the pleasantries exchanged with Candita and Margarita. When the new crop of young new hires come in from Hoboken High School and surrounding areas they are absolutely useless, mute and have zero people skills. If you do decide to shop here make sure you watch every item that scans and the proper price show up, or they will take you for an expensive long ride without you knowing about it. I am done with this place. PS.. just as a side note, the second picture I have provided is a piece of information that she clearly not be left lying around. I was excited when the A&P closed and a new market was opening in the space, however ACME is almost exactly the same as the A&P. After a minimal refit the store reopened and it's still disorganized and kind of grubby with not such a good selection of products. The prices are on the higher end, they seem to run out of special offers quickly and even though it's not that busy you always have to queue to checkout. The produce section is always overwhelmingly disappointing. For instance, today I walked in to find no strawberries or blueberries in stock. When you walk in, you never really know what you're going to find. Either they don't carry it at all, it's gone rotten, or they're completely out. This in itself makes it difficult to make a single trip to the grocery store because half of the items on your list just aren't there. Additionally, it's really expensive. Whole Foods style pricing, but none of the quality. Today alone, on garbage bags, toilet paper, almond milk and a small package of watermelon I spent upwards of $35. Will I come again despite my 2 star rating? Yes. I live across the street and convenience is everything (plus the Trader Joe's that opened up is pretty lack luster). I'll probably have to build up the strength to lug groceries from shop rite to my apartment--or better yet, just uber. I will say the staff here are extremely helpful and very nice. read more

This acme is literally ALWAYS out of stock of the things you need. Went to grab avocados this morning & there were none to be found.

(1) always have long check out lines. People have ICE CREAM and when there are 5 people in front of you, and only 2 lines open, this is a "FAILURE" of customer service. (2) Foulk & Naamans Rd store has too many empty shelves on Monday & Tuesday. Constant excuses and never resolved (3) I tried out Wegmans Grocery store on 202 near David Dodge. OMG, they had everything. Plenty of check out lines, Employees very nice/polite. (4) Light Cream has been missing for months from Acme--Months. I now have to rely on Wegmans if I want light cream. ----------------------------------------- Something has seriously changed in this "COUNTRY" since Biden took office. I don't ever remember food shortages like I'm seeing the last couple of months. read more

I try not to give bad reviews but when I take the time to call them about a product I love being out of stock, only to receive runaround answers - even if they said it would take several weeks to get back to me, I would completely understand. But to brush it off, when in these times, it's the small kindnesses which can truly touch a person, and a community and make someone's year! But they can't be bothered. So...the produce section is completely sub par, seafood department - don't bother, I walked out and went right to Kings (at least the selection looked more fresh). Not only has the selection deteriorated since changing over from A&P but today I called to get information on the price for a 6ft hero. The woman on the phone told me I had to come in to fill out a paper. I told her I was not ready to order but simply inquiring the price. She continued to say I had to come in. I asked, "Wait. You are really going to make me drive in to look at a piece of paper to find the price?" When I asked for her name she quickly said that she would have to "look for the information herself and she is busy" but did not give me her name. I was appalled to say the least. I moved to Hoboken about a year ago and I've been coming to this place usually late in the evening almost right before they close just for a few items like water a couple of vegetables, yogurt, etc.... Their night time manager and his demeanor makes me feel uncomfortable... one of the times they overcharged me about $13 for something, and when I I brought it up, the girl at the register called him... he was rude and was saying that is not "rocket science" to me and to the cashier which I was confused about... and was rambling about something and didn't know how to give a refund. Legitimately the rudest employees I've ever come in contact with, bottom line. I can accept some attitude/ bad service from the younger workers there, that's fine, but when your older employees (some of which carried over from the abysmal A&P) are mirroring that behavior it's very clearly a bigger issue that likely goes up to management. There is actual disdain towards customers, from entrance to checkout. Clean house, get new management, maybe you'll recover from the already awful Yelp rating you have. read more

