I searched and read reviews on several places around the area. I decided on Abuela's ultimately due to location. I am so glad I came here. First the customer service was great, I didn't get her name but the person that greeted me was so friendly and nice. I had one dress, two layers that I needed taken up. There are several dressing rooms to change into and when I came out, she quickly and efficiently pinned it but after she asked the length I wanted. I was not in a rush to get my dress back so it too about 10 days. I received a text when the dress was ready. The work is flawless, stitching matches dress. The first time I went to abuela's to get a couple things hemmed like a long jean skirt and they were able to do it on the same day. I didn't think much of the price since I was requesting same day service. However, I recently went in to get my husband's measurements done because he was getting a shirt custom made for a wedding and we needed it to be accurate and they charged me $45. $45 for measurements that take 10-15 minutes? I didn't question it at the time as it was my first time getting this service done and honestly, I was short on time. But after talking to family members in California who had the same service done at alterations places, I realized I was scammed. They were charged $10-$15 and here I was paying $45. I do not recommend this shop. I called them on the phone and explained that I start work in one hour and asked if they could quickly shorten my work pants. I clearly confirmed that I didn't have time and they told me it was possible. Since I live in Florida and needed it done in about 15 minutes, they told me the price would be $40. It was expensive, but I agreed because I was in a hurry. When I arrived at the shop, I saw another customer with two pants being quoted a very high price that didn't seem reasonable. He refused to pay and left, so they already lost one customer because of the price. When it was my turn, I only needed a very small part of the pants shortened. First they told me the price was $191, which made no sense. When I said that was impossible, they apologized and suddenly changed the price to $57. At that point it was clear the prices were inconsistent. In less than five minutes they lost two customers. Unfortunately this experience wasted my time and affected my work schedule. I called Abuela's Alterations this morning regarding a bridesmaid dress I needed hemmed and cups sewn in. I initially appreciated that they returned my missed call via both text and phone--that level of follow-up is rare. However, when I asked for a general price estimate over the phone, the staff member refused to provide even a rough range. I understand that pricing can vary based on dress style and body type, but a ballpark estimate would've helped me decide if it was worth the trip. I went in person a few hours later and waited behind another customer, who was clearly flustered. She had a bridesmaid dress and was quoted $175 for hemming and adding cups--more than she paid for the dress. When she voiced her concerns, the staff insisted this was "standard" pricing and emphasized her own professionalism. The tension was palpable and uncomfortable. The customer was also told she had to pay in full before any work could be done, which surprised her--and me. On top of that, a 7% surcharge was mentioned last-minute. She ended up leaving the dress but had to go home to get cash due to the high cost. Before I could be helped, I asked her quietly to confirm what I had overheard, and she did. I decided to leave. We ended up chatting outside, and I recommended another alterations business farther away that offers fair prices, allows payment after the work is completed, and treats customers with respect. She decided to follow me there. Abuela's Alterations didn't earn my business today--not because I wasn't willing to pay for quality work, but because the pricing, customer treatment, and overall atmosphere were disappointing and unprofessional. Very pleased! This was my first visit and it will not be my last. I dropped off 5 pair of pants to modify the length and needed them asap. I went there for my cousin's wedding and I'm so happy that my fiancé found this place! I was gonna be a bridesmaid and I needed to get my dress tailored. DO NOT GO HERE! I went in weeks before prom to get my dress done, we are new to the area and someone in our building mentioned they had alterations done there. It was getting straps taken in and a hem. She pinned it up and we were expecting 30-50 dollars as that tends to be the going rate.. she charged 145. We were absolutely shocked and didn't know where else we could go. upon picking up the dress almost two weeks later we found that it was done terribly. The stitching they used on the straps looked like they were ripping at the seam they made. They left strings hanging all across the seams on the bottom from hemming the tulle, there was also a hair sewed into the hem. This was the worst experience we have ever had at any tailor. When we mentioned it to the lady working there she tried to say this was the going rate eventhough we know it was not. In the end the dress is too big but after what she charged just for straps and a hem I didn't even try to get that done. It was the price of my dress to get the alterations done. read more

Very unprofessional! I came in to get my bridesmaid dress altered in a plastic bag and when I came to pick up the dress it had a stain and they did not want to take accountability and told me "put baby powder on the dress, you probably got lip gloss on it". Mind you, I don't wear lip gloss and it was a brand new dress wrapped in plastic!!! The owner and receptionist was extremely rude. I only have good things to say about this business. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The services they provide are very professional and precise. I had my pants tapered exactly how I wanted them with perfect length. I was recently in a situation where I needed an outfit altered for a cultural ceremony. It was an hour before closing and my flight out was the next morning at 7am. The staff worked together to help me. They were able to take specific measurements and alter the outfit as needed. The staff went above and beyond, even staying past closing to complete my request. I will definitely be returning. The workmanship and technique is unparalled. This was my 1st stop to get a wedding dress altered and it was not my last because this place is over priced. They tried to charge me $400 or more for very simple alterations. 1st they said they specialize in wedding dresses but to me they specialize in over charging people. The guy who was going to do the alterations was nice and friendly the lady i think she was the owner was something else. She kept over talking the guy who was doing the work. He spoke Spanish and she didn't understand nothing he was saying my friend and I understood him just fine. But when we got to finding out the price there were more stuff added to the price. Because she didn't know what he was doing. Then when I told her I didn't want to have the work done there she got upset and started telling me she was going to charge for the consultation I was fine with it then she says she had to take out all the pins. I have to admit I did appreciate the environment, it felt new and fresh, and I was greeted warmly. But that's it! The old lady talked a good game but she's not the pro she claims to be. I found her work to be sloppy and almost got away with not fulfilling a paid for request had I not spoken up. I had to find another tailor and I'm kicking myself for not reaching out to this tailor from the beginning. Try to avoid this place at all cost. I received a wedding dress that did not fit right so I called these people to see if they can fix it. At first she was super helpful made me feel comfortable with her so I trusted in her making the alterations I desperately needed. When she told me the price of 465 I should've just walked away, but I wanted to give them a chance because she gave me the confidence I needed for my wedding dress. She just purely took advantage. Any other place charged less especially David's bridal. When I told her that she started yelling and would not let talk. I told her to stop working with my dress and she told me to go in person to talk. Which I did, she started yelling and pointed out that there is a 5 days return policy which was funny because i was in my 5 days and then she changed it to saying once the dress was given. she didn't even want to give me my dress back even though the alterations was already paid for in full. I had to have the cops come in so that way she can give me my dress. Such a horrible experience. Please don't give them your money they over charge and when that is brought up to their attention they just start yelling at you saying a wedding charge is expensive to fix. Which I beg to differ because I went to another location afterwards to get it fixed and it was only $120. The owner & staff are very friendly. You can see that they do offer great quality work. However, my 1-star rating goes towards the cost of alterations. This place is a rip off, I know other local professional seamstresses whom have many years of experience that provide amazing quality work that charge 1/3 of what this place charges. I went in to get a quote for hemming on a gown and to add a belt with stones to the waistline and was offered a price of $85. When I told the owner the cost for alterations was more than what I paid for the dress, she told me that I should think of it as I got a great deal on the dress & paying the cost of alterations would have evened out if I would have paid full price for the dress. Then she offered to deduct $10. Are you kidding me?!?!?! I reached out to my seamstress to ask what the average cost would be for the work & she said it should be no more than $30.
