Our big, loud, russian, jewish, wedding was exactly that. A romantic, grand ceremony that looked like heaven, a rooftop cocktail hour with superior shelf liquor pouring by the fire, a sexy and outrageous reception with an absurd, inhumane amount of quality food. I can go on forever, but honestly, Jennifer and Carroll are the A-team. There was not a single hiccup during this entire massive undertaking, and they were so graceful, hilarious, sharp, and made every guest feel like it was their party. We are at a loss for words. ABOVE and Beyond a Nightmare! I so wish my 'happy ever after' could have been just that but the cards were not on my side and as embarrassing as my story is, I feel it is one to be shared so that something like this will not happen to you. For a good majority of you, it won't happen but if it does, this is not the venue you want deal with.... My fiancé and I chose Above Weddings in Staten Island and decided to go the non-traditional route and have a cocktail hour reception on the Above Rooftop. We were to be married in the Above reception hall (30 minute ceremony) then the party was to be led to the Rooftop room for a cocktail hour style reception. The deposit was $1,000 and I am the one who signed the contract as my fiancé had to work that day. I made the deposit on November 11th 2016. The wedding date was to be August 12th, 2017. Well, when it came time to make the 6 month prior to the wedding 50% deposit, my fiancé called the venue on February 23rd, 2017 without my knowledge and canceled the wedding. I found out by listening to a voice mail message from Gina, the wedding coordinator with whom I was working with. She informed me that he called to cancel the wedding and that if they are unable to rebook the date, I could be responsible for 60% of the entire cost of the wedding. Naturally, I was devastated. I already had my gown, bridesmaid dresses ordered, wedding photographer booked, favors in, Save the Date cards already sent out, invitations in, centerpieces ordered... my world was crushed. I went from being a beaming bride-to-be to a single girl in one day. I had to contact every person I sent an invitation to and inform them that the wedding was off. I emailed Gina on February 27th and asked her what other party options there might be in case they were unable to rebook the space. She wrote back and gave me a price of $125 per person plus the 8.79% sales tax and must guarantee at least 100 people. That was only $25 less per person than the original wedding. I informed her that I could not afford that and I would be sending in the official letter of cancelation as instructed. On March 3rd, Gina wrote to tell me that they received the letter and released the date. She said she notified her colleagues of the situation so that they could do their best to rebook it. She wrote, "OF COURSE, I WILL KEEP YOU UP TO DATE and please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have." I never heard from her again. I well assumed they rebooked the date! August 12th came and went. I was finally starting to move on out of my depressed state. Then this happened... On November 21st, a few days before Thanksgiving, I received an overnight letter informing me that Nicotra Hotel -Hilton Grande Inn (Above) is entitled to collect 60% of the total cost in an amount of $9,540 less the $1,000 they already kept for a total of $8,540! They must receive it within 30 days right before Christmas day! At that point, I broke down sobbing. I was finally starting to heal and put the nightmare behind me so it was like someone prying a scab off a wound. I called the owner, Richard Nicotra, and left a crying voice mail to please not this to me. He never called me back. The contract is misleading and not explained. It says this... Patron shall provide evidence of the intent to cancel the agreement by registered or certified main-return receipt requested. In the event of such cancellation by the patron, or in the event the agreement is terminated by Above because of a breach by the patron, Above MAY AT IT'S OPTION, be entitled to receive, collect or hold a sum equal to 60% of the maximum contract price as for liquidated damages to Above. ... THIS AMOUNT SHALL HOLD ONLY TO AND INCLUDING THREE MONTHS PRIOR TO THE FUNCTION. (???) Any cancellation within three months prior to the function entitles Above to receive up to 100% of the maximum contract price, offset only by a replacement booking and then, only to the extent the replacement booking equals portion of said booking. All deposits paid are nonrefundable. In a nutshell, The owner knows what happened to me. The wedding coordinator knows what happened to me. I understand it is a business but really? Booking a rooftop cocktail wedding is a very rare type of wedding. It is not popular at all and I think they were lucky that I even booked one in the first place. They had close to SIX MONTHS to book another wedding. I was only booked there for 3 months before my ex canceled. They have the 'option' to collect 60% from me. This shows their character. I understand business is business but showing a little compassion towards a dumped bride who already lost someone that they loved along with a boatload of other expenses should be warranted, you would think. Save your time and money. My friend was there to DJ so we had friends show up to support but we were the crowd. The establishment