If you are a professional string player with thousands to spare this is the place for you…read more I went here to buy to look for an intermediate violin for my 17 daughter who has been playing for less than a year. Because of this we weren't looking to spend a super ton of money on a violin, just one better than her student one. The older gentleman, who was the main luthier, was really annoyed that we didn't make an appointment (we didn't know we needed one), didn't know the make of her violin, and said he had an 11am appt coming that we'd have to basically leave before. My daughter is new to violin but not string instruments so when she asked to see violins in our medium price range with a warm tone and a high resonance he said that would be impossible cause we weren't willing to spend a lot. This is obviously not true cause we have gone to other shops and found ones in our price range matching that description. We ended up buying a fiberglass bow that was pretty expensive but i still would never give them my business again. This store is very prissy and not nice to newcomers or people who aren't wanting to spend ton on a violin. Would not recommend

As a violin teacher and being a retiree of 34 years of public school orchestra teaching in the…read moresuburbs, I can say that the reputation of this store has always been excellent, over decades. They know stringed instruments, and they know how to repair string instruments. I was there lately to help a student choose a new violin, and I was impressed with their knowledge of violins, bows, and cases for the violin. In re to repairs: they actually turned down a repair of an older violin that had been repaired a few times, because it looked too delicate, may cost more than the value of the violin, and referred my student to a second shop for another repair estimate. That's an unheard of level of honesty in this business. I would recommend this shop and I'm super picky. I generally drive into Park Ridge where many of the CSO musicians go for their repairs to MBecker, but I'd comfortable having something repaired here or buying a new item.

I grabbed my cornet WITHOUT valve oil in my case. I HAVE to apply valve oil before I play, it's a thing. I only find out I have no valve oil when I arrive, but thanks to YELP I find a music store that's only 12 minutes away. Thank you YELP. As I'm hopping out of the car and walking to the front entrance, I open up YELP to check in and notice it doesn't open for 10 minutes. A second horrified surprise, but as I'm standing in front of the locked door the owner walked up on the other side and opened up early for me. Quickly, well sort of quickly, sold me a bottle of Al Cass valve oil (it's one of the better brands) for a reasonable price and I was able to properly honor a special vet at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

He has fixed my Fender Strat when I thought it was beyond repair, he tuned up my PRS, and he completely hooked up my Ollandac. I had the Ollandoc custom made and when it arrived it needed lots of work. He adjusted the nut, straighten the neck, installed new Duncan 59 pickups on both the neck and bridge. The pick ups were a bit tricky because they are the 4 conductor model that needed to be wired up for straight humbucker, split coil, and parallel switching. UJM is the only place I trust to touch my babies and she sounds amazing now! The work is done fast, correct, cost effective, and you can tell they take pride in their work. Love the fact that they don't try to up sell you and they give great advise. Give the small guys a chance and stay away from big shop retailers that only care about $$$$. The staff if friendly and fun to talk too, UJM has a customer for life and I recommend them to anyone I talk too! Well done UJM!

I was called the following day and Notified that the guitar restringing was Completed but that the neck needed adjustment & the repair person for that isn't there but would "probably" be in on Monday and someone would call me back. From Monday to Thursday I called daily to get an update on when the guitar would be ready and each time I got a different person and had to explain the situation to each of them and each time I was told I'd get a call back with a date it would be complete. On Thursday afternoon, I went into the store and asked for my sons guitar back as it still had not been repaired. I then drove directly to Axes Music in Mokena where the owner, Bill greeted me as I walked through the door. He inspected the guitar, took it in back and within 10 mins, completed the adjustment. He also commented on the "odd" restring job that was done at House of Music. I gave two stars instead of one because everyone I talked to at House Of Music was considerate, it was the last persons suggestion that I just come and get the guitar as he admittedly had no idea when it would get repaired after texting with a "manager" about it.
