I can't believe this place only has one review! This place is a goldmine for wine and spirits in the UWS. They have a huge selection of wines in a wide range of prices. I managed to score 4 bottle of wines (which all ended up being fantastic) for $22. $22!! Ok, so maybe I'm getting a little too excited about this because I usually get my stash from wine shops in my 'hood (the financial district) and I'm sure I'm getting ripped off. Nevertheless, if you're in the UWS or a short subway ride away from the 72nd stop on the 1/2/3 line then it's worth a trip. They also deliver for free in the surrounding neighborhood. Acker Merrall is my favorite wine store in the Upper West Side, if not in all of New York. It doesn't dumb down like Best Cellars, price-gouge like Beacon Wine & Spirits, or have a fussy air like Sherry-Lehmann. Simply put, they have a great selection of wine at reasonable prices with very knowledgeable salespeople. They have bottles from every wine-region, from Bordeaux and Burgundy, California and Oregon, Argentina and Chile, Australia and New Zealand, Spain and Germany, and even Greece. They have a remarkable selection of under-$10 whites, reds, and roses for everyday drinking; $10 -$30 wines in the bins for dinner parties, and considerably more expensive wine for special occasions. I have frequented the store for nearly five years, and have been always impressed with how friendly and informed the salespeople are. They can talk equally well about a under-$10 malbec as they can about a $100+ Bordeaux; they can also recommend a wine for any taste, regional, or price preference. The sales staff - in particular the one who so proudly stands in front of the framed Wall Street Journal article about himself - are so smug, rude and cocky that I hate to buy anything from this place. Yes, it has a good selection of inexpensive wines, but I'd rather give my business to a store where the staff actually says "Thank You" once in a while. read more

Good selection, knowledgable, has the cheapest wines you could want, and the most expensive. In terms of the more "affordable" wines, they can go as low price as you want, but their selection isn't the best. If you wanna spend under $20 on a bottle, then don't go here. Great selections and staff is knowledgeable as well as daily tasting which are great for someone like myself who is new to wine . I understand that space is at a premium in Manhattan, but this particular store is very tiny and the selection is small. It is chosen with care, however, and that makes a difference. I really love coming to this particular wine store, because their selection is unmatched and they have great, competitive prices. they have super high end stuff as well as some regular "table wine" for 15 bucks. the staff, as everyone has pointed out in their review are very knowledgable and nice. they also have tastings in the store sometime, which is cool if you happen to walk in on one and get a free sample of some delicious wine. and omg such good location. right off the train on 72 and broadway and ur there! cant beat it! read more

This is bar far one of the best wine shops in the city. While I do love to patron a small and charming neighborhood joint, Acker Merrall is pretty damn awesome. First off, it's the oldest shop in the country (they got through Prohibition by selling groceries!) and it's very much focused on wine education. These salesfolks here have no problem spending as long as it takes to make sure you feel comfortable - and knowledgeable - about your purchases. For me a wine shop is about two things, expertise and selection. The expertise is whether the people working there really know their wine/liquor and can provide with true insight i.e. you might want to try this wine as it's just as good and a little closer to your budget. I find the staff very insightful (especially Francois) and the selection of both budget (nice selection in budget bins) and more expensive wines provides a great overall experience. Super fast delivery of my wines I ordered by phone when I ran out of vino while hosting a dinner party. Great selection and prices, if you know what you want. The sales staff is sometimes hit or miss when it comes to wine knowledge and ability to make recommendations. Train the staff better and this place will easily earn 5 stars. read more

This is the oldest wine store in Manhattan. It has old wines, but also good choices for a picnic or kosher or sulfite-free or a Tuesday.

Decent prices and selection but the staff is rude and condescending. Avoid at all costs.