makes you wait in the lobby until they are 'ready' to have you go up. Doors say 10 but more like 10:30. There's more security then patrons and at one point 13 people left because they didn't want to wait and they did nothing. When you enter the hotel [you can do valet parking or park in the lots], you are greeted in a warm lobby with a fire place, fancy suede couches to be seated for your personal bottle waitress that takes you to the top floor. there are guards that do a pat down for men and women , good safety precautions there is a dress code that they honor , men have to wear dress shoes but jeans are okay , button downs are just fine, no tie needed , basically no sneakers aloud The rooftop was stunning, the seats with a firepit seat about 6 people, but they can add on more chairs if you wish there was no entrance fee for the classics party, the only time they do entrance fee is when they have a live performance we did want to sit there originally to see the beautiful view, but half my guests weren't dressed properly so we were able to move inside for our bottle service. the policy on bottle service is 1 bottle for every 4 in your group, and it comes with 3 juices and 4 redbulls with buckets of ice, it was neatly set up and the bottles come up with light rods , made me feel special lol the bill honestly was reasonable, compared to the city where bottles cost almost a thousand, you can get rums and vodkas for 150-200 and tequila and whiskey top shelf items from 200-300 maximum the package deals seemed a bit too girly for my group, it was a bunch of sangria the waitress jacky was a sweetheart, she always checked up on us and she was nice enough to bring out the cake with a beautiful lotus candle, she cleaned our table at all times and refilled the buckets often so we wouldn't have watered down ice. the couches inside were super comfortable , they were a dark purple suede tone and the table was made of gorgeous glass there was also a beautiful hanging glass fixture and the main bar had really nice lighting effects, kinda got me in a daze for a second lol the music wasn't bad, they played a good amount of classic house / freestyle hits from the 90's to early 2000's , they also played some top 40 hits here and there so I am glad there was a mixed variety the club is spacious, the dancefloor never felt too crowded because there is so much room to dance the security guards are really nice and friendly, it shows how classy the establishment is as far as the older crowd goes, there is an event amount of guys to girls which is awesome, ranging from like 25-40's. sadly some of the guys there from SI are total jerks, these guidos think they run the place, trust me I showed the old creeps what Brooklyn is all about when this old cat tried to grope my friend, ladies beware, some of these guys are not shy at all. would I come back here? absolutely! the place is beautiful, the staff is sweet, the prices are fair, and the music is good. what holds me back from giving 5 stars is the bathrooms, half the doors did not lock or ran out of toilet paper also this place has no food unless there is a private party that you want to hire catering for, so eat before hand. read more

My husband and I got married this past April and had our wedding reception at the Above Rooftop. It was absolutely amazing. The service and the food is exceptional. My bridal attendant took care of everything I needed and beyond. She fed me, helped my husband and I relax, as well as freshened us up before the party began. She helped me to re-apply my makeup, re-steam and bustle my dress, as well as take a stain out of my husbands tie! They also had an extremely generous amount of food for us when we arrived into our private room before the cocktail hour. My husband and I were able to relax and try every plate before the guests arrived. It was amazing and helped us to enjoy our day even more. We never felt rushed! The party in the Above ballroom was absolutely fabulous! The food, drinks, and service were all amazing. The guests from my wedding still talk about the cocktail hour food and main courses! The vegetarians and guests with a special diet were able to customize their meals, and were so grateful for that courtesy. The Above staff was so attentive and helpful to my entire family. They were present the entire night and made me feel extremely comfortable. Throughout the night staff members checked in on us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and that everything was running smoothly. At the end of the night the staff sent each meal to our room as well as desserts and champagne. We were so grateful that they thought of every detail ! Above is nothing Staten Island has had, it brings the city right to us, It was too cold to enjoy the rooftop, but I can imagine that it will be great when the weather gets better. The place was designed beautifully. You have to be dressed to get in which is good, attracks a better crowd. The one downside is the security, but it does prevent fights and we all know in Staten Island there are fights. read more

