I live in one of the best school districts in NJ but we switched to Holy Spirit School three years…read moreago and I am so happy we did. Wanting "more" for my children, we looked at various private schools in the region that had high levels of academic focus, strong community and that "something extra". After visiting several school we chose Holy Spirit for many reasons but it was the only school that really stood out as having that "something extra". First, their true commitment to growing the children academically in the most personalized manner was incredible. Allowing them to move forward and learn at their own pace and encouraging them to grow not "waiting for the others to catch up" as we saw in public school. But also, when they need help or a little extra, the teachers and staff have gone out of their way to work personally with the children to help them understand and excite them about the learning. The teachers are always available and happy to offer extra tutoring which is wonderful. The kids are nurtured in a "family" environment to care for, respect and help each other. Beyond the academics there is a community of involvement among the parents. The school events and fundraisers are great fun for the extended community, not just the school community. Annually the entire school rallies around the "school play" which is the largest and most incredibly well produced and directed school play I have ever seen. The kids are from 3rd- 8th grade and they blow the socks off many of the high school productions we've seen. For those 4 months of practice and rehearsals, those kids are a part of something wonderful that they will remember and gain skills they will use for the rest of their lives. My children love Holy Spirit and so do we!

Wow- a chance to blast my old high school. Should I mention my guidance counselor, that was…read moreretiring my junior year and let me fail a semester of Physics before allowing me to transfer out? Or the football team that screwed me out of being team captain, and had a pedophile as a coach (arrested years later- no comment from the school)? The burned out loser ex-NFL weight room "coach," basically waiting to die? The constant stream of increasingly authoritarian principals, which culminated in placing video cameras outside the doors and hiding in bushes trying to bust kids leaving early? The other guidance counselor that was more interested in hearing gossip about which one of my friends was on heroin then helping a 17 year old kid come to terms with a friend dealing with serious drug abuse? Nah, let's take the high road. I loved high school, I studied and got good grades while partying hard. I was 100% prepared for college, and way ahead of the curve in terms of writing skills. When I went here, it was so competitive to be in the top 10% of the class, some kids went to private school because they couldn't handle the competition. Pretty much the opposite of the way public/private schools usually work. The top kids I went to school with went to Harvard, Dartmouth, Wharton... you get the idea. All the Ivy League schools are familiar with this high school. Sports programs have a lot of new equipment to keep everyone safe. They win a lot of state championships, but never play in the most competitive divisions. If you are trying to be recruited by a major college, this was not the place to do it when I went here. Since I've left, they have done major renovations and made the school a lot bigger, although it seems like at the expense of student parking. The football field is nice, nice track around it and good stands. The tennis courts needed help when I was there, I can't imagine they didn't get fixed. I guess the fact the school has tennis courts at all lets you know the level we are dealing with here. The swim team and hockey team were off campus- no ice rink or swimming pools here when I was a student. The campus has the junior high and high school all in 1 location, but separated in 2 buildings. 7-9 are at the top of the hill, 10-12 at the bottom. So freshman don't really get hazed, since they are the oldest kids in their building. Personally, I liked it. Other people I tell about the structure think it's strange. All-in-all, this is a great school with a solid reputation. You are always going to have teachers that have checked out and don't care, but I really think most of the teachers I had here gave a crap and tried very hard. I am still in contact with my Latin teacher, who congratulated me after I graduated law school and posted some old photos of me with a mohawk. Good times.
