This little place has excellent food. Everything was fresh, and delicious. The only reason I deducted a star was because our takeout order was just wrapped in paper, and not placed in a foam or other type of takeout container. Since this was a picnic lunch, it made for a very messy time as the contents of the paper wrapper got soaked, and it started to break causing the contents of the sandwiches to fall all over. I will go back for sure, but I will make certain that if the food is not placed in a container, to ask, so we won't have such a mess. I am not certain if this is how the sandwiches are usually packaged, or if they were just having a very busy day and the foam containers were overlooked. Don't let the outward appearance fool you, this place is the real deal. Give them a try. read more

I've heard good things about this place and love Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food so I called in an order for after work. I got the Chicken Gyro and an order of hummus with pita and it was fabulous. I can tell it is homemade. The gyro filled me up, so I have put the hummus and pita in the refrigerator to eat tomorrow. I especially like the tzatziki sauce, it was very creamy. I'll start with the food. The gyro meat was delicious; the tzatziki on point. However, the pita was small and the salad bar where you add toppings was plentiful, but hard to fit and distribute evenly. I would have given the food four stars and if I lived here, I would get "to go" as much as I could. But, we were traveling. There's NO BATHROOM which I'm pretty sure is against health regulations. And no where to sit except outside at a picnic table which might have been ok if it weren't winter. I'll say this---it was the fastest lunch on a trip we've ever eaten....freezing and shoveling gyros down. read more

There were some things I really liked about Abracadabra and some that really turned me off. Like everyone else mentioned, the area is really, really small. This makes it seem very authentic but is also a bit of an inconvenience. We happened to stop by on a REALLY nice day, so we just sat outside by our car and ate. I think the space is sort of a neutral point. On a positive note, the chicken in my gyro was delicious. It was in big chunks, and very well seasoned. I also LOVE the idea of the toppings bar, as it really allows for you to personalize your meal. The garlicky eggplant is AMAZING! I thought the actual pita was pretty gross. It wasn't fluffy at all, and couldn't hold up to any of the meat juice (I didn't even get sauce), so everything immediately started to fall out of the bottom. Also, having the meat on the bottom and toppings on top means it's almost impossible to get a solid, evenly-mixed bite. I'd go back but I'm not in any hurry. I think for the price, Paul's downtown is a much better bet. read more

Just awesome. One of my friends recommended this place to me and I stopped by today to taste the Falafel. The food was amazing. Exactly what you can get in the East! This is a very simple storefront shop, there's no place to eat inside, although there are a few picnic tables outside. Ordered a gyro salad, basically a gyro without the bread. Delicious. The cook/guy behind the counter told us his parents are the owners and they were actually back home/overseas at the time so he was holding down the fort. I stopped here today to order takeout. I chose the chicken lunch special for myself, and I ordered the lamb gyro special for my husband. The special is a helping of meat (either lamb or chicken), a large serving of rice, a small side salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber and onion) and two little cups of sauce. One of the sauces was a creamy yogurt style sauce with cinnamon, and the other sauce had a vinegar and oil base. After your food is ready, you can take the open styrofoam container of food over to the toppings bar where you can add a few things to give your meal a more customized flavor. Some of the options on the topping bar are olives, banana peppers, chickpeas, a diced cucumber and onion and tomato mix, a spicy red sauce and another creamy white sauce. If you get the special, it does not come with pita bread. You can, however, add that on if you like. My husband and I were both very impressed with the food here! Although I liked the chicken, I am definitely going to get the lamb next time. I tried a bite of his, and it was perfectly seasoned! Since we plan on getting takeout the next time we order here as well, I am going to do a couple things to cut down on the cost of eating here. I really liked their food, but with the two specials that I ordered, plus the pita bread with hummus and two bottled drinks, my total came to $29.00. I can't really justify spending that much on a meal for the two of us unless it's a special occasion. What we'll do when we order our food for takeout next time is this: pack bottled water or beverages in tumblers from home and bring two pieces of pita bread that we bought at the grocery store instead of purchasing the pita and hummus to go with our meal. I added it up, and making those two changes alone would've saved us around $9-$10. Overall, this place is excellent! The staff is very friendly, and we will definitely be repeat customers! read more