I like the ambiance they create here, but at the cost of being wand scanned downstairs, and the security being a little too numerous and doing too much to get in the way, I'm not sure it's worth it. *Even ONE star would be giving this establishment too much credit* I stayed at The Hampton Inn for my family reunion across the street and was delighted to find out that there was a rooftop club/lounge conveniently located nearby. Upon arrival there seemed to be some disgruntled patrons outside of the club. Of course I chalked it up to alcohol consumption and proceeded to the HEAVILY guarded lobby entrance. So naturally I thought "Oh, wow we hit the jackpot this club is pretty popular!". I waited in line with my entire female posse, which included my mother and my aunt. I finally made it to the front desk and was asked to show ID. I currently reside in Hawaii and have a Hawaiian driver's license. To my surprise I was greeted by the most incompetent, rude and disrespectful employee on your payroll! He insisted that my ID was fake. I begin to tell him (very calmly) that I live in Hawaii, I wasn't really too upset that he thought it was fake! (Have you guys seen Super Bad?! However there was nothing McLovin about my ID). He cut me off and told me that I needed a secondary ID. Which I have because I am in the military, I offered to step out of the line and get my military ID from the hotel and the security guard (he had no name tag to identify himself) proceeded to berate me in front of my family members (my mother and aunt included) and told me that I was being recorded by all the cameras in the lobby. He began to shout at me, telling me that he's giving me a chance to "calm down". I told him that I would leave to get my ID, but my ID isn't fake. His response, "I'm now on my knees begging you to calm down". Frustrated and embarrassed my family steps in and tells him we're staying at the hotel across the street at the Hampton Inn. He calms down a bit and asked if we have proof that were staying at the Hampton (my room key). But of course he needed to add his final grand statement before allowing us to go upstairs, "If you would have stopped talking, you could've been upstairs"....... We finally made it into the club area irritated and ready to leave. It was actually a nice venue, like really nice. I don't know if being rude & obnoxious is normal practice taught among your staff. But I would hope this review would allow some insight on how patrons would prefer to be treated when on vacation to an EMPTY night club on a Saturday night. read more

I had heard mixed reviews about Above & I left with just that. The decor is beautiful and open and the outside area is just as nice. The bar is pretty long, but there is only one bar. There was a smaller mini roll-in bar and the kitchen was still open a little after midnight. The drinks are pricey, especially for the size glass they give you. There is a lot of wasted space and definitely little room to dance. There is a big conference table in the front of the room and couches in the middle. Security is constantly telling you to move around & coat check is mandatory. I have never felt so young somewhere. There were plenty of cougars and older men hanging around, as well as people coming up from the ballroom downstairs. I've been to Above three times now. It's definitely the most upscale venue Staten Island has for a night out. The decor is beautiful, the servers and bartenders are attractive and there are huge windows all over. If there's a long line you have to wait outside which sucks in the winter. It's nice to have a dress code that coincides with the fancy vibe. Drinks are pricey for a local place but they're trying to make it like the city. There's no dance floor so if you want to dance it'll be between couches, tables and chairs. Be prepared to see everyone and their parents (literally cougars and creeper dads) here. Decor? nice touches. pushes for modern finishes, boxy edged tables and bar top and microfiber furniture that is comfortable enough to get off your feet and put your clutch and heels on but not so comfortable that you'd wanna take a sober nap on. VIP tables in the middle below what i best describe as light bulb artwork that you'd see on pinterest. No dedicated dance floor, so you're sorta relegated to doing your two-step within 3 square tiles. DJ,Tech, and EFX? There is a thoughtful, concerted effort to make good use of hi-fi sound and light tech. Good high ceilings lets the music bounce and flow well without blowing out an eardrum.. and the light system doesn't aim to blind... at one point a fog machine went off from a ceiling distributor but it felt like more like a 2nd hand humidifier fizzin' out. Security? they did their job. didn't notice any more attitude you'd expect from people working security. I'll admit I feel like a 3rd of the budget goes to personnel/bouncers (or just guys in black suits and secret service wannabe ear pieces)... you had a someone respectfully frisk you right at the entrance (female for females, male for males), another one trying to manage the population flow behind the velvet rope, then the guy had to check your IDs with a card scanner, then they make you check your coat, then some dude is managing the elevator (yes you have to take an elevator to a place called ABOVE), then once you're in the club space you've got an other 4-5 MIB guys scattered thoughout trying to look intimidating, but again, they did their job. read more