Half a year later this has become my first stop when looking for wine for a weekday night and special occasions. Why? Because the staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful; they've never steered me wrong when I've asked for a pairing for X dish we or friends are making. (Matthew has been especially helpful recently, but they all know what they're talking about.) And because they have such a thoughtfully chosen selection in all price ranges, and are usually less expensive than at the many know-nothing stores in the neighborhood. read more

Acker Merrall may well offer the best one-on-one service at a wine store in New York--call them, they'll deliver almost immediately. The problem here is erratic stock. You certainly can't count on them having what you might have bought there a week ago; and often they don't reliably have standard brands either. Oh yes, and the website has minimal functionality. I have been a customer of Acker Merralll Wines located on 160 West 72nd St. Between Columbus Ave. & Broadway. For over 15 Years. Typically I found this wine store would provide very friendly service.with a large impressive list of wines. Their staff quite knowledgeable & most willingly to help you to select the best wines for your taste buds. However, over the past two years, I noticed their newly hired staff NOT as friendly. Their Management stall don't return phone calls & when you speak to one of two threoe so-called Managers, they try to RUSH you off the phone, however, NOT before they tell you they will research your requested wine and/or liquor. By the way, they no longer carry a more extensive inventory of Liquor. For Example I asked for a Magium of JOHNNY WALKER RED since I was have friends over the 4th of July weekend now. They only carry now a Liter & didn't offer to procure the latter size for me which they would have done in the past. The hinted several months ago a fterricif talented Sommlier (please excuse the misspelling) who recommended this fantastic dry white wine from France with a price of only $12.99 per bottle. I ordered a bottle to try along with my usual SORBESKI Vodka. I tried the wine & it was a vert enjoyable White Dry Wine with NO after taste & NO high acidity. I started ordering 3-4 bottles at a time then when I was having a party at my home this past February I ordered 6 bottles. If I had more room in my Apt I would have ordered a case of this FAB wine. When 2 weeks I went to order another 6 bottles but they told me a ridiculous story that their Distributor told them that they were out of stock but their Dealer in France has scheduled to come to America on a ship & will arrive in 3-4 weeks. So I would have to wait a month for them to re-stock that wine. This did NOT make any sense. As a Senior Purchasing for 15 years for a major Cosmetic Cpmpany I know from experience that when an Inrernational Distributor has a popular wine or liquor, they are NEVER out of stock from the Manufacturer or GROWERS' of the grapes & ultimately the Wine. So when I spoke to one of Managers/Owners of the store I asked several questions he seemed NOT to want to answer, I realized he WAS NOT being up front with me. At all. He said he would do further reach &.call me back for this time I did want a case. Well after 10-12 dats without Bhearing back from at all, I called & spoke to his partner/owner & after hesitations to my questions, he finally told me the truth that the delay is due to the French Wineries being deluge by heavy rains. Why didn't tell me this rather than "stringing me along.for over 3 Weeks. These Owners/Managers are NOT acting Professional at all. And as Senior Purchasing Agent for Elizabeth Arden for 15.5 years, I know all about vendors & the feeling is Acker Merrall is no longer interested in carrying wines or certainly not Spirits or Liquor that is under price. The French Wine that their Somellier recommended is only $12.99 per bottle. The want to "Shelf" or provide wines over $15-16 dollars. After all they may have to pay a higher interest rate for a new lease & their financial strain is affecting how & well they now treat their customers! So I had my account closed with them. I don't like LIARS & Retailers no matter how good they are or think they are treat me with such disrespect especially after more than 14 years of loyalty only to them after all these years. If you decide to purchase from their inventory of varied wines go right ahead & take your chances but be aware their computers. Take awhile to calculate your order when giving an order over the Phone where you will get a pleasant experienced personnel & quick Delivery Charge is calculated & delivery persons quite wonderful, but you can't charge a TiP on your Credit Card. That is NOT allowed. yOU MUST give the driver a CASH tip ONLY! They will be so very NICE to YOU for a decent amount of time, but if you want to TRY something new, that is the beginning of a nite are!
