Due to a forced 401k distribution/rollover/tax withholding, etc, I was a little unsure about how to handle it. I had an idea through research on the internet (and multiple LLM conversations), but I wanted to talk to a CPA or Tax person to confirm. I sent out a bunch of requests on Yelp to get quotes for a conversation that I estimated would take no more than 15-30 minutes just to make sure my understanding is correct. I got a bunch of replies ranging from $100-$385. Somebody even said I needed to complete an engagement letter to have the conversation! APEX sent me a message telling me how to address my tax issue with filings and what my expected outcome should be depending on whether or not my son owes taxes. He literally said, "You should be able to use Turbo tax to handle...if you have trouble use their support or take it to H&R Block...You don't need a CPA..." No quote. Just good and clear advice on what to do. I currently do not need any other accounting/tax assistance, but if I did, I would go to Apex -- not because they are "any more right" than any other CPA firm, but because they clearly value *YOUR* time and money -- not just theirs. I like to do business with good human beings who, to some degree, treat business like it's part of a community and not just a capitalist market. Recognizing that my need "wasn't a big deal" for their level of expertise and taking a few minutes to type out a solution with no request for compensation speaks more volumes about the business than people who have paid for the service, in my mind. If they can be this complete in answers for a person who isn't paying them a dime during the time of year when they are most busy and can treat this period like a "cash cow" and bill for every minute, then how complete, thorough and diligent do you think they will be for a paying client? At some point, I want to do more real estate investing -- I read in other reviews that Apex also has experience in this space. I will call upon them for sure if I ever need assistance. We required a CPA to file 1040 + 1041 returns for the estate and we were shocked by the amount of retainer he asked for - and he said that amount was approximately half of the total charges. After leaving his office, we called our attorney. She advised that we contact other CPAs and said they should charge less than 1/2 of his retainer to do all the filings. I called 2 of her referrals and sure enough the quote was less than half of Bratton's retainer. I was given straight forward information, an estimate of costs over the phone and no drama. When we went back to pick up our documents we were charged $225 for a consult fee! Other accountants consults are free. We have used Bratton in the past, but never again.