Upon hearing about "the new place above the Hilton," I've wanted to check it out for a few months, although I prepared myself for what would probably be an expensive version of Z-One. We arrived around midnight and the line didn't seem to be moving at all. My hopes were lifted, however, when I saw that I everyone was dressed to impress; not an Ed Hardy shirt in sight! The wait was almost worth it, because the place is beautiful...it was also more packed than I expected. We made our way to the least convoluted area of the bar, under the giant TV. There, I saw a rare sight for NYC...a smiling bartender! After a few minutes, we had his full attention. Before taking our order, he asked us our names and repeated them back to us (another rare occurrence). He also asked if we wanted to see a menu, but being that there really was no room at the bar, we declined. My girl friends ordered their skinny drinks (ugh), but I asked Michael (the bartender) for a tasty and strong surprise. Now I forget the name, and I do apologize (caramel something..) but the caramel rimmed martini tasted like a bite out of the best creme brule ever...great choice! Before leaving the bar in search of some dance space (pretty limited), Michael repeated back our names, and reminded us of his. He also asked if we'd like the same drinks for our next round. Absentmindedly, we answered yes and turned to push through the teeming masses. (One con I will mention is a fight I saw between two "bros" getting bottle service, but the bouncers swooped in and that conveniently made an opening on the dance floor, weee!) When we finished our drinks, we saw the massive pile up at the bar and in an effort to avoid it, we flagged one of the waitresses. Unfortunately, she said we would need to order a bottle for floor service. By the time we reached the bar, and started to cue for a bartender's attention, Michael walked over and said "I have your drinks ready over here" (!?) A little ballsy, but he had in fact remembered our drinks and had just finished pouring my caramel deliciousness into a glass. Loves it. The personality of this one bartender definitely helped define the personality of Above itself. With the right recipe, almost anyone can make a killer cocktail. Unfortunately Above was a huge disappointment. The location is ideal. The venue is a bomb. My boyfriend and I went there on a sat night. About only 50 people. The dj was playing rap music not adhering to venue at all. It was very obvious people were not into music at all. Also the whole point of a rooftop is the view. Whom ever was managing had no clue. The manager had the shades down obstructing the view of the city . Also there was confusion as to is it a lounge, Kitchen or club? There's an exposed kitchen on the dance floor. Along with dining tables. But yet they had the music blasting with rap music really loud. As if it were a club. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Tried to go here last night. We were told by the manager on Friday that NO reservations were needed. We come on Saturday, turned away by MIKE at the door and told we weren't on the reserved list and there was a private party going on. So, we go into Lorenzo's bar for a drink. We hear others complaining that they were turned away because of a PRIVATE party. My wife and a few others go to the hotel manager. The manager says there is NO party and brings all of us to the door and tells MIKE to let us in. Quite honestly, I didn't want to go in after we were refused the first time. Once we get past MIKE, my wife gave him a few choice words and we were not allowed in anyway. Bottom line here, if you are OLDER, you will not be allowed in. I came here for the first time a few weeks ago with two friends. I really liked the decor and when the weather is nicer there's an outside lounge area. The music was okay from around 10pm to midnight but then after it changed to more freestyle music, which I'm not a fan of but that's a personal choice. I'm not sure how the music runs nightly. The crowd is definitely mixed from those celebrating their 21st to an older 40+ crowd. They serve light snacks. We didn't get any but it's weird to be dancing then to smell a cheese plate rolling by. There isn't much to do in Staten Island, I understand but this rooftop is nothing but a big space on top of a lonely hotel. The couple of times I went (including this Saturday) it sucked. The Dj has no idea how to keep the crowd dancing. He played bunch of mix stuff that at one point we just gave up. The drinks are Midtown prices - $15 each, which is pathetic! I was there in mid december to celebrate my girl friends birthday and I was very impressed with the decor - especially the bubbles hanging from the ceiling! - the awesome views it has to offer and the friendly staff. The bar was packed and i was afraid we'd be waiting a long time for drinks but we had a bartender named mike - great speed and tasty drink suggestions. By our third round, he knew our names and exactly what we were ordering (and we were ordering 5 or 6 drinks at a time.) I was surprised to see there was a food menu when the bartender suggested something for munching. I usually always have a good time here. It's a beautiful place in an easy location. Never have to wait online or pay for entry. Coat check is even free also. BUT, as soon as the dance floor gets wet from people spilling their drinks, the entire dance floor is a slip n slide. I watched aprox 10 people fall, my best friend and I went she fell and got tendinitis in her knee and had to go for 3 months of physical therapy. Above at the Hilton Garden Inn Staten Island is Ok I can't say it's great cause if I'm going to pay city prices to have a drink or buy a round it shouldn't cost an average $13 a glass and the prices rise from there. The ambience is good with a separate area for Dj booth so it does not get in the way or take away from space. The bubble style chandelier is an interesting addition and the huge hard liquor bottle wall is a great touch and makes it feel more up scale and classy. I would reccomend instead of the eatery bar to remove the huge spot it takes over and turn a second bar into it. Allowing for the busy nights to keep the customer and drink flow easier to manage. I would suggest this place as a possible stop to end a night but not in my top 10 at all. read more

