Beware of "Extended consult" fees. I've been to this oral…read moresurgeon twice. I saw Dr. Deigan both times. He's a nice enough guy and seems knowledgeable, however I've never had a procedure done by him (and I certainly NEVER will for any reason after my latest interaction with them) so I can't comment on his skills as a surgeon. Frankly, the way Northeast Oral surgery (NEOMS) runs their business is shameful, unethical and deceitful. Before both of my "consults" I was told by the staff that it would be a $99 consult fee. Two years ago during my first consult/exam, I thought it odd that Dr. Deigan seemed to be dragging his feet during the consult and making a lot of unnecessary small talk. At the time I brushed it off as him being old-school and really caring for his patients, which actually made me respect him... However, that feeling was short lived and the respect soon turned to a feeling of being violated/used/deceived. Strong words, I know, but that's how I felt/feel. After the exam, the technicians ushered me out of his exam room, to the waiting room where the front desk staff informed me that I would be assessed a $220 "extended" consult fee for the appointment. I very begrudgingly paid the fee. I was totally manipulated. I never asked for extra time. I was never warned or told that if the exam went over a certain allotted time that I would be assessed a higher fee. I ended up not getting oral surgery at that time because I was advised to get braces instead to see if that would fix my problem. Fast forward two years. Braces have improved things but not quite enough. I was referred to Dr. Deigan's oral surgery practice again (he's the only one in Ellsworth). I still had not forgiven them, and I still did not trust them, but I rationalized going back to his practice again, telling myself it had been 2 years and the staff had probably changed and they'd probably improved their system, plus I have 3 kids and traveling an hour to bangor isn't convenient. Such is small town life. Several days prior to my most recent appointment, I was assured by one of their staff "Sue" over the phone that it would be a $99 consult fee. She said NOTHING about even the POSSIBILITY of a higher consult fee in the event of the consult going over an allotted time. During the appointment, about 20-30 minutes in, I kept readying myself to leave and Dr. Deigan kept making small talk and hemming and hawing about a procedure he might do (although alarmingly, he couldn't remember what the procedures' technical name was and had no experience doing it, but said he could do it anyway)... I felt more and more self conscious about time passing, and I was worried about other patients who might be waiting to be seen. It turns out no one was waiting. The waiting room was empty, so now after the fact it makes even more sense to me why he would spend so much time with me, since he had no more patients coming in, he could bill me for more than twice the cost of a usual exam if he just dragged it out. After my appointment yesterday, 10/18/18, I was escorted out to the front desk, and told by "Faith" (I believe that was her name but can't be 100% sure) that I would be assessed an extended consult fee of $220. TOTAL DEJAVU. I am 36 years old and I've NEVER in my life felt so used and manipulated by a business. Much less a health care professional. I calmly explained to Faith that Sue had quoted me $99 several days before my appointment. Faith unapologetically and almost robotically said: "Well the Dr. felt that you needed an extended consult" REALLY? well it seems like the patient should at least be warned of that. Keep in mind, he was already familiar with my case from our interaction from 2 years ago. Why would he need extended time again? not much had changed with my condition. The answer is, he didn't need more time, he wanted more money. Also, please be informed that they require payment in full at the time of service regardless of whether you have insurance or not (I do) they said that "as a courtesy" (wtf?!) they bill insurance and refund to their customers whatever portion their customers' insurance pays. This way of doing business smacks of desperation. It reminds me of the way third world countries do business. I sincerely hope that this review helps someone else avoid feeling abused and manipulated.
