To adequately praise them for the work they've done, I'll have to provide a perhaps long-winded anecdote. Apologies ahead of time. TL;DR--they're awesome! *** My mother contacted Dallas to come out on Sunday, March 3rd to her rental as the tenants had reported a second floor bathroom leak of some sort that had somehow spread to the bathroom ceiling in the bathroom beneath it. From the beginning stages of the diagnosis to the eventual repairs, Dallas and his partner Heather (who took care of the contract/coordination/communication side of things) were patient, responsive, meticulous, and empathetic--pretty rare for a world in which people often do business without a deft human touch. The damages were pretty extensive, two-plus years worth of an ongoing slow leak coming from a waste line (yuck!), for the most part undetected because it was hidden beneath a few layers of flooring. The old bathroom had to go. The floors had to be removed. The subfloor had to be replaced. Re-framing and sheetrock work needed to go in before new fixtures could go in. It was a nightmare, but both Heather and Dallas were present each step along this messy journey--on the phone, through email, working well past regular business hours--anticipating questions and answering them, quickly responding to new ones raised, documenting each component of their work with photos and summaries that went above and beyond what I am used to expecting. The repairs and new bathroom installation completed in quick, efficient timing at a very reasonable and competitive cost. I know who I will be turning to should future issues arise for my mom or my own property. Thank you Heather, Dallas, and the rest of your team! You've definitely gained and retained a life-long client.

In addition, they added to a patio we had in the back yard, and a new walkway in front of the house. They showed up when they said they would, keeping my wife and me completely informed during the process. How refreshing! Highly recommended! Ken and…read morehis crew worked quickly and kept a very tidy site at the end of each day, which was important for us since we were living in the house during the project.  Early in the renovation Ken identified a structural issue and went over the possible options and costs. Ken really worked hard to find a good solution at a reasonable cost, and in fact he was able to unblock the project really quickly by proposing a hidden beam that would maintain the aesthetics of the original plan. Ken also took on several smaller projects for us which it would have been hard to get a contractor for alone, but he was able to slot them in around the main project in a way that made sense for all of us. It's a family operated business which is nice. All our communications were with Ken or Jennifer directly -- no corporate office giving you the run-around like you might find with some larger contracting organizations.

I'm not in a trade, but my dad was so I grew up around it. You wonder if they're going to do a solid job, if they are going to find 'more' issues to tack on to the bill and finally what they are going to charge and if it's competitive and reasonable. Anyone who's gotten multiple bids will quickly learn that bids from different contractors can come back wildly different and it's hard to gauge why unless you are in the business or know and trust the contractor (or whoever recommended them). Rest assured and from my experience, HBC General Contractors are top notch all around. It's my understanding they recently went through an ownership change in the Spring/summer of 2017, and see some of the reviews here are a bit older, so if anyone is concerned about that, don't be. The new crew - Ken and company are fantastic. We had an issue with dry-rot below our back sliding door. We had just purchased the house months earlier, so didn't know how long the issue had been there or how severe the rot was. We also had an ant issue, and know now that it was due to the rot issue, so it was really important to me that we got this taken care of prior to rainy season again. We had a couple contractors come out for bids. What set HBC apart for me was how on top of it they were on communicating, genuinely felt honesty about pricing and breaking down how they arrived at it (including instructing me to buy the door myself so I'd save money), and the degree of care they took in doing the job itself. I know there was no corners cut, because I worked from home the day they came over, and Ken called me over a few times to show me the progress and how/what they were doing to prevent it from happening in the future. They took out the old door, dug out and fixed all dry rotted areas (which went deeper, I saw, than expected), hung new fancier sliding door and sealed it up so good (this to me was above/beyond) I feel very confident I'll never have the same issue at that spot again. My job was relatively small compared to other very large projects that they do (they showed me pics), but I was never made to feel like I was less important or a 'side' thing for them. Reza worked very closely with insurance company, clarified several questions and ensured it was very smooth. He was also very patient to work with the bank when the funds were delayed. Reza was always supervising the job to ensure its completed top notch and we absolutely love the finishes. He always took care of smallest details so that everything is perfect. Reza guided us through the purchases that were necessary by providing several option and explaining the trade-offs. He was always ensuring we knew everything about the project and never took any shortcuts to finish the job. There was no explanation, no other recommendations for other contractors, and the work we're doing to the home isn't even anything drastic. We had a hopes set on using Tombo, but then when they cancelled after doing the estimate visit (and didn't even share their thoughts) we were forced to find another contractor. To me, reliability is key with contractors, and I can't say I found that at all with Tombo.

This guy came to my home to give me an estimate (which cost me $200) and was the most condescending person I've met in my entire life. He didn't really want my business; he didn't even tried to make a connection with me and my family because he was under the impression that he was much better than me. He kept on saying "what I'm trying to explain is..." well, I'm not stupid. I really think I was stereotyped and labeled right before the he came through my door. I should have kicked him out of my house and I really wish I did but I was trying to be civil. By the way, $2100 to install 14 square feet of backsplash is ridiculous.

They finished the work on time, being early at crucial milestones, and completed it under budget. Eric, the owner and contractor met with us several times ahead of the remodel to discuss what we wanted. He explained his philosophy and in depth knowledge of his craft. He said that he dedicates his time to one job at a time and kept our budget in mind. He communicated well with us so that we could understand and was patient and very positive. He gave us multiple options for our design with consideration given to functionality and Feng shui. His design capability was excellent and he used his real estate experience to help us in this way. However, he allowed us to make our own choices. We got a schedule of the remodel and a detailed list of the products needed and presumptive prices. We were given the option of buying our own and a credit or debit would be listed in this case. Eric would purchase the material if we didn't, keeping track of our budget. We bought about 60% of the materials. We were made aware of the tariffs put on some of the products, and the sales in the future when we could save on some of the products. We were advised to go slow on the larger purchases like the cabinets. We chose to DIY the flooring and paint. Being novices, Eric was very helpful in advising us in these areas allowing us again to stay in budget and on time. Prior to construction, Eric pointed out some red flags, such as a popcorn ceiling which did have some asbestos, and a leaky water main. He arranged for two other contractors to remove the asbestos and apply drywall. He also replaced our water main turn off valve. Overall, having a contractor who devotes his time to your remodel, punctual, keeps within budget, and tailor to how you live, no matter how large or small the remodel, is an excellent one.