There are not a lot of restaurants in this area that serve authentic ethnic meals, however this is one! The food always taste fresh and is well seasoned. Food recommendations: lamb gyro and the falafel are awesome! Location: parking can be tricky as it is not really an eat-in restaurant. Venue: This is not a sit-down restaurant. The chicken gyro was the best I've had. Their tangy yogurt poured over perfectly done moist chicken then loaded up with marinated vegetables, olives and so many other choices. I've eaten at the small restaurant twice since it opened and it was excellent both times! The menu is simple: gyro, falafel, chicken wings, salad, fries, and baklava. I've had the falafel twice and it tastes extremely fresh, well seasoned, and not at all over-fried. I've had falafel in Israel and Greece and Abrakebabra's is really authentic! One of my friends has had the gyro several times and says it's the best she's ever had. The toppings bar is a really nice feature since you can choose from many different fresh vegetables, pickled vegetables, and dressings to put on your pita. The one downside to Abrakebabra is that it is tiny. There are only 2 stools at the counter and it gets crowded if you come in to order and there are already people sitting down. It also doesn't have any designated parking spots so you have to hope that you can pull up in front of the restaurant to park. read more

After driving past this place for far too long, I decided today was finally the day to stop in and try it out. It's owned/operating by a husband and wife team (I'm presuming) and you feel instantly at home the moment you step through the door. It's a small place, with just a lunch counter for four and a two-top table on the wall, but the coziness gives it some appeal. For starters, anywhere where the size necessitates the kitchen being out in plain view usually means the place is necessarily well-kept. This is very true here. I carried out a gyro and a falafel to split with my wife. Both were freshly made and delicious. They both survived a ten minute car ride and were not soggy or otherwise diminished, so I felt I got the full experience. I'm already plotting my return. :) There is a little toppings bar off to the side and you can add olives, onions, tomatoes, sauces, garbanzo beans, etc. to the top of your sandwich... a nice touch! In my case, since I was ordering to go, he'd hand me one item in a small open sack, I'd add toppings and hand it back. It worked. It's cliche, but I found it to be the very essence of the small mom & pop stereotype that makes you prefer these kinds of places over big national soulless chain restaurants. This has become the second of two lunch places that I wish were in Roanoke rather than Salem. The other being Cafe Xpress. Why can't Roanoke have good quick lunch places? I had both the lamb and rice and falafel. The falafel was pretty good. Even though I had it to go, the patties maintained their texture and didn't become mushy. The flavor was good. The lamb was basically gyro meat shaved and then served with rice and salad. The lamb was pretty flavorful. My main complaint at most places is that I don't get enough tzatziki, but here, I got all that I wanted. The fixings bar allowed me to add extra onions, because that's how I roll. There was one guy behind the counter who I assume is the owner. The place has 4 counter seats and 1 table. I'll probably be back if I'm in the area. read more

This place is quite difficult to get to. Seating? 2-4 bar stools. Pretty cramp and cozy. I ordered the falafel sandwich, a gyro sandwich, and a baklava to-go. Put almost every topping on each of the sandwich, including the eggplant and hot sauce. The falafel were alright. I'm used to falafels that are more spiced-up. I've been coming here for about 3 years. Initially it was a secret I kept from my husband and son. Something just for me. All mine. Now I share it with them occasionally, when they are on their best behavior and my husband tries to get the owners to rat me out about how many times they've seen me since his last visit. He's jealous. The food here is important, but the service is equally fantastic. The owners are so sweet and we always chat about our kids. I've been ordering gyro for years but recently started getting falafel. The falafel is such a great texture and flavor. The toppings bar is insane. Kids love it! This is a great place to bring out of towners for a quick bite. Pro-tip: if you like hot sauce, try the homemade garlicky hot sauce on the toppings bar, it's fantastic on gyro, falafel and most importantly FRIES! read more