Gee, nothing like paying twice as much for produce as you'd pay at Shoprite (for lower quality ). And then there's the broken freezers (remnants of the A&P days--seriously, just squeeze any random ice cream container), the constantly mislabeled sale items, and the acres of trans-fat laden, shitty baked goods (in lieu of, you know, food). This place went downhill after it was A&P - the fresh produce is miserable, expensive and it's poorly stocked. I don't know who decides the inventory but it's BAD, things I took for granted are missing like decaf instant coffee and generic brands. The refrigerated section is mostly sweetened iced tea, like TONS of it, more than any other product. It's weird. And hundreds of Coke but no caffeine free diet coke. The staff are perfectly nice and will help to find something since the produce section is mostly mislabeled, nothing is located next to the price label on the shelf, it's a detective game finding a bartlett pear. Several times I was over charged on something because the prices didn't match the promoted price so check your receipts!!! Well, what else is there to say that isn't already said. A&P kinda sucked here and ACME has taken that suck to a higher level of suck. The price gouging is real, everything is grossly overpriced. I would rather at least go to Kings if I am going to spend that much. Shoprite is just better and has more options. Produce here is pitiful, but in fairness it was the same when it was A&P. If you lived across the street this may be a good option, but honestly I'd rather take my money other places that have better selection for a much better price. The only thing I like here is you don't need a card to get specials and they have ground turkey breakfast sausage. End of list. Once the Trader Joes opens I imagine this place will flounder. read more

I stopped here as an out of town shopper, and appreciated finding the perfectly ripe bananas I was looking for, as well as being treated so cordially. When I got home, I discovered my wallet was missing. I called and was quickly reunited with my wallet, which had evidently fallen on the floor. I go to ACME in Hoboken when I just need a few things, On Friday night I bought a dozen yellow roses and paid $14.99. Saturday morning they were ALL dead. I never saw anything like this in my life. So, the lesson learned is to stay away from this place. read more

The store is clean and all staff are on deck to make sure safety is the number one priority. During my quick trip tonight, I saw broccoli so limp and wilted, it should have been pulled days ago. Salad mix was still for sale after it's expiration date. The price-gouging here is brazen. $3.50 for a bunch of flaccid carrots? $3 for some slimy parsley? The only improvements over the hateful A&P this dump replaces are cleaner floors, better lighting and newer shopping baskets (although still filled with the last customer's compost). The shelves are better stocked though with a much narrower and ethnically-cleansed (like the rest of Hoboken) selection. It's good to see they kept many of the cashiers from before, who didn't deserve to lose their jobs. I live locally and pass by the Acme in Hoboken twice every weekday, so it's been a convenient place to run in for a few items. Convenience is the ONLY thing this store has going for it. It's very poorly run and has terrible customer service. For the exorbitant prices they charge, they should offer something in exchange. The selection isn't great because it's a small store, and the employees are either clueless or rude or both. Ask a question and get a blank look. No smile, no greeting. Maybe you'll get a grunt. One time it took a cashier and her supervisor 10 minutes at the checkout to calculate that a 50% off item (that cost $4.49) would mean an 83 cent discount. They were still trying to figure it out when I walked out without purchasing the item. Today, though, was the last straw. Two female employees behind the deli counter ignored me, walking back and forth, chatting. No one else was waiting, they weren't busy, I stood there and stood there, so finally I asked if one of them could wait on me. I got an EXCUSE ME? from one of them who then started snickering when I repeated my request. After she sliced the roast beef I wanted she tossed it on the counter 10 feet from where I was standing. I took it but at checkout I decided not to buy it ($7.27 for a half pound!) because in the middle of slicing it she went into the back room and came out rubbing her hands thoroughly before continuing. It was weird and I didn't trust what she might have done. This Acme store will not be getting any more of my money for a long time. read more

Worst grocery store! I thought the A&P was bad, but in few months since it has become Acme, I've purchased bad meat 3 times, a gallon of milk that went bad and stale bread products twice. Those items were all opened within a day or two of purchasing and were within sell by dates. Someone told me that they change the sell by dates to keep stuff on shelves longer and seems to be true based on my experience. Shop rite may be crowded but at least the food is fresh! read more