This is a beautiful place and unlike any bar I have seen in Staten Island. Everything from the elevator is nice at this place and the lighting adds to it. I like the whole concept of it being a rooftop bar but it doesn't have much of a view and the balcony area is a little small. The drinks here are a little pricey and there is not much to do. Like every Staten Island venue people don't really dance they just stand there. This place is good for older crowds as well. You also have your lovely alpha male crowd too who are not afraid to try to grab girls to dance with. read more

IT says that they're open from 9 pm online, we were there at 9.20pm, and the security guy told us that they are open from 10 just today and that we should go and get drinks at the restaurant nearby. I booked this place for a wedding, but prior to the wedding we decided to go there on New Year's Eve to experience the food, music, and atmosphere. I dealt with the sales rep Gina who received a $1000 nonrefundable deposit from us. The experience was terrible. We arrived 10 minutes early and they didn't let anyone in until 930pm. Then it was a fiasco before we were able to get up to the rooftop. We got to the rooftop and had a drink. We sampled the food and found it to be very disappointing. The dance floor became extremely slippery due to people spilling their drinks. The bathrooms were dirty. In the short amount of time that I was there, I witnessed two people fall. One was a server. We notified Gina of our concerns. She assured us that the food would be different for the wedding. We really wanted to sample the food prior to putting down the 50% deposit. Gina was unable to let us sample the food prior to the nonrefundable 50% deposit. This is part of the email that Gina wrote me. "Yes, the initial $1,000 deposit is non-refundable. Also, per the contract, if your fiancé were to cancel the wedding at this point, Nicole could be liable for up to 60% of the contract if my office is unable to rebook the venue for another rooftop wedding on 8/12/17." I understand perfectly well what you went through A.J. the same thing happened to us but initially before even seeing what my boyfriend had on the gentlemen at the door asked if we were on the list. We said no and he said it's a private event-"Friends and Family". I replied informing him there was no information on the website stating a private event however it did mention the DJ Trentino from Chicago was going to be there. there was nothing about a "FRIENDS & FAMILY " Private event when I called and checked the website . At that point the manager came out and asked my boyfriend if he can see what kind of shirt he had on. The manager informed him he needed to have a collar button down shirt. Thank God my boyfriend had it in the car and at that point all of a sudden it's no longer "FRIENDS & FAMILY " "PRIVATE" event. FUNNY!!! They have about 10-20 bouncers and they hover especially people who had bottle service. Very uncomfortable. The other thing I did notice; one of the employees who caters to the bottle service went to the ladies room and used it and left with out washing her hands. WHO DOES THAT!!! (NOTE) they serve food as well. Maybe the manager needs to be strict with employees informing them the importance of washing their hands and a little less strict with customers at the door who bring you business. KEEP IN MIND GENTS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A BUTTON DOWN DRESS SHIRT GET READY TO BE TURNED AROUND. IF YOU DON'T HAVE BOTTLE SERVICE: MAKE SURE YOU DON'T TRY TO TALK TO A TABLE WITH BOTTLE SERVICE YOU MIGHT GET TACKLED :) Overall they need to relax a little too much hovering even with their employees which was very noticeable. I am a wellknown and respected marketing professional who has attended numerous events both professionally and personally at the Hilton Garden over the past several years. On Thanksgiving Eve 2012 I attended the opening of "Above" with a few close friends and business associates. I was standing on an outside balcony with a former business associate and there were two men on the balcony smoking cigarettes. Suddenly... I was accosted by three bouncers weilding flashlights escorting me out as if i were a violent criminal!!!! They insisted that they had warned me about smoking three times earlier!!! Obviously they had mistaken me for someone else because I had absolutely no contact with them prior to that point and I certainly wasnt smoking PERIOD!! I was profoundly embarassed infront of litterally hundreds of people for no reason at all!! I will be consulting my attorney to see if i have any legal recourse!
